[edit] Continued from IRC
I never called you God, all I did was ask why it was so hard to make an addition for fan art in the licensing template, and then I continued saying that it isn't hard and I know this because I see the code for the template and can easily and quickly make it. Wikias are meant to have edits, and every edit does not require a consensus of people who will not listen to reason making it unfair for the person making the edit. felinoel ~ (Talk) 16:55, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ask Thailog explained, feel free to add that code that you find so easy to do. If you find this urge as to explain and nitpick at every little thing on this wiki, as I said, go create a forum to rant. Joey aa 16:58, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
But you told me I needed a consensus before I could edit it. felinoel ~ (Talk) 17:17, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- I told you that you needed consensus before changing how things work around here (like what we consider what). You've already been given the okay to go ahead, I don't know what you're waiting for ;). Joey aa 17:20, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
The only thing I wanted changed was calling fan art screenshots when they were obviously not screenshots. felinoel ~ (Talk) 17:24, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I have to wonder though, why was what I had not good enough? felinoel ~ (Talk) 17:30, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- How could you call an hour rant that
- I don't understand your question, could you rephrase? Joey aa 17:41, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
What? I am talking about what started this, I noticed my fan art was being labeled as a screenshot so I changed it to something that wasn't calling it a screenshot? felinoel ~ (Talk) 19:29, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Gah, I'm too tired being up for the past 19 hours without sleep to go look back at logs. If you feel need, User:Thailog is there. Joey aa 19:34, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Thailog is the one who didn't like it, I figured you already saw it, if you didn't you could have just asked, here it is felinoel ~ (Talk) 19:52, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- He was the one you edit warred with, I'm looking at the history right now. Contact him. Joey aa 19:56, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Joey, be sure to tell 888 on IRC. Sorry, I can't be there today. --Energybender 19:54, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Sure. Joey aa 19:56, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
But 888 agreed with Thai that my fan art should be called a screenshot felinoel ~ (Talk) 20:00, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thailog reverted it, so if you want to discuss this, talk to him first. Joey aa 20:01, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I tried that already, he just berated me and wouldn't listen that it wasn't a screenshot. felinoel ~ (Talk) 20:07, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Please, provide evidence to support your allegations of my berating and "not listening that it wasn't a screenshot". Thanks. ― Thailog 21:38, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
that image is in no way a screenshot
^1
It is labeled as a screenshot, when it is not a screenshot
^2
someone calling it a screenshot when it is most undoubtedly not
^3
In no way is that image a screenshot
^4
The berating is in those as well felinoel ~ (Talk) 21:50, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Nowhere do I say that the image is a screenshot. In fact, I agreed it was not when I said 'that's why in the description field I wrote "(digitally produced from a screenshot of the show)".' I simply refused to add an appropriate image license tag to the imagebox because instead of asking, you went out of your way to make silly allegations (like owning rights over the image) and rant about how it wasn't a screenshot. That's not the most productive way to request improvements. As for the "berating," it was very much attuned with your over the top and "playing the victim" attitude. ― Thailog 22:02, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I have no need to play the victim, as you can clearly see in the license you keep tossing on those pictures it states in the first line, "This image is a screenshot" which is quite the opposite of what you claim. Besides, according to joey I am perfectly within my rights to change it to what I changed it to, I tried to double check and show him what it said but he left. felinoel ~ (Talk) 22:05, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- I am aware that the image license tag says that it is a screenshot, but like I explained to you just today, that's because no one updated the imagebox template with a suitable template for digital images. And Joey said you could do it, and by it he meant update the template; not dumping it directly on the images. ― Thailog 22:08, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- The way he worded it made it sound like he what I had was fine, and as you kept claiming you apparently weren't aware of it calling it a screenshot, so you admit to being a liar? felinoel ~ (Talk) 22:10, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
Because you said you didn't call it a screenshot, and then you said you knew you called it a screenshot? felinoel ~ (Talk) 22:33, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- I've answered this. Please, read my post more carefully. If you can't understand what I'm saying, then refrain from pursuing this conversation. There's no simpler way in which I can say what I've explained repeatedly. Also, please do try to use clear phrasing and language; it's essential in a medium where the only form of communication is writing. ― Thailog 23:30, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Templates
Same question as on wjxh's talk page: Is it supposed to be that there is a Category:Fanon Templates and Category:Templates (fanon)? Kai - Talk 15:00, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- Already fixed, thanks. We're still going through a lot of these and need to find these. Keep up the good work :) Joey aa 15:01, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- Joey, this probably has to do with the merger, the battle template we use appears to have been overwritten by the fanon one, I tried to see an older version of it, but it appears that those have been overwritter as well. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 20:38, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- Fixed, and yes, it was because of the merge. If they have s trmplstr named the same, that template would overwrite ours, and we just need to revert or rename it. Joey aa 03:06, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- The War template has also been changed to black. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 20:03, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Featured user: This feature will return next week, due to the editor being extremely busy and unavailable for this task. BSST apologises for any disappointment in advance. The Merge: It Has Arrived Avatar Fanon has joined Avatar Wiki as of 27 June to start as a merged wiki. From today, users will be permitted to write fanon/fan fiction on Avatar Wiki, providing they write in the namespace "Fanon:". This simply means that people who want to write fan fiction/fanon in Avatar Wiki should type If you need any help at all regarding fan fiction and fanon, the four fanon admins, SuperFlash101, Waterkai, Vaznock and Zukofan123 will be able to help. Some of the full admins, such as Joeyaa and myself can also answer general enquiries. If you're wondering, the combination of the merger and the summer holidays is the reason for the compact nature of this edition of BSST. You can start writing fanon by simply typing the name of the story or character in this box! Avatar News Story Entertainment Tonight officially released the teaser trailer of The Last Airbender this week on June 22. In it, we get a brief clip of a hooded Aang displaying some Airbending moves in a room filled with candles as a Don LaFontaine-like voice narrates, explaining the plot. Following this are a few previously released image of Aang and Zuko, along with the official poster for the film. Not much can be told from this brief trailer, but we here at the Ba Sing Se Times can at least say, "the effects were decent."
Improvement Article by Vaznock This week's article in need of help is Avatar: The Path of Zuko. If you make good and constructive contributions to the article, you will be given a thank you by the editor himself, and will be awarded with a fancy certificate after the article is featured! [edit] Bot Request
Hey Joey! I'm back from my inactivity. I've noticed that the merge has happened, and I just have some concern. It seems that, now that the title "Fanon:" has been placed in front of all the pages in fanon, which has broken many of the links on the pages, and I was guessing this happened in the merging process. Well, I was wondering if you could somehow (if it's possible) get your bot to change it back to the original links, and then redirect the pages, such as "Tam Mee" to "Fanon:Tam Mee". I'm inexperienced in this type of things, so if it's not possible or too tedious, or if I'm just way too out of it, I understand. Vaznock - Talk 21:49, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Wait a minute, is this one of the issues that the notice on the top says is in the process of being resolved (sorry, I've just missed so much)? Vaznock - Talk 21:51, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, there shouldn't be many if at all any broken links, can you point me to some? (Most likely it's just due to the cache and purging the page will make the redness of the link disappear) Joey aa 13:25, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
At Kyoshi Revolts Chapters, almost every link is messed up, as well as some screwed up quotes on some character pages, such as Azula (Kyoshi Revolts). Vaznock - Talk 13:29, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yup, that's just cache. Because a link will turn either blue or red once it is created (the page is saved), if the linked pages were imported after the linking page then you get a redlink. Don't worry about those, all you have to do is purge the page, and I'll do some mass purging as soon as I get the images. Thanks! Joey aa 13:34, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay. BTW You didn't have to repair it by hand. I could of done that. Now you must think I'm a lazy nub....anyways I was also wondering if the fanonadmins had the power to remove the title "Fanon:" at the beginning of their articles, since it makes the titles quite ugly and added another small problem with the links. Vaznock - Talk 13:37, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- We'll need to bring that up in our policy decision. However, I do know how easy it would be for us to simply use a JS template to remove the namespace from showing while on the page. Joey aa 13:56, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- Joey, the highest priority at the moment is for someone to do that fanon image dump. Until then, users are wasting time uploading new versions. Can you please push harder for this to be done, or do it yourself? Thanks. Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 14:51, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- Grr, I need someone with server access, and it would help if I had Skype on my laptop. I'll try to find someone... Joey aa 14:54, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
So.....the bot request isn't going to happen (the Avatar Fanon pages base names, such as "Mina", won't be redirected to "Fanon:Mina")? Vaznock - Talk 18:33, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
- I think that can happen on a per-story basis, and providing there is no conflict with real canon article titles. Joey, could you do that for Vaznock's stories? Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 10:13, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll use the JS hack just because it's easier to do widespread... Joey aa 14:21, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, so your bot can or can't turn all the links with Fanon: in them to just the base page name?, as I really don't want to have to review ever KR article and remove the Fanon: part by doing this constantly by hand: [[Fanon:Blah|Blah]]. Vaznock - Talk 15:54, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
- It should have done the majority of links when I did the massive XML change, of course the problem always is the fact images and categories use [[]] too and a bot change could mess them up. Link me to a specific page or a list of pages and I'll bot them if you want... Joey aa 16:58, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Image Categorization
Can I categorize all the images? Zukofan - Talk 21:04, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- Please do. Your help is greatly appreciated :D Joey aa 21:22, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Imported images
Will the images you've imported show up here? ― Thailog 21:16, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think so, it's kind of technical. I imported and purged their pages, but the actual uploads were done by a Wikia tech whom had server side access resulting in them to be directly uploaded to the server. You can get a list at Special:Contributions/Maintenance_script. Joey aa 21:21, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Main Page Help
Hey Joeyaa, sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but you can offer some more advice for updating the main page at Foamipedia? I pretty new to Wiki so I know next to nothing to coding a proper main page. Andftw18 01:10, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- It's actually quite easy (once you do it a couple of times). See help:main page. The usual pattern of a main page is to use two columns (see the main page columns) which divide the page in two (one side being bigger ^left^), and with conventional use of bordered boxes full of the usual featured pages, media, poll, quote, site news, links to pages, and pictures to aid navigation. Try taking each component (listed above) and making them individually, and then putting them altogether. It may be the long way, but it sure will teach you how to do it in the future :) Good luck, and I'm open to questions. Joey aa 01:18, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick reply. It is probably going to take some time before I can get a main page up that doesn't look generic though LOL. I'm going to keep checking out other Wikis to see what type of page I want. Andftw18 01:50, 5 July 2009 (UTC) (I keep getting logged out)

- If you want a bot, you'll need to make or get one.
- All 3000 user talk pages on this wiki would be considered spamming.
- You don't have a bot flag, and won't gain one if you don't have a good reason.

[edit] Bot Request 2
Hey Joey. I've fixed the links for me and Kai's pages, and I just have one tiny question. Is it possible that your bot can hide the title "Fanon:", maybe by manually applying the title template to pages. if not I completely understand. Vaznock - Talk 16:49, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

- What's this? The meeting already took place? The scheduled time hasn't occured yet, though. --Energybender 17:49, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- No it hasn't. I think he messed up the time zone conversion. Joey aa 20:06, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] User Group IRC Channels
Maybe it would be in the best interest of some of our user groups to have their own channel on Freenode. Perhaps a double-hash (##) beginning or a triple-hash that reads ###wikia-Avatar-SouthernDramaTribe (which is a little long, though). I think this choice would be especially helpful for the group I used in the example in order to halt further spamming of group members' user talk pages. Let me know what you think at the meeting tonight. --Energybender 17:45, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- Triple hashes don't do anything on this network, and I don't see a good reason for them not to just use the regular #Wikia-avatar. Joey aa 20:04, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Featured user: It is not often noticed, but TLane laid the foundation for a myriad of articles that we see today - text, translations (which he took huge efforts to do considering that he is not Chinese), images, and even a template or two. His work throughout the last one and a half years has been in the background, but the combined weight of the changes he has made has seen this wiki become an extremely reliable, authoritative and well-presented Avatar resource.

Hey, Joey I have a question. I have recently become an admin at suite life wiki. I was thinking of having a newsletter there, like the Ba Sing Se times, it is still an idea in progress, but if we the community do decide to go through with it, could you make us a bot for delivery and other things like that. Joey, could you please send the BSST's seventh issue as soon as possible? This is a high priority and must be done within the next twelve hours or so. Also, you requested inclusion of contest winners on the main page. This is easy, but I think you should post on Template talk:Avatar Wiki first. Once everything's cleared up, we can post the first round winners on the main page. Thanks. Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 11:18, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Featured user: Zero2001, better known as Zero, was a controversial user and admin on Avatar Wiki. His direct and abrasive method of speaking drew criticism from many circles, although some users and Zero maintained that he had no dubious intentions at heart. However, most users gave him high praise for his excellent technical work around the wiki. This included the navigation templates now found on every page, as well as dozens of other templates. Zero was also extremely knowledgeable about Avatar, stating on his user page that he had committed all sixty episodes of the TV show to his memory. Zero was an admin from July 2008 to June 2009. News Story by Vaznock (with changes by The 888th Avatar) A few weeks ago, wikia gave us something new - the Rich Text Editor. The upgrade was basically supposed to make it easier for new users to make certain edits, as they will be able to visibly see the edits they make, almost as if they're in "Preview" mode. However, their is also another group of users whom the Rich Text Editor affects - the experienced users. Here is what some of more experienced users of Avatar Wiki have to say in a response to the question: What do you think of the Rich Text Editor? Have you already disabled it in your preferences? "I personally find the Rich Text Editor rather annoying. I have disabled it in my preferences, because I find it very troublesome to work with it. I prefer the old one." -Waterkai, Fanon Administrator "To paraphrase Mai, there is no fathom in the hatred I feel for the Rich Text Editor." -Thailog, Rollback User "No, in fact I have not disabled it. Yet, I am quite fluent in the original editor. I use both, but the new editor often has issues. It is very hard to place and move pictures, so I use the original editor for that. The Rich text editor for the most part is very easy to use, but it has lots of bugs. But, if I must choose between them, I would choose the original, it has no bugs." -The avatar, Rollback User "This is another one of those things that may cause a bit of mayhem in the short term, but is bound to improve the wiki in the long term with the better accessibility to new users. Improvements are ongoing and I am sure that it will turn out to be a widely lauded feature on Wikia." -The 888th Avatar, Bureaucrat and Administrator As it can be seen, experienced users mainly think of the Rich Text Editor as a nuisance, though not all users have disabled it. The only voice of dissent seems to be from the chief editor of the BSST himself, other than Joeyaa, who was also supportive on the community portal talk page). However, if you struggle with wiki coding, it is highly advisable you continue editing the Rich Text Editor until you feel comfortable without it.
We had to see this coming, no? The Last Airbender has officially announced their product placement! That's right, readers - action figures, shirts, toy playsets, and more yet to be announced. Spin Master, one of the toy adapters, has stated that they are excited to get them on shelves. Well, let's hope that it sells better than the original line of toys for the show, as we all know that's why we don't have a spin-off. And in related news, BSST won't be the only place for you to find out about news about the movie; an official Avatar Wiki user group has formed under the title Wan Shi Tong's Library and will be starting blogs in order to give you the latest news ASAP. Now, this doesn't mean that this column is useless now. In fact, this way, the BSST can give more in depth info as there's more to say. Yeah, the exact opposite of Longshot.

Featured user: None this issue Foamipedia by Vaznock Well, Avatar Fanon Wiki has been a thing of the past since the two wikis were merged. The wiki we once called our sister wiki is no longer in existence. But there's still one more wiki relating to Avatar, and it's Foamipedia, the Official Avatar Humor Wiki. The wiki, created by Andftw, is aimed to provide a barrage of articles making fun of the Avatar Universe and parodying it. You can find out all general information on the actual site. However, despite being a laid back and humorous type of site, the wiki still has a documented policy that must be followed in order to maintain success. All in all, you must take on the wiki maturely, but still bring your sense of humor with you. So if you have a sense of humor and you specialize in making people laugh, Foamipedia is your kind of place!
Last issue, I told you the exclusive story of The Last Airbender and it's new merchandise. But the tale doesn't stop there - you know good old Viacom, they're going to to milk this until it's dry, which is good for us. This time around we're delving deep into the stylistic influences on Avatar and touching upon the Japanese cult phenomenon: manga. At the end of last month, I reported on this for Wan Shi Tong's Library but left out some important details. That's because I want to keep you full of tension and anticipation for this issue XD. But seriously, folks, as you know, the Mangas will be adaptions of both the series and the Airbender film, drawn by actually Japanese Manga artist. Nickelodeon Global Publishing said to activeanime.com: "We’re excited to partner with [the Manga's publisher] Del Rey on these upcoming manga releases. Recreating and adapting the layered storylines and incredible, animated martial arts of the Avatar series and upcoming feature film in the manga style will allow fans to experience their favorite moment from the show over and over again." Del Ray similarly reported, "We’re excited to be working with Nickelodeon to bring these great stories to the manga audience. Avatar: The Last Airbender has shown incredible crossover appeal with manga fans. The release of The Last Airbender movie and original tie-in manga gives us the chance to share completely new stories with Avatar fans looking for more about Aang, Zuko, and their favorite characters." The Last Airbender is set to be released in theaters on July 2, 2010. Filming has ceased and Shymalan and his crew on working on the post-production. The teaser trailer has been released in theaters, the internet, and television, and the official one is likely to be released later this year. The official website is also up, located at http://www.thelastairbendermovie.com/ and fans can also follow it at the official Twitter page.

Oh no...you caught me. I'm not being loyal to Avatar Wiki! Yeah, my activity here has slowed down. Right now, I'm working on some of the smaller wikis that I contribute to. It's hard to stay very active when you edit across so many wikis. I think I edit at 16 or so wikis. I'll make more time for Avatar Wiki...it is the best. --Mattkenn3 Talk 23:46, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Another wiki help
Joey, since you're the one who uses bots the most, there's something I'd like to ask you. There's another wiki where I'm active, and the sysop there could use a help having a bot, you think you could instruct him, or at least point him in the right direction? Oh, it's not a wiki from the wiki community, it's Heroeswiki, I don't know if you have an account there, but if you don't, I think I can put you in touch with the sysop via email. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 00:36, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
- I just made an account at heroeswiki.com (I hope that's the one) and I'd be glad to answer any questions. If he wants realtime conversation I'd recommend he pop up at IRC, otherwise email or talk page is cool with me. Joey aa 01:01, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

This Summer by Vaznock As the summer begins to come to an abrupt conclusion, we can only hope that the summer of 2010 will bring us as much fortune and success as this one has. As we look back to all the changes and great ideas that have helped our wiki grow and prosper, we can now only swim in the aftermath of these changes. From April to June, our wiki was put in to major refinement. Because of what happened during those months, we now have a newsletter, a new and better administrative policy, a wiki that allows fanon, and a path that gave way to some immense summer fun and more changes, which includes:
However, our adventures on Avatar Wiki are far from over. In fact, they've just begun, as this Summer marks the beginning of the new Avatar Wiki! For example, it has been said that our wiki is lacking in forums and news. If these aspects are covered, we will become the ultimate Avatar site! So come down and participate this Autumn!
That's right folks, Dao Le, who was an animatic director for Avatar: The Last Airbender and therefore a member of the crew, has officially announced he supports Racebending and finds the casting for Airbender to be racist. The official Racebending.com released this statement given to them by Dao Le himself: BuddyTV reports that Le finds it "hard to believe they couldn't find one Asian actor to hold any of the lead protagonist parts." While doing animatics on the series, Le reportedly "believed" the characters were Asian, or Asian-mixed, and confirms that the series itself is Asian influenced, like many others have stated before - "With the pre-dominantly white cast, it feels like all the Asian/Eastern influences, origins, what have you, were just a backdrop for these characters." Not only this, but several other staff members have stated that they're flabergasted and support Racebending. Like I reported back in June, Sifu Kisu mentioned that legally he's unable to state his opinion, but was able to say that he wants to "say something so bad" and that "some of [the fans] are SO right & [they] don't even know." So only time will tell if even the crew of the show will boycott the movie, or, dare I say, even the co-creators themselves.
We're currently open to new ideas for making a new feature for Avatar Wiki's official newsletter! If you're interested, please submit your ideas on Avatar Wiki talk:The Ba Sing Se Times or email the editors! | |

Normally, this article would be about what happened. Today, this article is about what hasn't happened, from the editor. And a plea for some action. Chiefly, there are a few projects that need finishing. The most important among these is the article splitting project, which needs to be made a high priority. However, it is discussions where we'll need to pick up the pace. We need to do something about quite a few Improvements and Issues forums. See the discussion list to the right for a summary of the discussions that need immediate attention. The Ba Sing Se Times itself is looking for a new feature. All suggestions will be considered; please suggest on Avatar Wiki talk:The Ba Sing Se Times.
It's been a period of time since we have heard from the producers of The Last Airbender, but in the past week reports have circulated that they are working on a full-length trailer to be released for Christmas. Frank Marshall said on Twitter:
This is a significant gap between the teaser and the full-length, and there has been some criticism that the gap will make it likely for some to "forget" about the film.

Okay, because since you stated that he inserted jibberish into articles I thought you were referring to Eradikus, a user who had been adding nonsense about diapers to many articles. Joey, you may be right about that rollback thing, since this user completely destroyed the Zuko page, leaving it down to just the first few paragraphs. [edit] Anonymous Edits
I apologize if this is not the correct place to put this or if it has been brought up before.
I've noticed an amount of vandalism is instigated by unregistered users; is there any possibility of disabling anonymous editting of the wiki? This practice has been implemented on a number of wikis I've seen and has cut down on the number of negative or otherwise poor edits, although it should be noted the wikis in question are smaller in scope than this one. At any rate, this is likely due to registration creating a barrier to entry, small as it is, and ensures an editor has some amount of interest vested in the project. On the other hand, this also prevents those anonymous users that do provide constructive edits from doing so.
As well, I've observed that editors that make negative contributions receive hardly a penalty except for a slap on the wrist telling them not to do so again under pain of temporary block. If the edits are merely poor in judgment then it's understandable, but someone that actively disrupts the wiki's efforts has made his intentions clear from the start and should be dealt with decisively.
—M1O 23:41, November 24, 2009 (UTC)
- Hey M10,
Luckily, we here are rather fortunate to receive the little vandalism we do get, which compared to the mass amounts from other wikis I've dealt with is petty. And to this day, I think our vandalism is usually dealt with rather quickly, before it causes any harm. We have a great team here watching over the wiki; administrators block when needed and everyone reverts any foul edit as they see. Our blocks are strategically planned so that if an edit by an anonymous user or other user could be "a test edit" as they may not understand how to use the wiki yet, they can not be punished if they really didn't mean any harm, and subsequent ones can result in blocks if they show their edits are bad-faith.
As a community and whole we haven't actually discussed disabling edits by anonymous contributors (or by user lacking emai-confirmed, another possibility,) but in my opinion and I guess the rest of the community agrees with me on, is that it would do more harm than good. Reduce editing, reduce adding new information, dramatically reduce the amount of grammar/spelling fixes, etc., and would cause to fewer users registering as they'd find it stupid. I've seen this type of MW-modification used elsewhere - but in my opinion this isn't a good place for it. However, you are free to flag it up with the rest of the community.
Thanks for your help with vandalism nonetheless, it's quite appreciated! Joey aa 08:54, November 25, 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I'd like to point out that we have had this kind of discussion before, but nearly a year ago and when the wiki was a very different place. (I was just another new user back then.) The consensus at the time eventually was against implementing this kind of measure. I was a very minor participant in that discussion, but I agreed with the decision the others discussed and came to, and I still agree with it. Like Joey said, the wiki experiences far less vandalism than other wikis (Wikipedia, for instance, needs to employ a few bots to help), so I think we'd be annoying genuine, interested new users by implementing this kind of measure.
- Your (M1O) second point is an interesting one. I'll agree that we are far less harsh than many wikis on vandalism. Where others immediately block, we warn. Where others block infinitely, we block for a week or two. However, my theory on this is that deliberate harsh treatment of such editors only encourages and baits them. If you merely acknowledge that you know that they are doing this, it is less inflammatory. Obviously, we will eventually deal with people that continue vandalising without end - and, as you say, "decisively". :) Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 09:25, November 25, 2009 (UTC)
