Whale Tail Island is a large island situated off of the southwestern coast of the Earth Kingdom and among the Southern Air Nomad archipelago. The island gets its name from its distinctive shape, which on maps bares an uncanny resemblance to a whale's tail. While little is known about the island or its inhabitants, Water Tribe sailing lore makes the claim that whales can never be found anywhere near the island because it is actually the tail of the largest whale in the world. The white coloring of Whale Tail Island on the world map suggests it is or once was Air Nomad territory.

[edit] History

When Long Feng and the Dai Li attempted to get the Avatar and his friends out of Ba Sing Se when they posed a direct threat to the power Long Feng had over the city and the Earth King, they did so by luring them to a stable where Appa had supposedly been kept and had a brainwashed Jet and one of their agents, disguised as a janitor called "Old Sweepy," remark in an offhand way that the Bison had been taken to Whale Tail Island, which was conviently on the other side of the world. They discovered the true nature of this plot, however, through contact with Smellerbee and Longshot, the two groups deduced that Appa was actually imprisoned underneath Lake Laogai.

In "The Southern Raiders", it was revealed that this island where the Southern Raiders have been stationed for some time allowing them to easily access the South Pole for the annual purging of the Tribe's Waterbenders. Zuko and Katara, disguised in black ninja-like outfits, raided the base. It was here where Katara and Zuko discover that the commander of the Southern Raiders who raided the Southern Water Tribe, Yon Rha, retired 4 years earlier.
