So, here we come to the most easily ridiculable part of the original film; the Imprisoned segment.

This scene is so bizarre for so many reasons, for one, trying to keep Haru as a character when not even naming him, or attempting to still keep the prison aspect while missing the point of the original scene.

It is a hard scene to work into the narrative, but in my opinion, it is an important one.

If there was one thing that Shyamalan understood right about this scene versus the cartoon, it was that this should be Aang's major reveal as the Avatar, something which wasn't really done much in the cartoon, save for maybe Kyoshi Island.

My alterations may not be perfect, I have a feeling that they may improve on some of the more flawed aspects of the original scene. Enjoy.

The Legend of Aang: Team Avatar on Earth Kingdom

EXT. SENLIN – DAY

A decently sized Earth Kingdom village sits near a hillside. Our heroes walk into view, KATARA and SOKKA draped in beige cloaks, and hoods covering their faces.

SOKKA

I really wish we didn’t have to do this.

KATARA

We’re dangerously low on… well, everything. We need to get something.

AANG walks up behind them, still in his normal garb. KATARA gasps and pushes him back onto a rock.

AANG

(surprised)

Gah! What?

KATARA

You can’t go out like this. We are deep in enemy territory, you hear me? They’ll shred you apart before anyone else can react.

                AANG
But-

KATARA

Put your cloak on.

AANG begrudgingly agrees.

INT. SENLIN – DAY

They walk through the town, discovering it to be quite decrepit and bad-spirited. The greyness of the color palette gives it a decayed look. The people broken down, and a watchtower bearing the Fire Nation emblem looming over everything.

They come to an alley where they see many civilians and EARTHBENDERS harassing a group of FIRE NATION soldiers. While KATARA and SOKKA walk ahead, AANG watches on. The struggle soon turns violent as some of the EARTHBENDERS begin to chuck stones at the soldiers, and a scuffle breaks out, with the soldiers beginning to beat the civilians into submission.

AANG can only look on in horror, but is yanked away by KATARA. She leads him into another shop.

AANG

What was that?

KATARA

A protest, I guess.

AANG

Is every town like this?

KATARA sighs.

KATARA

Wait here. We’ll only be a minute.

KATARA goes to join SOKKA, who’s already ordering from the shopkeeper.

AANG looks through the blinds as he sees the civilians being lead away bound. He nervously looks to KATARA and SOKKA.

SOKKA begins to put the supplies in a small satchel.

SOKKA

You’re the one who wanted supplies…

KATARA

Shut up…

KATARA hands some money over to the shopkeeper. They both turn around to see AANG.

KATARA

Alright, let’s get…

They both stop cold as they see that AANG is no longer where they left him.

SOKKA
How does he do that?

CUT TO:

The civilians from earlier are lead away, their arms bound. The soldiers turn at the sound of near foot-steps. They turn to see AANG facing them, a determined expression on his face (his hood still up).

AANG

Let them go.

The soldiers give a look of distaste and continue on their way.

AANG

Sirs!

FIRE NATION #1

Let us be, boy.

AANG

Not as long as those men are in your custody.

KATARA and SOKKA rush desperately onto the scene, both expressions turning horrified at the unfolding scene.

FIRE NATION #2

(to bystanders)

Whose child is this? Clearly he has caught too much sun.

AANG

You may dismiss me all you want, but you won’t walk away from this any differently.

One soldier begins to laugh and walks toward him.

FIRE NATION #1

And, what do we expect to fear from you, boy?

KATARA begins to visibly panic.

SOKKA

Don’t panic. Just as long as he doesn’t…

AANG withdraws his hood, revealing his tattoo. The soldier recoils in disbelief.

FIRE NATION #1

(under his breath)

It cannot be… No…

KATARA closes her eyes in grief.

KATARA
(flatly)

We’re dead.

AANG begins to walk toward the soldiers. The civilians begin to show unrest.

AANG

Too long have you forced injustice onto these people. Too long have they lived under your tyrannical rule. No longer. I am the Avatar. And I have returned.

Another soldier simply saunters forward and attempts to strike AANG, but AANG stops his hand.

FIRE NATION #2

This is nothing more than a foolish boy with… paint. Meant to scare us, no doubt.

AANG releases his grip.

FIRE NATION #2

Run along now, boy.

AANG obstinately stays. The soldier angers.

FIRE NATION #2

Listen…

The soldier turns as he feels something strike his back. He turns to see many of the civilians now poised against him. He sneers and turns back to AANG.

FIRE NATION #2

You have no idea how much trouble you’ve gotten yourself into.

AANG looks past the guard to the civilians, one of whom breaks a small grin and nods.

AANG

Neither do you.

AANG pushes him away and begins to form a sphere of air around himself.

SMASH CUT TO:

Several soldiers run fearfully from the city streets, as SOKKA and several of the EARTHBENDERS pursue them. As the camera continues, we see KATARA taking on several NON-BENDING soldiers herself.

As we continue further, we see AANG aiding several more EARTHBENDERS as they dismantle the tower from earlier. As it crumbles, they pursue several more soldiers.

SOKKA ends up clubbing one more soldier as they race beyond city limits, a gleeful, but manic expression on his face. The remaining civilians and AANG come up behind him.

SOKKA

Yeah! Think twice before showing your face in this town, again, huh!

As SOKKA turns to face the resulting silence, his expression fades.

SOKKA

What?

AANG and KATARA stand next to him as they notice that the civilians begin to fall to their knees.

AANG looks nervously over the crowd, as one approaches him, and holds his arm aloft.

CIVILIAN

The Avatar has returned!

The others hold their arms up and yell in unison, clearly a praise of some sort.

AANG breaks a small grin.

CUT TO:

Several prisoners are seen being released from their confines.

AANG, KATARA, and SOKKA sit nearby on some steps, noticing the happy reunions taking place.

SOKKA

Aang, that might have been the stupidest thing ever done.

AANG

It worked, didn’t it?

KATARA sighs and looks to SOKKA.

AANG (CONT’D)

I’ve been gone for a hundred years. These places deserve to be liberated.

KATARA looks to him.

AANG (CONT’D)

I mean, it’s my ultimate goal, anyway, isn’t it?

KATARA sighs and breaks a begrudged smile.

SOKKA

You’re crazy… More so than I thought…

AANG

There’s a lot of distance between us and the North… We can afford to do a little good, can’t we?

SOKKA closes his eyes and looks to KATARA. KATARA’s smile turns genuine as she looks into AANG’s eyes.

CUT TO:

ANIMATED

MONTAGE: AANG and CO. in a small village, AANG taking care of a soldier. It soon turns to an illustration, which is handed to a commander. The commander reads aloud the news to his men, whose spirits almost visibly brighten as they hear it. The next day, they are seen victorious at a battle.

SOKKA takes care of several soldiers with KATARA as AANG deals with a base in the background. Several earthbenders fight in the background.

A large metal prison is seen, where every prisoner turns their head to the opening gates. AANG and CO. stand there triumphantly, the gates wide open behind them.

As a village presents their thanks to the group, SOKKA takes notice of a hooded woman in green dress, who smiles flirtingly at him in return. SOKKA smiles awkwardly back.

A final image is seen, this of another victorious EARTHBENDER battle.

FADE TO:

INT. FIRE NATION WAR ROOM – DAY

The same image is now seen on a pictograph that OZAI holds as he walks to his throne.

OZAI (V.O.)

Seventeen hundred casualties at An Kou… Nine hundred at Koasan…

Several generals are seen disturbed and concerned at the news.

OZAI finally makes his way to his throne.

OZAI (V.O.) (CONT’D)

Two thousand… at Gaipan. These are not the sort of figures we were seeing even a few months ago, gentlemen. I shouldn’t have to tell you what the variable is, and yet I almost feel I should.

SHINU

It isn’t possible.

Attention shifts to him.

SHINU (CONT’D)

How can so much progress stem from a scrawny, pompous, young boy?

OZAI

Because perhaps that is not what the world views him as.

SHINU looks confused.

OZAI (CONT’D)

To us, perhaps, he is simply a small boy. But if we allow them to think even for a second that they stand a chance of success, than this disobedience will continue. And we have come too far to allow this to derail us. In the name of my forefathers, he will be stopped!
