I feel this scene offers something I think we need at this point. For one, an emotional moment with both our antagonist and our protagonists. And, two, a major character revelation which practically was glossed over in the original film; Katara's ability to waterbend.

This is a big deal considering her people's suffering, and I think this scene does a good job in dealing with the insecurity that stems from such a thing (something to be settled within the film's second half)

It is also fair to mention that this is the last scene with the trio until the Northern Water Tribe. Excited?

The Legend of Aang: Revelations and Confessions

EXT. ZUKO’S SHIP – NIGHT

ZUKO is engaged in another fight with his men, however, he uses more bending than anything else.

IROH watches with anticipation. As one of the men is knocked down, he nods to him.

The soldier gets up and sends a stream of fire careening toward ZUKO. ZUKO quickly sets one arm in front of himself, receiving the blast through his fingers, but soon succumbing to pain and falling to his knees.

IROH rushes to his aid. ZUKO groans in frustration.

ZUKO

I can never seem to pull that one off…

IROH

With good reason. This is the most difficult of practices.

ZUKO

I don’t care if it’s founded, I should I be able to do this!

ZUKO dons a robe and takes a place on the ship’s higher deck.

IROH

Perhaps you should take the night off.

ZUKO

I don’t dare.

IROH

It is almost winter, and it shall be a very cold night. Do you not wish to-

ZUKO

Uncle!

IROH walks closer.

IROH

Zuko, you cannot keep this up. You do not eat, you do not sleep. You must rest.

ZUKO

I do not need it.

IROH walks right up behind him.

IROH

Zuko, please. Everyone of your forefathers has attempted this task. Do not succumb to their madness.

ZUKO squints in shock.

ZUKO

“Madness…?”

He turns to face IROH, his eyes full of near-hatred.

ZUKO

Is it madness to wish to reclaim my place in my father’s court? Is it madness to wish to clear my name? Is it madness to wish to deal with the greatest threat to what I know? Is it, Uncle?

IROH

Listen to yourself. You are in your prime. Are you going to waste away on a fool’s errand?

ZUKO

What else is there for me? Do you wish to me stop now, so close to my goal, and live as a peasant?

IROH

(growing angrier)

What if you should return victorious? Do you expect to be let back with open arms, as if past events did not transpire? Does that sound like the man you left back home?

ZUKO

(snapping)

Enough! I’ll hear no more of this!

IROH hangs his head and returns inside.

IROH

Forgive me.

ZUKO turns around and stares into the horizon, clutching his sides from cold.

CUT TO:

EXT. CAMPSITE – NIGHT

AANG is fast asleep in his sleeping bag, sleeping peacefully, but stirring to the sounds of gentle splashes nearby.

First checking around him to see if SOKKA is still asleep, he climbs out of his pack, and goes to the source.

As the splashes grow louder, he ducks himself within a shrub, peaking over to see the source.

KATARA stands by the edge of the lake, gently moving the water around herself.
AANG looks on with great surprise, almost entranced by her movements. Soon, he stands up.

AANG

Katara?

KATARA screams and whips around, taking the water with her and soaking AANG.

She gasps and walks over to him.

KATARA

I’m so sorry, Aang.

AANG meets her eyes.

AANG

Why didn’t you tell me?

KATARA

Look, I-

AANG

I can’t believe it. A waterbending master is just what I need and there’s been one under my nose the whole time.

KATARA

Aang-

AANG

You could have helped me this whole time! Why didn’t you tell me?

KATARA

(snapping)

Because I’m not allowed to, all right!

AANG widens his eyes. KATARA seats herself next to him.

KATARA

It’s a curse. My whole life it’s been a danger.

AANG

What do you mean?

KATARA

My mother was killed because they thought she was a waterbender. I was told my whole life to keep it hidden…

She pauses and looks down.

KATARA (CONT’D)
Even though it was all I had left.

AANG clearly is upset with himself.

KATARA (CONT’D)

My dad left a couple of months after they killed her, and I couldn’t do anything else but practice. In a weird way, it almost made me feel close to her.

AANG

I’m sorry. I really am.

KATARA

I was hoping… That I’d be able to get myself a master too once we got to the North.

AANG gets up from his spot.

AANG

Well, come on…

KATARA

What?

AANG

Let’s practice together. I’ve got to start sometime, don’t I?

{C} KATARA smiles a bit and gets up to join him.
