Avatar Wiki - Excitement Coming This Summer, Join In!

Avatar Wiki has some incredibly exciting plans this Summer! We'd like to invite everyone on the wiki to join in the fun and make this wiki bigger and better than ever this Summer. We've got some big plans for the wiki, and we'll need all the help we can get.

What can I do?

There is so much you can do here this Summer, you'll never get bored!

Create a user group to collaborate with your fellow users on a project of your choice! Name it after your favorite organization from the series! Choose how you want to run your group! See this and this group for an example of a great user group.
Write a blog about anything - who are you favourite characters? Why? What do you think of the new movie? What do you think of how we run things on the wiki? You can also write reviews of episodes, advertise fanon or fan fiction that you've written, and so much more!
Jump into the forums and discuss the series and films with other Avatar fans! Ask your questions about the series, and answer others'! You can discuss anything about Avatar - your favourite characters, comparisons between characters and characters from other series, and much more!
Not satisfied? Jump on the wiki's chat service and talk about anything with other Avatar users - it doesn't have to be about Avatar! If you already have IRC, you can simply join #wikia-Avatar on freenode.
Help us make important decisions on the wiki's future by simply commenting on our proposals! Every registered user can vote almost everywhere! Jump in and play your part in the direction this wiki takes for the next few months, or even years.

Time flys by fast indeed - 2009 has gone by like a blur for many of us. As we near the end of the year, and we celebrate the holidays around the world in the snow or the surf, we thought it would be about time you heard from us - about what we've done this year, and what's coming, and how you can help.

What's happened this year?

Avatar Wiki and Avatar Fanon Wiki merger: In late June this year, Avatar Wiki and Avatar Fanon Wiki merged. While this was initially controversial, the move has definitely paid off! Fanon and fan fiction is the fastest growing part of the wiki, with a huge number of new contributors in the past few months trying their hand at it. Article growth in fanon has been phenomenal, the number doubling in the past six months. If this growth rate continues, fanon articles will soon outnumber canon articles. This is a testament to the hard work of our fanon community, and I'd like to thank our fanon admins for the excellence in what they do.
The Ba Sing Se Times: Earlier this year, we initiated a community newsletter project to be sent out to all subscribers fortnightly. While the project has not been without its difficulties, we are proud to say that circulation is unexpectedly high, with a consistent number of people continuing to subscribe. We always welcome the occasional contributor. Just send your column to The 888th Avatar by email.
Forum expansion We've also expanded the size, scope, and popularity of the forums quite a few times over. There are now forums to discuss Avatar, to discuss the upcoming film, and even speculation surrounding a new series. There is also a forum, Improvements and Issues, set up to discuss how the wiki is run. Everyone is always welcome at the forums to say whatever they want to say!
Administrative changes: In addition, for those who are interested, there were a number of sweeping administrative changes this year. We now elect our admins and bureaucrats, and we have a system set up for regulars who want to use the rollback tool to remove vandalism easily.

What's coming next year?

Next year, we seek to outdo 2009 by at least twice or three times over, and hopefully ten or twenty times over! With the release of The Last Airbender coming on July 2, there's much to be done.

Skin for films: While we haven't talked about it much yet, we will probably provide a brand new, darker skin specifically for the film, and shown on all articles about the film, as well as the main page. Look out for it in about May or June! (Or, if such things interest you, check the forum when we start planning it out.)
New film articles: Currently, while we do have an expansive article on The Last Airbender that is larger and more informative than that on Wikipedia, we plan to provide more articles about the film, and have them filled with useful bits come the film's release. Many existing articles, like Aang, will have film counterparts to keep information relevant.
Main page for film: Alongside skin changes for the main page, we will obviously also be undertaking a themed redesign of the main page for the release of the film. We will probably start talking about that in around March. Expect a lot of blue!
More fun ideas: Remember the contest we held earlier this year? Next year, we will hold more activities of that type. Look out for it in a blog announcement posted on the main page.

What can I do to help?

Plenty! While the canon articles are fairly informative, there is so much you can do to help us prepare for the release of the film in July.

Write a blog post. That is one of the biggest ways you can help us. We want to hear what you think about the film or anything related. It doesn't have to agree with what we say - in fact we'd love to hear a different opinion! Or if the film doesn't interest you - write reviews of episodes, advertise fanon or fan fiction that you've written.
