I tried to make sure that we got what we were building up to this whole time.
I wanted to give the characters a proper (unnarrated) introduction as well. The whole 'battle of the sexes' thing will still be here, just done as more a matter of principal and personal prejudice and not an actual law (which I always found kind of idiotic). Still, in this version, I've only left his decision ambiguous so far, and I'll let you to decide whether he went through with it or not.
The Legend of Aang: The Great North
EXT. NORTHERN SEAS – DAY
APPA practically skims the water as they fly toward their destination. SOKKA lies over the edge of the saddle, nervously peering into the water.
Is there any reason we’re flying this low?
He’s getting tired. Fast. We can’t afford falling out of the air, now, can we?
Besides, we haven’t seen anything for miles.
With our luck, there will be something.
AANG grumbles, almost sensing what’s coming.
Alright! We’re all a bit on edge. We can’t be far. Let’s just not go off on each other.
SOKKA and KATARA perch themselves sulkily on either side of the saddle. AANG breathes a sigh of relief and turns to view the ocean once more.
EXT. NORTHERN SEAS – MID-DAY
AANG is slouched lazily over APPA’s head, as the others nap in the background, a big smile on his face.
APPA floats down the ocean, but the angle shows that they are being watched by someone. AANG’s eyes droop as turns over on his side, his eyes flying open.
All at once, ocean raises itself, and enormous spikes of ice jump out of the ground at them. AANG is barely able to swerve aside to miss them. KATARA and SOKKA jolt awake, screaming as they lurch into the same side of the saddle.
APPA attempts to fly forward, but they are hit by another wave, and fall into the water. They all adjust themselves after the impact, finding themselves surrounded by boats with several men in them.
KATARA is the only one who grins.
Waterbenders. We’ve made it.
EXT. NORTHERN WATER TRIBE – DAY
APPA is guided by the WATERBENDERS through an icy crevice, until they see it.
The city is a spectacular white marvel to behold. It is cut into the side of a glacier, a small opening looking out onto the sea. Inside are large palaces and villages.
AANG, KATARA, and SOKKA can barely believe their eyes. Their mouths hang open, not wishing to interrupt the experience.
INT. NORTHERN WATER TRIBE – ARNOOK’S COURT – DAY
The THREE walk into the PALACE, standing before a seating of a few council members.
They take a bow before the COURT MEMBERS, before the head one steps down and motions them up.
You need not bow before us, Avatar. My name is Arnook, and I welcome you to our humble dwellings.
ARNOOK looks past AANG to see KATARA and SOKKA standing straight behind him, large, false smiles on their face.
We have received word of your coming… Yet, strangely, not of your company.
AANG nervously peers up at him.
With all due respect, Chief, I owe everything to these two.
Very well. What are your names?
KATARA and SOKKA look at each other, KATARA nodding to him.
SOKKA draws the DAGGER he was given earlier, holding it aloft.
We are the children of Chief Hakoda of the South.
ARNOOK stares at the DAGGER with great interest.
The Dagger of Iskyo… The symbol of the chiefs.
AANG is utterly shocked by the news, looking at them with his eyes wide open.
(under his breath)
ARNOOK’s smile returns.
It has been a great while since we had contact with our Southern bretheren. Your company is just as welcome.
SOKKA bows slightly to ARNOOK. As he raises, something catches his eye; a beautiful white-haired woman sitting at the far end of the court.
He can barely keep himself from staring at her, even as KATARA attempts to jolt him awake.
ARNOOK meets his eye-line.
Ah. Of course. Avatar, this is my daughter.
She stands, bowing before them.
SOKKA smiles and bows in response to her.
ARNOOK turns to face him.
Arnook… There is a reason that my friend and I have come here.
EXT. NORTHERN WATER TRIBE – ARNOOK’S COURT - DAY
YUE stands by the railings of the palace, AANG and ARNOOK talking in the background.
SOKKA, his arms awkwardly behind his back, comes to join her.
Uh… Hi. Name’s Sokka.
Hello, Sokka. It is a pleasure to meet you.
He seems to think over his next words carefully, causing an awkward rift in the talk. YUE tilts her head, attempting to motion him on.
So, uh, Princess, huh? Interesting position to hold, right?
YUE looks confused by his remark.
I… I suppose.
I don’t know if you heard, but I’m a bit of a Prince from my home, as well.
YUE begins to nod somewhat confusedly.
Let me start over. Look, I’m gonna have a bit of… free-time while I’m here… Did you want to-
You should have just said so. You see that bridge down there?
She points to a small bridge over a canal. SOKKA nods adamantly.
If you want to talk, meet me down there tonight? Right?
SOKKA nods furiously once more. She laughs and walks away from the balcony.
INT. NORTHERN WATER TRIBE – ARNOOK’S COURT – DAY
AANG and KATARA have finished their plea to ARNOOK.
Never fear, my friends.
He snaps his fingers, and an OLD MAN steps down, crossing his arms over himself dignifiedly.
This is master Pakku. He’s the finest teacher we have. He’ll be more than happy to teach you.
PAKKU surveys the two, who stand over-eagerly as he does.
The boy, yes. The girl, no.
The smiles for both fade.
I cannot teach her. It’s against tradition, and I will not be the one to break it.
Pakku. Make an exception for him, please.
We’ll be more than happy to find someone else.
All eyes turn to AANG. KATARA stares desperately at her.
I’ve travelled half of the world with this girl. She’s amazing. She’s a great fighter and a better bender.
KATARA closes her eyes, dreading the outcome.
And she hasn’t come this far to be cast off by some stubborn old master.
PAKKU raises his eyebrow.
So, what will it be?
PAKKU turns and walks away.
He sighs and turns around.
This is not a request, it is an order.
PAKKU sighs and looks at the two once more.
