This story details the tale of Shinn Fey, set in the Avatar World a whopping 918 years before the first arrival of Sozin's Comet. In this story, the next avatar is born into the Fire Nation, and they have the same system as the Air Nomads in determining who it is. Pick the same four toys out of a thousand, and you are the next reincarnation. Out of sheer luck, the Fire Lord's son is falsely chosen, and thus Shinn Fey's status is hidden from the world.
Years later, the Prince's tutor, Xu Ki, reveals to the Fire Lord that his son is not actually the Fire Lord. To prevent his nation's humiliation at chosing the wrong person, Xu Ki is sent to kill Shinn. He arrives at his family's farm and kills Shinn's parents, badly wounding him in the process. With no family and no home, Shinn becomes a drifter, coasting from town to town and steadily becoming more powerful at firebending.
Shinn finally moves to the Earth Kingdom and meets a girl named Luia while defending her from local thugs. After being invited to her farm, Xu Ki shows up, and while defending her he discovers he can earthbend and that he is the real Avatar.
Overall, this intriguing story has a well thought out plot, creative characters, and exhilerating action and fights. A worthwhile story for any Avatar fan.
