As I have done for Book Three: Change, this is a scene by scene analysis of the trailer for Book Four: Balance. Time codes indicated are for the youtube video. This was a great trailer, one that I might say would perhaps be better suited if this Book was called Change instead, as there were a lot of significant changes to the status quo of the series. I'll add my own speculations and opinions along with the analysis.

  1. 0:00 - 0:03. A black and white shot of Korra bound in chains by the Red Lotus from Book Three with Tenzin saying "there would no Air Nation without Avatar Korra". Nothing new here.
  2. 0:04 - 0:07 Another black and white shot of Korra from Book Three, this time her being asphyxiated by Zaheer. Tenzin again says that "she opened the portals and somehow the world began anew for us". The trailer already feels different because it's the first one to use scenes from a previous season. Unless, of course, these black and white scenes are actual flashbacks in Book Four. It's still a different trailer because it didn't begin with a spinning circular design.
  3. 0:07 - 0:11 Black and white dishevelled and Avatar State Korra reaches out to Tonraq, again from Book Three, maybe flashback in Book Four. Tenzin says "and she was even willing to lay down her own life".
  4. 0:12 - 0:14 Tenzin "in order to protect ours" to Korra's single tear from the last take of Book Three.
  5. 0:15 - 0:19 "Three years later". Another big change to the series' status quo. This isn't the first time we had a time-skip between seasons, but it's the first time the skip is in years instead of months. The letters have a slightly green tinge to it.
  6. 0:20 - 0:24 The first shot that can conclusively be said to be from Book Four is the back shot of Korra, cutting her own hair with a dagger. The dagger has blue designs, indicating Water Tribe. In the background it seems to be the ocean. Korra is wearing a sleeveless shirt that appears to be green.
  7. 0:25 - 0:44 The words Book Four: Balance, the Final Season show again with the same green tint, and in the background, the Earth Kingdom symbol against a metal grid, the symbol of Zaofu fades into view. I begin to lose hope that we see much of the Fire Nation as many expected.
  8. 0:44 - 0:45 Korra's eyes opens dramatically. She's sweating. Kinda like she woke up from a nightmare. Maybe some PTSD from what happened with Zaheer. It wouldn't be the first time she had nightmares, as she also had those with Amon.
  9. 0:45 - 0:46 Kai and Opal appear to be sky-diving, with a very modern-looking suit that is kinda like a flying squirrel. I hope this is a new thing for all the airbenders. It's nice to see them looking more modern. I also wonder if that defeats the purpose of Zaheer's achievement in flight. Can they fly up from the ground like it's been done with gliders before? Can they stay afloat in the same spot or do they move like sky-divers do?
  10. 0:47 - 0:48 Kuvira metalbends plates from her uniform against someone. She's against a rocky background.
  11. 0:48 - 0:49 Korra, in the same green shirt from the hair-cutting scene throws a punch. She has a bracelet suspiciously similar to Toph's meteor bracelet on her arm. In the background there are lots of what I assume to be guards or soldiers, all wearing uniforms and masks. They're mostly green and they have metal plates, so again some Zaofu influence, also seen in the flags. We can quickly see a mecha tank to the left.
  12. 0:49 - 0:50 Two people fight using new mecha tanks. They seem to be in a forest, with a mountain as the background.
  13. 0:50 - 0:51 Korra earthbends to protect herself from a rock. She seems to be in some sort of arena and there are people on stands cheering. I think of Earth Rumble Six.
  14. 0:51 - 0:52 A bison I suppose is Oogi is pulled down by vines. I think this means a visit to the Foggy Swamp. I wasn't particularly fond of the swamp, so I hope they can do something more interesting with it this time. It'll be interesting to see how to Foggy Swamp Tribe is these days, and what advancements to plantbending could have happened as well. There are three people on the bison, and it seems to be Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. They're wearing the new sky-diving suit as well.
  15. 0:52 - 0:53 Kuvira bends something out of the screen, probably metal.
  16. 0:53 - 0:54 Korra as she was in her battle against Zaheer firebends in the Avatar State. There are vines in the background, so either the Foggy Swamp, or maybe the Spirit Wilds from Republic City.
  17. 0:55 Korra in her Earth Kingdom clothes, presumably in the swamp, waterbends against someone offscreen.
  18. 0:56 - 0:57 A lighting attack from a mecha tank hits the ground, and Bolin dodged it. Something that maybe lava is in the left bottom corner of the screen. Bolin is wearing similar clothes to Kuvira, and he has a new shorter haircut as well. Maybe he's joined her?
  19. 0:57 - 0:58 Suyin looks either a prisoner or she's inside an opened mecha tank. She sighs.
  20. 0:58 - 1:00 Several Zaofu airships, several what I'm assuming are Zaofu mecha tanks (maybe Varrick's improved them) and several Zaofu flags. I'm thinking that either Zaofu is trying to take control of the Earth Kingdom or trying to gain independence at this point.
  21. 1:00 - 1:01 Bolin does an earthbending assisted jump in a forest, the same one the mecha tanks were fighting in.
  22. 1:01 - 1:02 Someone metalbends a lot of mercury around Korra, dragging her down in it. Between this and the plantbending earlier, this really gets my hopes of of seeing different styles of bending. I hope we get to see more sandbending.
  23. 1:03 - 1:04 Opal jumps off of an air bison's back with a flip. Maybe she's joined Team Avatar as part of her roaming as an Air Nomad.
  24. 1:04 - 1:06 Some mecha tanks try to walk against a very strong wind, which I suspected is airbending.
  25. 1:06 - 1:07 A metal gate opens revealing Korra, in Water Tribe clothes, but with the new haircut. Above the gate one of those glowing crystals used in the Earth Kingdom.
  26. 1:07 - 1:08 Korra is in Republic City and she earthbends against something or someone. You can see a few vines around buildings.
  27. 1:08 - 1:09 A flag unfolds over a gate. It has the Zaofu symbol on it and something written on it. We see Kuvira, and older guy, a few military looking guys, and a few mecha tanks.
  28. 1:09 - 1:10 Korra firebends to protect two people in Air Nomad sky-diving suits. She's in her Earth Kingdom clothes.
  29. 1:10 - 1:11 Someone with a cool-looking double bladed weapon swings in the sky from a cable. We can't tell who it is, but I see dark hair and a pony tail. It looks like a man but I could be wrong.
  30. 1:11 - 1:12 Jinora flies through a vine covered section of Republic City with the sky-diving suit. Her hair looks the same as pre-shaving, but the arrow is clear.
  31. 1:13 Earth Kingdom Korra resists against something offscreen.
  32. 1:14 - 1:15 Korra, Asami and either Mako or Iroh drive through Republic City as Water Tribe Korra jumps and airbends.
  33. 1:15 - 1:16 Earth Kingdom Korra is scaling up vines and one of them rips from her weight.
  34. 1:16 - 1:17 Asami in a pony-tail electroshocks one of the military looking guys with Kuvira on top of a train.
  35. 1:18 Water Tribe Korra looks behind her.
  36. 1:18 - 1:19 A Zaofu mecha tanks shows off the flame thrower.
  37. 1:19 - 1:20 Bolin lavabends. I cheer. We need more showcases of sub-styles of bending.
  38. 1:20 - 1:21 Korra protects herself and Asami from what I assume is a metal weapon thrown their way. They seem to be inside a train.
  39. 1:21 - 1:22 Kuvira dodges a fire attack. She's long lost relative of Mako because they have the same eyebrows.
  40. 1:22 - 1:24 Kuvira escapes from a mecha tank just as it's destroyed by another mecha tank.
  41. 1:24 Dramatic zoom in on Kuvira.
  42. 1:25 Korra metalbends the top of a vehicle on Republic City.
  43. 1:25 Someone who I think is Mako but is dressed in green firebends to protect a guy I don't recognize. They're in a Chinatown like place with lots of lanterns.
  44. 1:26 - 1:27 Kuvira dodges an air blast and a rock.
  45. 1:27 - 1:28 Someone breaks into a vine covered, old-looking structure.
  46. 1:29 - 1:31 New look ragged Bolin earthbends.
  47. 1:31 - 1:34 Tenzin's kids fly from a sky-bison in the sky-diving suit. Ikki and Meelo have longer hair.
  48. 1:34 - 1:35 Zaheer battle Korra disappears as someone walks by as if she's a vision.
  49. 1:36 - 1:37 Someone I think is Korra walks towards one of the spirit portals. It's snowing.
  50. 1:38 - 1:40 Earth Kingdom Korra walks through some vines.
  51. 1:41 - 1:42 Water Tribe Korra sits in her wheelchair.
  52. 1:43 - 1:44 Earth Kingdom Korra looks banged up in the swamp as some water splashes around.
  53. 1:45 - 1:46 Korra sits on top of a tree root in the swamp.
  54. 1:46 - 1:47 Kuvira stands in front of several uniform soldiers holding Zaofu flags. There's a mecha tank.
  55. 1:48 Opal looks down wearing her sky-diver suit in the middle of a cheering Earth Kingdom crowd.
  56. 1:49 - 1:50 Zuko, his daughter (whose design kinda disappoints me), Raiko and Tenzin seat together. Behind them a few metalbender cops.
  57. 1:51 - 1:52 Korra looks tough against Zaofu mooks.
  58. 1:52 - 1:53 An air bison flies through some mountains.
  59. 1:54 - 1:55 Korra is in a healing pool being healed by Katara.
  60. 1:55 - 1:56 Someone drops to their knees on the desert.
  61. 1:56 - 1:57 Kuvira prepares to fight.
  62. 1:57 - 1:58 Korra looks frightened.
  63. 1:58 - 1:59 Zhu Li commands a Zaofu mecha tank.
  64. 1:59 - 2:00 Korra and someone wearing dark clothes are greeted by an opening door. By the look of the guards, it seems to be a White Lotus location.
  65. 2:00 Someone walks through an active volcanic landscape.
  66. 2:01 Varrick's face, a gust is blowing. Several tubes in the background, no idea on what they are. Maybe batteries or something related to his inventions.
  67. 2:02 Kai is flying with the suit, and airbends against a truck.
  68. 2:02 - 2:04 That weird zooming move from the Spirit World happens to Korra in the Spirit World.
  69. 2:04 - 2:13 Show title appears against the Zaofu symbol and the premiere date appears below.
  70. 2:14 - 2:18 Banged up Earth Kingdom Korra holds up a flame and says "I can't believe it. Toph?"
