Hey there, Mageddon725 here, reviewing Colours by Fruipit on behalf of the Fanon Review Squad.

Colours is yet another of Fruipit’s excellent one-shots, and seeing as that is the case, I’ve decided to review this category of fanons differently than I usually do. I trust that this method will be a tad more succinct.

But I digress. Colours focuses on a midnight conversation between the last Airbender and the Blind Bandit. It is a beautiful piece where Aang is asked by Toph what color is.

The Good: Fruipit is an incredible storyteller, and it shows in more than just her writing here. This one-shot captures an emotional depth between two characters that we don’t see in the show, and yet it is done with incredible finesse. If you asked me to write a story where someone has to describe color to a blind person, it would be the most boring thing on the planet. Not so here.

The Bad: I hesitate to use the word ‘bad’ to describe someone’s work or a portion of it most of the time, but it seems like the only word I can use for this portion of the review. (Side note: If anyone has any ideas, let me know!) The only flaw I noticed in this piece was at the end. Fruipit does enjoy taking subtle liberties with characters—what fanon writer doesn’t?—this time, however, she had Toph do something (which I won’t spoil) that I felt was out of character when all was said and done.

The Verdict: Colours is packed with raw emotion and beautiful description, with only one minor issue ever appearing. I enjoyed reading from start to finish, and I’m certain that anyone who is a fan of our resident Toph-lover (besides, Toph’s Fanboy, of course) will love this one, as well.
