This was prime for revision. The series' scenes in the village are rather drawn out an unecessary for a film, and the film's version is almost blindingly short. There should be enough developement between Aang, Katara, and Sokka to make later events make sense.
Aang should be kept in his playful, innocent state, which can be dealt with through his attitude to Katara, and his interactions with the village children.
Additionally, Kanna gets a biref introduction as well, to show her concern with Aang being in the village.
The Legend of Aang : The Airbender
EXT. SOUTHERN WATER TRIBE - DAY
A small surrounding of hovels is seen around a fire pit. Several women are seen working around.
INT. KATARA’S HOVEL – DAY
KATARA tends to AANG on the bottom of a hovel, with a pot and fire next to them. SOKKA stands over them.
We shouldn’t have brought him back.
Sokka, I really don’t want to hear this anymore.
So you don’t think there’s anything strange about this whatsoever?
KATARA pats AANG’S forehead with a rag.
I didn’t say that. It is a bit strange.
“A bit strange”? We find a kid frozen under the hulk of a Fire Nation warship, claiming to be the last airbender and that’s all you have to say?
We don’t know anything about him yet.
She turns back to AANG, who’s starting to wake up.
KATARA shushes him.
AANG begins to groggily lean forward.
AANG’S POV: SOKKA and KATARA fade slowly into AANG’S vision. KATARA smiles at him.
AANG begins to squirm in panic, but KATARA grips his shoulder and calms him.
Aang! Aang, calm down! We’re in our village.
AANG begins to settle back down, gripping his head.
KATARA looks for something to say.
I knocked you out.
AANG looks to SOKKA, bewilderedly. SOKKA looks awkwardly around the tent.
I uh… I wanted to avoid the inevitable…
AANG looks at SOKKA, still quite amazed. KATARA shares his same expression.
SOKKA backs out of the tent.
I’ll… just… go… outside.
He rushes out.
KATARA turns back to tending AANG.
What’s with him?
I’ve never been able to find out.
Thanks for saving me. I could have frozen out there.
No problem. You have a bit of a fever. Not much, though.
AANG clutches his sides from cold.
Yeah, coats aren’t exactly common where I’m from.
We have some extra parkas in here somewhere.
AANG begins to scan around the room with his eyes.
Where are you from, anyway?
Southern Air Temple.
She stops patting his forehead and locks eyes with him.
So you are an airbender.
AANG points to the arrow tattoo on his forehead.
This is a bit of a giveaway, isn’t it?
KATARA chuckles (almost in a false, trying-too-hard way), and reaches over his forehead for something, when AANG looks between her arms.
AANG focuses on the necklace KATARA’S wearing, a blue gem with a few water swirls carved into it. AANG looks back up to face KATARA.
That’s a nice necklace.
KATARA looks down to AANG, clutching it and smiling at him.
Thanks. It’s my mom’s.
He smiles back.
So, how did you end up down here?
AANG’s expression turns dark, as he looks around, thinking for what to say.
KATARA turns her head to the noise. She faces back to AANG.
You gonna be alright?
Of course. Go ahead.
Uh, your… staff thing… is over there.
AANG looks over to the corner, seeing his staff resting in a corner. He looks back, grinning.
KATARA gives a brief grin and walks out.
EXT. SOUTHERN WATER TRIBE – DAY
SOKKA stands in the foreground, looking bewilderedly off at whatever lies off-screen. KATARA exits the hovel and walks up to him, her expression matching his as she sees what lies ahead.
We see what they were looking at; APPA, floating a couple feet off of the ground, and several children hanging off of him.
KATARA looks to SOKKA.
I didn’t know he could fly…
How did you find it?
I didn’t. It found us.
KATARA starts cautiously walking towards him.
I covered our tracks, I checked behind us our whole way back. How?
One of the smaller children hangs off of APPA’S feet.
SOKKA walks to face KATARA.
I know you’re fascinated with this kid for some reason, but we need to face facts! There’s too much about this that doesn’t add up!
AANG exits the hovel, now dressed in a tan-colored parka. He sees APPA and grins.
SOKKA looks to face AANG, as AANG rushes toward APPA.
AANG mounts APPA and manages to bring him down. SOKKA extends his spear, but KATARA pushes it down.
APPA lands on the ground with a thud, and the children scatter.
Meet my bison. Appa.
SOKKA looks on with absolute bewilderment.
That’s a pet?
KATARA walks forward.
That’s a pet.
AANG dismounts APPA as several children gather around him.
WATER TRIBE GIRL
Are you a real airbender?
Of course I am.
A skeptical boy, TENBO, chuckles at him.
AANG leans forward.
You don’t believe me?
An elderly woman, KANNA, exits a hovel and gasps at what she sees.
AANG is creating a small tornado with his bending, KATARA is attempting to calm the children, and SOKKA is attempting to get a small child unstuck from APPA’S horn.
Kurai, get off of here!
KATARA whips around to see KANNA staring at them.
SOKKA lets go of KURAI, letting him fall to the ground. He takes his place next to KATARA.
KANNA looks at KATARA and SOKKA, absolutely furious with them.
INT. KANNA’S HOVEL - DAY
KANNA sits facing the two, a fire separating them.
KATARA and SOKKA remain silent, and clearly a bit embarrassed.
Look, I can explain everything.
KANNA tilts her head up, preparing to listen.
SOKKA raises his arm and points his finger to KATARA.
It’s her fault.
KANNA grits her teeth and closes her eyes.
How is this in any way my fault?!
SOKKA begins to count on his fingers.
You broke the sphere and had the idea to bring him back to the village.
And you blew up that Fire Nation ship!
KANNA looks at the two, a new fire in her eye. After a beat, she shakes her head and calms.
Never mind. We have more pressing matters.
KATARA and SOKKA exchange glances.
That boy cannot stay here any longer than he already has.
Why? He’s not given us any reason not to trust him.
SOKKA widens his eyes in disgust at the last remark.
He’s given us every reason not to trust him!
KANNA’S fury returns.
Will you two stop bickering for two minutes?
The two sink down, ashamed.
KANNA looks at the two of them.
Now, you need to get that boy out of this village.
You know what the Fire Nation did to the Air Nomads. Imagine what they’d do if they found him!
Sadness overcomes KATARA, as she looks over to SOKKA. He nods.
EXT. KANNA’S HOVEL – DAY
KATARA and SOKKA exit the hovel. KATARA walks away from it. She closes her eyes, sighs, and starts.
She opens her eyes as she hears no answer. SOKKA walks up to her, and they both look up as they hear gusts of wind.
AANG flies through the air, on an orange glider. The children cheer him on.
KATARA and SOKKA stare on, mouths wide open and eyes glazed over. They subtly follow AANG as he flies through the sky.
I don’t see how this day could get any stranger.
AANG continues to fly around, before landing in the village square and transforming his glider back into a staff. The children all sit around him.
He surveys around him, before grinning and taking a bow. The children break into applause.
KATARA almost involuntarily breaks into applause as well, but SOKKA shoots her a glare, and she stops.
