he fell into freezing water. even if he could swim he can't come back because there is that big wall/ he probebly died, but they did not want to show that to kids
1.) We're given no indication that Hahn has any bending abilities, and he uses conventional Water Tribe weaponry. That limits what he can do in this situation considerably.
2.) Hahn falls from a pretty significant height when he takes a dive off Admiral Zhao's ship. It's possible the fall knocks him out when he hits the water's surface.
3.) He's wearing heavy Fire Nation plate armor, since at the time, he's on a mission to infiltrate the Fire Nation vessel. Plate armor is heavy enough to make Hahn sink for sure, if he can't remove it in time. That stuff isn't a snap to put on and take off either - it usually takes another person to help you put it on or remove it, and it takes time. Probably more time than Hahn has to hold his breath - and he won't be able to hold his breath for long if he's knocked unconscious by the fall. Plate armor also isn't something he's accustomed to wearing, so that would decrease his effective speed of removing the armor significantly.
4.) Arctic water is damn cold. Going by real world numbers for a moment, it can get as low as 28.8° F before freezing occurs, since it's saltwater. Aang makes a stop to meet Roku on the Winter Solstice before heading to the Northern Water Tribe, which for us is around December 20th. Since it's winter, the water is probably as cold as it's going to get. This would further slow Hahn's removal of the plate armor and swimming to the surface or safety. Even if he did find an ice floe or a row boat or something, he'd have hypothermia, which Zuko only manages not to die from because he has his fire bending to warm him back up.
5.) The Northern Water Tribe is surrounded by a sheer wall of ice, so even if Hahn could swim the distance between the vessel and the city, he'd have no way of getting inside. Zuko only gains access to the city because he successfully identifies an underwater tunnel that the turtle seals are using, follows them in, and uses his fire bending to melt a hole in the ice. We've established that Hahn is not a bender, and I think we can all agree he's not very smart, so he wouldn't have made it half as far as Zuko does in pursuit of Aang.
If the idea of 17-year-old Hahn dying is distasteful to you, then you're welcome to believe a water bender took notice of Hahn's plight and rescued him - or that he was captured by the Fire Nation, if that's somehow more palatable? Which means he probably gets hauled off when Aang drives the Fire Nation fleet away, and that's... not much of an improvement over dying.
In any case, we're given no indication that Hahn is able to save himself under his own power. The most likely conclusion to draw from this is that he died off-screen, though it's possible even the writers didn't give his fate much consideration when dropping him off the side of a ship, since he's kind of a joke character in the first place.
wow. just wow.
Before someone brings up how could Zuko swim in the same freezing water and survive, there's two options:
Yeah, he had the breath of fire, which Iroh noted himself "could save [his] life." He almost died by the time he made it to land, but he was was quick enough to outlast the cold (he himself not wearing armour) and was then able to use his firebreath to raise his body temperature .
If he didn’t die by whatever Miracle he would still be trapped outside of the walls of the city just prior to the invasion and all hell breaking loose so he was likely a casualty of war far too many miracles and series of coincidences required for him to have reliably survived
When the human body makes a sudden impact with freezing water, it immediately goes into shock and then it only takes 15 to 30 minutes for you to die of hypothermia, suffocation, and/or cardiac arrest. And considering that Hahn was amongst a fleet of Fire Navy where he was unlikely to be rescued within that time, his fate was sealed the moment he hit the water.
This is an informative addition, thank you!
I think a better question is: Do we want him to survive?
Hi! Watching Siege of the North right now. The chief gave a speech about the upcoming battle where he mentioned that some of the faces there that night could be the last time they saw them. It then flashed to Yue, Pakku and Hahn. Yue died, and Pakku left the tribe to go to the south. I think Hahn getting tossed off the ship def insinuated he died, because it had been foreshadowed earlier in that speech.
Oooooo. Nice Forshadowing.
Good eye Cokedupatikinkos.
