Before you ask, this is mostly set up for a fake-out.
It's not that I didn't want to go with the cartoon's version of this, it's that I couldn't. With the way this script is structured, the, uh, reasons for Zhao's attack against Zuko are not even present in the story yet.
So, I worked up a different scene, within the barriers of what I was doing in terms of this story's layout.
Also, happy Book Three! (even for those, like me, too busy working to watch them)
The Legend of Aang: Complications
INT. ZUKO’S SHIP – QUARTERS – DUSK
ZUKO stares at the ceiling, lazily reclining and throwing a small ball at the bulkhead.
He alerts to the sound of a door opening, as he notices IROH’s head peeping in.
What is it, Uncle?
We have a visitor, Zuko.
ZHAO steps in, surveying ZUKO in his state.
Hard at work, I see.
What do you want, Zhao?
ZHAO paces over to another corner.
Thanks to a few sources, I’ve been able to determine the Avatar’s flight pattern. And, with his course, we believe he’s taken refuge in the North.
ZUKO looks nervously to IROH.
Well, with such a perfect course of action planned out… I am now preparing an invasion force to attack the tribe.
What does this have to do with me?
You have to understand, I need all the men I can get… So, I’ve inducted your ship.
ZUKO is in utter anguish, leaping up from the bed and facing ZHAO directly.
Well… To be more precise, I’ve taken your crew. The ship itself is still yours to do with what you wish.
You have no right to do this!
I have every right. Certainly you cannot deny a General, can you?
ZUKO simply stands there, his anger festering. With no opposition from ZUKO, ZHAO raises his eyebrow, and begins to walk out.
Iroh, my offer does still stand. Would you wish to join our ranks once more?
ZUKO stares off at the wall, going through several things in his head.
I think not, General. My place is with my nephew.
ZUKO looks over to ZHAO, his mind still absent.
Suit yourself, then. I’ll have a transcript sent to you, if you wish.
ZHAO is about to leave.
ZHAO and IROH both turn to him.
He’s going with you, Zhao.
IROH turns absolutely shocked, looking between ZHAO and ZUKO.
ZHAO raises an eyebrow.
Well… Why not, General?
Oh no, I couldn’t possibly-
Uncle. I insist.
He’s going with you.
A chance for the Dragon of the West to prove himself, once more?
IROH looks absolutely baffled.
We’re departing tomorrow morning. I hope to see you there.
IROH looks curiously at ZUKO.
ZUKO packs a small pack for IROH, as IROH sits nearby, looking confusedly at ZUKO still.
I was going to stay with you. Why did you speak for me?
You deserve to go, Uncle. You’re still in your prime, you shouldn’t be trailing after some ungrateful brat.
Don’t say that. You speak as if you’ve already been ruined.
Maybe I have. You, however, still have a reputation to lose.
IROH smiles somewhat.
Where will you go?
Oh, don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.
IROH looks down at the floor.
EXT. DOCKYARDS – DAWN
IROH and the rest of ZUKO’s crew walk toward ZHAO’s ship, as IROH looks back.
ZUKO’s ship departs from the docks.
IROH sadly turns back and begins walking again.
JEE marches to the ship, looking apprehensively over his shoulder.
