I was having a conversation with TarrlokUltimateWaterbender about whether or not Azula is a sociopath and it was keeping me awake at night wondering about the answer.
I said that I could argue both ways. So I decided to do some research in the DSM-IV, as all crazy people do at two o'clock in the morning.
Some of the characteristics of someone with Antisocial Personality Disorder, which is the actual disease of a sociopath, are:
- Not showing a sense of empathy
- High self confidence
- Having charisma or being charming
- Unable to accept the consequences of one's actions
- Shows boredom frequently
- Absence of nervousness
- Lying frequently
- Has to be about 18 to be diagnosed, but has to show signs before age fifteen
Of course, not all of these signs are present in a sociopath. And I am not a doctor, so I'm not diagnosing people.
So does Azula have any of these qualities?
As for not showing empathy, Azula does apologize to Ty-Lee, which shows that she does feel some remorse. She does show high confidence, but that's normal for some people. Azula is extremely charismatic and crafty. Azula doesn't seem to think she is doing wrong. Azula was shown being disinterested often and she never seemed nervous in the face of a fight. She lied quite frequently, and was very good at it, considering that Toph couldn't sense any changes in her breath or heartbeat. She did seem aggressive. And Azula is fourteen during ATLA, so she does show signs.
But does this mean she's a sociopath?
I think it's up to interpretation. So what do you think? I'm all for conversation.
