Instead of writing long comments on each of the character's pages, I figured it would be simpler to put my thoughts, theories, and speculations about the various characters in Legend of Korra and their relationships to each other. Remember, this is just my opinion. If you disagree, feel free to say so and I would love to listen to your opinions also, provided you stay civil. I sectioned this by character. So, without further ado (I really, really love that word), here's the product of me procrastinating about doing schoolwork. (UPDATE: The schoolwork is done!)
I look forward to seeing Mako meeting Asami. Their conflicting childhoods (Mako growing up on the streets and taking care of Bolin, and Asami being the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, and therefor most likely having any of her needs met) will make it interesting to see how they act towards each other. Though we know pretty much nothing about Asami's personality, I could see Mako being a tad resentful of Asami at first; especially if he percieves her as interrupting his "tightly controlled world", or thinks Asami is acting spoiled. (Even if she is not, and Mako just misinterprets her words or actions)
The same could be said, with much more evidence, of Korra; who has been said to make his world more chaotic. If she was to end up on his pro-bending team along with his brother (I believe this is a likely possibility due to the trailers released), I could see him getting frustrated at her very easily if she tried to slack off or joke around. (Not to say Korra would necessarily do that always, but I could see her being more easygoing than Mako.) Of course, over time he'll warm up to her.
That said, I suspect Mako might have similiar problems getting his brother, Bolin, to focus. If Mako is the serious one, and Bolin is the more easygoing, funny one, they will certainly have their differences. But both are linked, both by family bonds and by growing up on the streets with no one but each other. (That is, we don't know anyone else they have to rely on at this point.)
Speaking of Bolin, I am curious if we will be given an explanation on how Bolin and Mako ended up on the streets. I wonder if Mako has any idea of this, or any memories of his parentrs. Perhaps they were orphans or abandoned? I hope we will be given some flashbacks of Mako and Bolin growing up on the streets.
Now, on to another theory. Mako is trying to win the pro-bending jackpot, a goal he is "intensely focused" on. If he is indeed desparate for money, as someone who badly wanted to win the jackpot could be, I could easily see someone trying to bribe him, in exchange for him getting information on/sabotaging/attacking Korra. That's not to say he would do it, but I could see that being a major plot point/struggle for Mako's character.
I hate to say it, but I had to include it here: I believe, whether the characters end up together in the end or not, there will be at least some minor shipping between Korra and Mako. Yes, I know what I said above about Korra and Mako's relationship seems to contradict this, but I was really only focusing on the beginnings of their relationship, when they first meet. Now, I'm not saying I'm shipping Makorra or whatever its called, but Bolin's character profile makes me wonder if it was coincidence or shipping that these two sentences were put next to each other: "Despite their tough childhood, Bolin always has a smile on his face and a lady on his arm. In fact, it was Bolin who was responsible for introducing Mako to Korra." Talking about Bolin's status as a lady's man, and then discussing Mako and Korra's "relationship" does make it seem a little odd.
There's no information about how the two will act together to my knowledge. I expect how Bolin acts will depend on Asami's personality, which is currently unkown. I can guess as to what type of situations could happen, but I'll save that for the theory section, okay?
I think the two will get along well. Why would Bolin introduce her to Mako if he didn't like her? (No, I don't mean like as in SHIPPING!) I'm just saying that you wouldn't waste the time introducing someone you disliked to your brother. There'd be no point. That said, I'm guessing Bolin will occasionally make a few jokes at Korra's expense that she won't like. I'm sure they'll argue a little, at least until Korra realizes he means well when he cracks a joke.
After being taken care of by his brother his whole life, I'm guessing Bolin will love and respect him. I don't think Bolin would make a serious decision without at least a little input from Mako. I'm sure there will be times when he doesn't listen to Mako, but I don't think Bolin would be the secretive type.
Lin Beifong Edit
Once again, there's pretty much no info about how they'll get along. Look in the theory section.
I've heard some people say he's the new Sokka, but I don't believe in doing that. Yes, I think he will be used for comic relief, but the creators will (in my opinion) focus on his serious side as well.
I'm guessing Mako and Bolin needed a waterbender for their pro-bending team, and Bolin met Korra, discovered she was a waterbender, and introduced her to Mako. Korra kept the fact that she was the Avatar from them (This would be before the press release or whatever she had in the new trailer), until during Pro-bending practice/competition she uses fire (my top guess) earth, or even air; revealing her identity. This would explain Bolin's shocked face in one of the trailers when he exclaims that "She's the avatar!"
As Bolin "Always has a lady on his arm", I have a theory of Bolin crushing on Asami, at least a bit. I mean, I have to admit that the character drawing of Asami made it pretty clear that Asami would be thought of as beautiful by the male characters in the show.
I think Bolin, while not doing anything really criminal, will manage to do something to get Lin Beifong angry at him. Not seriously "you're under arrest" angry, but just a little mad. I also think that Mako will keep Bolin from getting in trouble.
I think I have already described her relationship with them, so see the sections above for information.
Hmm.. There could possibly be some jealousy, if Asami began to take up some attention. This would really only work if Korra had already developed affections for Mako/Bolin/any character Asami's talking to though. Depending on when Asami is introduced, this is very unlikely. Once again, because nothing has been released about Asami's personality I can't really do any relationships that are strongly supported.
Lin Beifong Edit
Now, Nick has basically said the two will not like each oher, but why? Could it be that Lin knew Aang before he passed away, and seeing Korra is too painful because it makes her remember her mother and her's old friend? Or Lin could simply be still recovering from her mother's death, trying to keep Republic City crime-free, and Korra's disruption is being seen by Lin as a personal affront to Toph's memory?
I look forward to seeing how she acts with Jinora, Meelo, and Ikki. Meelo may frustrate her sometimes, but I can see her acting very affectionate towards them all. They are pretty much family after all.
I think Korra's headstrong nature will be a serious problem when trying to deal with the Equalists. Her anger could cause her bending to suffer or become less controllable, especially if she uses fire. Because of this, she could be easier to defeat. Or, if Korra did lose control and damage buildings/goods, the equalists could use it as an example for why bending should be stopped.
I think Korra will have some difficulty understanding the more spiritual aspects of airbending. But, learning to be calmer and less headstrong wil be crucial if she is to defeat the equalists and Amon, fo reasons state above.
I wonder where Korra will stay in Republic City? I'm guessing with Tenzin, so she'll be more available for training.
Because not much has been revealed about Asami's personality, the relationships section has been skipped.
If Asami ends up developing a crush on someone, depending on how big her role in the series will be it will most likely be on a main character. Because of the show's target audience and current beliefs in society, it will be on a guy. Eliminating from the male characters we know of based on age, the strongest two possible shippings for Asami are currently Mako or Bolin. The results of this depends on at which point the crush developes and Korra's relationships with Mako and Bolin at that point. For example, say Korra had developed feelings for Mako when Asami suddenly did the same. The two would become rivals of sorts, and their relationship would suffer as a result. There are a vast number of different relationships that could play out, and that's assuming that Asami is a friend towards them. It is possible that she is, in fact, against them.
As I have debated with Mysteria Femina in this thread, I think it is possible that Asami is holding an aviator hat in her picture. This would suggest that she could be a pilot, possibly of an airship. If she is the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, then perhaps she could afford to buy an airship of her own. (Although I have no idea what an airship would cost or exactly how much money Asami's father is making.)
The other possibility of course, is that she is holding a motorcycle helmet. This would suggest that she can ride a motorcycle, and also presumably has one. This is signifigant in that Asami woud have a rather fast way of transportation.
Though I don't think any judgement can be passed on this yet, I feel like I have to bring up the possibility of her being an equalist. The argument so far is weak, being a non-bender doesn't neccessarily make her an equalist. However, her character is signifigant enough to cause some information to be leaked, so she probably has a decent role in the equalist movement, though what side she is on cannot yet be decided.
Obviously the ruin Korra was leaving on the streets of Republic street would cause Lin Beifong to dislike Korra, but to view her as "The biggest threat the city had faced in recent times", especially when there are gangs seems a little harsh. In my opinion, there must be an underlying reason for Lin to hate Korra so. Perhaps she feels that Korra can never live up to Aang, or that Korra is not taking her responsibilities seriously?
The "serious" one, I can't think of any direct reason that has been revealed to us for Lin to dislike Mako, unless she dislikes him just because of his association (which is currently friend in my book) with Korra.
Again, I can't think of any reason that she would hate him. Maybe she would get annoyed if he decided to joke around with her, but since he can be serious when he needs to be I don't think that would be a big problem. Unless, once again, she disliked him because he was Korra's friend.
I wonder if they will be friends, seeing as they are both children of members of Team Avatar. It is likely they at least knew each other.
Lin could be desparately trying to fill her mother's
shoes footprints. As I said before, because of this she could view anyone disrupting Republic City's peace as a threat. That's not to say that this attitude is because of Toph's mothering, but rather her reputation.
When Korra comes into his life, it is apparently "turned upside down". If the trailer is any indication, Korra's arrival means plenty of new shocks for him. Always trying to be calm, I can imagine that Korra's fiery attitude will challenge that, especially if she does indeed stay with them. (Which, as for reasons stated above, is likely.) There's also the slight awkwardness of teaching your father's reincarnation to airbend. After 16 years, I wonder how well Tenzin has recovered from his dad's death. Will he expect Korra's personality to be similiar to his father, or realize that she is a completely new person? At least he won't be star-struck to be in the presence of the Avatar, being the son of one.
It has not been said of whether or not Tenzin will know them also. Will he get mad at them if they distract Korra from her training, or will he be friends with them? For that matter, will he even know that Korra is a member of a pro-bending team? There's been no information on how much control Tenzin has over Korra, and I can't imagine Korra not doing something she wants to just because someone tell her she can't.
Once again, I find it highly likely that he knows Lin, as both of them come from members of Team Avatar. If Lin dislikes Korra, his pupil, I find it likely that he will be the mediator between their disagreements with each other.
If the equalists want to extinguish bending one nation at a time, air would be the easiest place to start. The more power the equalists gain, the more danger Tenzin's family and Tenzin himself is in. As calm as he may try to be, if his family is in danger I suspect that peaceful attitude will dissappear. When Tenzin's defending his family, I wouldn't want to be the one trying to hurt them.
As I think I've said before, I think that Korra will struggle with the spiritual part of being the Avatar. Maybe we will get a more in-depth view of the Spirit World when Tenzin attempts to teach Korra about it.
