At this time, the status of a possible sequel is not clear, with little to no information recently released by the studios, producers, and the cast and crew. This has lead to speculations that it may be cancelled, delayed, sold off to another studio, has been secretly greenlit, etc., etc.. In lieu of any confirmation, the entries below itemized news that may support or rule out any of the speculated scenarios. Most of the cast and crew including Shyamalan are contracted to return for the sequels if optioned by Paramount. However, they may not be able work on the sequels while working on another major film project or going on a summer tour.

  • 4 July 2010: Paramount's reboot of Nickelodeon Movies will start with The Last Airbender, followed by Rango in March 4 2011, then followed by Michael Bay's reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). [1] The TMNT franchise was purchased by Nickelodeon back in Oct 2009, with a new animated TV series slated to premiere in 2012, as well as a new movie with Paramount Pictures.[2]
  • 5 July 2010: The film The Last Airbender had earned $53.2 million for the four-day period, $70.5 million including Thursday sales, distributor Paramount Pictures said. The Viacom Inc. unit had hoped for a $50 million-plus opening over the five days.[3]
  • 6 July 2010: Shyamalan also indicated in an MTV interview that the second film will be "darker" and the Kyoshi Warriors will likely play a larger role[4].
  • 21 July 2010: According to the Wall Street Journal, Paramount is watching the film’s international grosses before making firm plans about any follow-ups[5], as Nickelodeon officially greenlights Avatar: Legend of Korra. Domestic gross on that day stood at $118,191,718[6].
  • 9 August 2010: Nicola Peltz said she will be starring with Rathbone's Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson, in Unbound Captive to be filmed in 2011; this may impact her filming schedule for TLA2. She will be playing as Rachel, Pattinson's on-screen sister.[7]
  • 10 August 2010: Frank Marshall told LOVEFiLM that they have a script for the sequel and hoped to do good business internationally as they did in the states, and get to go ahead "by the end summer"[8].
  • 1 September 2010: Frank Marshall dismissed as a rumor the $280 million figure for combined production and marketing budget for the first movie[9].
  • 3 September 2010: When MTV asked if the $250 million and growing box office for "The Last Airbender" means we'll see "Book 2", Shyamalan said "I don't [know], because there are so many factors they take into account... I guess it will get into an area where it becomes a discussion — like pros and cons... Should we make 'Transformers 8?' — that kind of conversation."[10]
  • 30 September 2010: Olivia Wilde tweeted that Cowboys and Aliens (2011) has wrapped up[11], so Noah Ringer schedule is freed up.
  • 1 October 2010: "The Eye of the Hurricane", another movie with Nicola Peltz, was scheduled to filmed on 11 October 2010[12]. The filming has since wrapped[13] and moved into post-production[14]. A trailer is available on youtube [15].
  • 10 October 2010: At the New York Comic Con, M. Night Shyamalan made his first Comic Con appearance of any kind, in Unbreakable: Ten Years Later panel. He discussed ideas for Unbreakable 2 that have never come to fruition, but made no mention of The Last Airbender 2. [16]
  • 12 October 2010: Knight Gambit asked Frank Marshall via twitter "@LeDoctor According to @IMDB The Last Airbender Trilogy has been canceled? Is this true?"[17], to which he responded "@KnightGambit No, it has not been canceled. Where do you see that?"[18]
  • 20 October 2010: Shyamalan has been reported set to direct One Thousand A.E. with Overbrook[19], a production company Will Smith runs with Lassiter, Ken Stovitz and Jada Pinkett Smith. Paramount has the option to have Shyamalan direct the Last Airbender sequels with their "three movie" contract with him. It is understood that, if Paramount does not exercise this option or let it expire, One Thousand A.E. will be fast-tracked for Shyamalan to direct immediately.
  • November 5 2010: RobPattzNews retweeted a report from prodweek: "Production sched for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn", filming begins Mon, November 8, 2010 wraps photography April 22, 2011"[20]. This may impact Jackson Rathbone's filming schedule for TLA2.
  • November 14 2010: A LAF member, pedro124 asked Paramount Brazil via twitter about the sequel[21]. Paramount Brazil responded "@PedroHeinrich_ Só saberemos no início de Fevereiro"[22]. English translation: "@PedroHeinrich_ We will only know at the beginning of February".
  • January 14 2011: MTV inquired Shyamalan about his upcoming film One Thousand A.E.[23], which has Jade Smith set to star (and potentially other Smith family members). When asked if he plans to do the film in 3D, he said "You know what, I'm thinking not... but I do have an idea for something kind of technically interesting."
  • January 21 2011: Frank Marshall posted on his Twitter that "There are no updates on INDIANA JONES or LAST AIRBENDER ..."[24]
  • January 31 2011: Viacom Inc. requested USPTO for a six-month extension to file "Statement of Use" with the allowed trademark THE LAST AIRBENDER[25], stating that it "...has a continued bona fide intention to use or use through the applicant's related company or licensee the mark in commerce on or in connection with all of the goods and/or services listed..."
  • March 8 2011: Christopher John Farley from WSJ asked Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko if they heard anything about the sequel to the live-action movie; DiMartino said "Uh, no. It’s definitely not up to us, so."[26], as they were discussing the new series The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra due out mid-2012 on Nickelodeon.
  • March 15 2011: As of this date, according to MTV, there is "only four weeks left of filming for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn"[27].
  • April 4 2011: President of Columbia Pictures announced that Jaden Smith is set to star opposite his father, Will Smith, for director M. Night Shyamalan in an untitled sci-fi adventure, originally called One Thousand A.E.. [28]
  • April 11 2011: Jackson Rathbone's band 100 Monkeys will go on a tour this summer, 41 cities from June 28 (Cincinnati, OH) to August 28 (San Diego, CA)[29]. The 100 Monkeys official website also listed April 30 (Las Vegas, NV), May 7 (New York City, NY), and May 21 (Los Angeles, CA) [30].
  • April 16, 2011: Regarding the international tour dates (which are being scheduled for to fall and winter[31]), the band posted "Due to some unforeseen scheduling conflicts, as you already know, we aren’t able to make it out there for the summer, something we are extremely sad about"[32]
  • April 27 2011: Jackson Rathbone tweeted "Picture wrapped last night on Breaking Dawn parts 1&2"[33].
  • April 28 2011: Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman was to comment on the strategy around CG animated films given the success of the latest Nickelodeon movie, Rango. He said, "As far as animation, we are pleased with our first entry there. We are looking to develop our animated business with the Nickelodeon movie brand. We have some opportunities with some of the franchises that we already have on Nickelodeon's slot, and we're looking for original story ideas."[34][35].
  • May 12 2011: Jackson Rathbone and Erika Christensen are set to star in a film adaptation of The Idiot [36], which will be shot in Los Angeles this September [37].
  • May 21 2011: Frank Marshall posted on his Twitter that "There is no news on Indy 5..."[38]
  • June 14 2011: Noah Ringer will be at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 for the premiere of Cowboys & Aliens on July 23, 2011[39].
  • June 23 2011: Frank Marshall posted on his Twitter that "Packing for the big move to the Big Apple to start BOURNE LEGACY. Jeez, I got a lot of stuff..."[40]
  • June 27 2011: Frank Marshall posted on his Twitter that "Attending first production meeting for BOURNE LEGACY..."[41]
  • June 28 2011: Jackson Rathbone's band 100 Monkeys summer tour begins today until August 28[30]. The shooting of Shyamalan's sci-fi feature with Will Smith has been pushed back from September 2011 to January 2012[42][43]. (Note that Will Smith's MiB III wrapped up July 1, 2011)
  • June 29 2011: Executive producers Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino may be hosting a panel on The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra in the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con 2011[44].
  • July 9 2011: San Diego Comic-Con schedule for Saturday July 23 has been released[45]: executive producers Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino will provide a sneak peek to The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra from 4pm to 5pm. Also, Avatar: The Last Airbender Fan Gathering will be held earlier from 11am to 12pm. Note that Cowboys and Aliens premiere is on the same day at 8pm, which Noah Ringer will be attending, with the red carpet ceremony at 7pm[46]. In other news, Shyamalan took part in a photo-op (taken by Sheri Lowen at Universal Orlando Resort) in Ollivanders Wand Shop at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, prior to the international release of Harry Potter 7 part 2 in July 13 2011.   • July 23 2011: At the San Diego Comic-con, executive producers Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino hosted the Korra panel and others but offered no information on the sequel for The Last Airbender film. Noah Ringer attended the red carpet premiere for Cowboys & Aliens; the 13-year old told TheWrap journalist that he's ready to take a break after working on two major motion pictures in the last few years, "I’m just gonna be a normal kid, have a great summer and see what happens from there" [49]
  • July 25 2011: Will Smith came to Costa Rica and visited places like Arenal Volcano with an entourage of approximately 20 people, including M. Night Shyamalan, apparently scouting a location for an upcoming film[50][51] (although other media reports believe this was a visit to look at vacation property[52]). Executive secretary of the Arenal Volcano Foundation, Diego Quesada, said he accompanied the actor through the volcano's slopes about half an hour, and talked to both Will Smith and M. Night Shyamalan.[50]
  • July 29 2011: Shyamalan returned to New York to host a fundraiser, “Make your Mark On The World”. Cowboys and Aliens released.
  • Aug 11 2011: Will Smith and son Jaden, who starred in "The Karate Kid" remake, were in the area (of Philladelphia) meeting with director M. Night Shyamalan. The day before, Shyamalan was spotted location-scouting at the old 3M Factory in Bristol, where he shot "Lady in the Water" in 2005. [53]
  • Aug 23 2011: Andrew Lesnie, the cinematographer for The Last Airbender, has been shooting Peter Jackson's The Hobbit in 3D at 48 fps. For the second block of filming, Jackson's spokesman said that filming had resumed and would continue until December. [54]
  • September 7 2011: Columbia Pictures committed the release date for Shyamalan's untitled sci-fi flick to June 7, 2013[55][56].
  • September 8 2011: Shyamalan’s will begin production on his next film in early 2012, entitled "After Earth". 50% of the filming will take place at the new Sun Center Studios in Delaware County (Chester Township). Other locations will be in Costa Rica, Utah and Northern California.[57]
  • September 27 2011: M. Night Shyamalan visited Valley Forge Military Academy. According to his assistant, Lisa Liberati, Shyamalan was on campus doing researching for a new movie he is working on called “After Earth”. Liberati said that in the movie Jaden Smith will play a military cadet in the future.[58]
  • October 28 2011: Kennedy/Marshall production company has left Sony Pictures and is negotiating a first-look deal with DreamWorks, reuniting the husband-and-wife team with their longtime associates, Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks CEO Stacey Snider.[59]
  • November 2 2011: Aasif Mandvi discussed his villain turn as Zhao in the film "The Last Airbender." [60]
  • November 5 2011: Shyamalan arrived in Houston on Saturday in route to Costa Rica to shoot a movie starring Will Smith. His flight was grounded there due to technical issues so he chartered a flight for the next morning and decided to hit the town for sake and monkfish liver specials at Sushi Raku in Midtown where he dined with his production staff. [61]
  • November 8 2011: Asked what he would change in The Last Airbender, Jackson Rathbone said he would like to see a little bit more comedy with the Sokka character that he played.[62]
  • November 10 2011: Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said, during his company's quarterly earnings call, that Paramount Pictures is "developing ideas for Paranormal Activity 4" and a fourth Transformers movie. He also said that a Star Trek sequel could hit theaters in 2013. [63] On the same call, COO Tom Dooley reported that Paramount is developing a Nickelodeon-branded live-action movie based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, and starting in 2014, Paramount released 1 CGI animated franchise per year through our recently launched animation division headed by David Stainton. [64] In other news, Stephen Gaghan has completed a polish of Sony Pictures and Overbrook Entertainment's futuristic sci-fi pic "One Thousand A.E.," which will be directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The movie shooting date has been pushed back to February 2012. [65]
  • November 11 2011: WME has signed to represent M. Night Shyamalan. Previously, he had been repped by CAA. [66]
  • November 12 2011: M.Night and Bhavna Shyamalan hosted a fundraiser event in Los Angeles at the Manny Silverman Gallery: an exhibition of photography to benefit The Samburu Project, a Santa Monica based non-profit organization.[67][68]
  • November 14 2011: Wharton Leadership Lectures from University of Pennsylvania will present M. Night Shyamalan on November 17, 4:30PM. The press release noted that his most recent film “The Last Airbender,” was an adaptation of the Nickelodeon series and Shyamalan’s first foray into family entertainment and met with huge success worldwide.[69]
  • November 17 2011: M. Night Shyamalan visited University of Pennsylvania as part of the Wharton Leadership Lecture series, sharing his experiences in the film industry and philanthropic sector. The lecture consisted of two question-and-answer sessions, with the first led by a student moderator and the second consisting of questions from the audience. He apparently did not offer any new information on his current film work. [70]
  • December 4 2011: Kathleen Kennedy indicated a script for Tintin 2 that that is being worked on may be completed in February or March (2012). If the motion capture in the summer, then they will be on track to have Tintin 2 on either Christmas 2014 or summer 2015. [71]
  • January 31 2012: Dev Patel's co-start of The Exotic Marigold Hotel film, Tena Desae, said that "Dev has done a brilliant job in Slumdog Millionaire and even though The Last Airbender didn't work for him, his work keeps surprising people in the West. He is a bit selective in his roles too." [72]
  • Feb 14 2012: Jonathan Liebesman is in final negotiations to helm the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie at Paramount. [73] The live-action adaptation is produced by Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Paramount has been developing a new live-action take on the TMNT property since 2009, when it purchased global rights to the brand for $60 million with the goal of producing a feature for its Nickelodeon Movies label and a new animated TV series in 2012.
  • Feb 20 2012: While promoting his latest low-budget movie, Dev Patel said to Cover Media, "The great thing is I did a really big budget once and it was absolutely crap, it was called The Last Airbender. And it was not very good at all. That, you very so small in the process, you feel so diluted because… and I can’t really put it down to any one person in particular apart from that when you’re on these big budget movies it becomes this machine and it’s hard, especially not being a big name in a movie like that you don’t really have a lot of weight."[74]
  • Feb 23 2012: Dev Patel said of the movie, "On paper, it looked the most amazing project. It was a big CGI film. I was 18. I did martial arts for eight years. But what I realised so quickly is how small you are in the process of making one of those movies. I kind of got lost in the chaos."[75]
  • Feb 26 2012: Dev Patel described to Empire magazine his time playing the lead in M. Night Shyamalan's flop film 'The Last Airbender as "horrendous"' and said "Working on something that big and trying to get heard as an actor is tricky. You feel so diluted and worthless. I would happily shape my career doing great low-budget indies. I'm not that hero-type dude, so I'm never going to be playing the handsome lead character." [76]
  • Feb 28 2012: Viacom's Paramount Pictures will release a SpongeBob SquarePants movie in late 2014, to start off its new animation effort. [77] Paramount had announced last July the formation of its new animation unit with a target of one release starting in 2014. The new Spongebob movie was in the pipeline under the Nickelodeon Movies label - it is not clear if it will be solely under Paramount Animation label.
  • May 3 2012: Shyamalan's movie After Earth has wrapped filming.[78]
  • May 5 2012: James Cameron won't work any movies other Avatar and his documentaries.[79]
  • May 31 2012: eOne to distribute Eye of the Hurricane starring Nicola Peltz.[80]
