"I'm sorry things got so messed up between us, but whatever happens today, I want you to know how much I care about you."
— Mako to Asami during their "break up"
Per last week's suggestions, I decided to go with Masami this week. I'm not much of a fan of this ship but I'll try to be as polite as possible. After all, I don't want to just write about ships that I like.

Masami

This ship immediately set sail once Asami was introduced. It was leaked and many shipped it as an alternative to Makorra. However, Makorra already had a huge fanbase (especially after the leaked kiss) so many also hated the pairing and hated Asami for interfering with the pairing. A lot fans also suspected that Asami might be an Equalist. They were not entirely wrong for thinking this (as it was originally the plan) but it turned out that only her father was an Equalist. A lot of fans also thought that Mako cheated on Asami when he kissed Korra back and were happy when they finally broke up. The majority of the fanbase considered Masami to be dead and it declined in popularity until their brief relapse in Book 2. The popularity of Masami resurfaced at this point but a lot of fans were pissed at Bryke for bringing this pairing back. The Masami relationship was over for good by the end of Book 2 but there are still some diehard shippers of it to this day.

I never liked Masami. I quickly boarded the Makorra ship even though I was reluctant to. I just couldn't help it when I saw the leaked kiss and I was understandably confused when Mako ended up with Asami. I found it to be even more crazy when Mako returned Korra's kiss and I did think he was kind of a jerk with the way that he talked to Asami when she confronted him on the kiss. While many felt that their break up was ambiguous, I honestly interpreted Asami's threat of not having a relationship to discuss in the future as a break up. I was even more annoyed when they briefly rekindled their romance in Book 2 and I was happy to see them be done for good by Book 3.

Pros

  • They mostly seem to have a mutual understanding and respect for each other, except for their obvious relationship issues.
  • Mako and Asami are very good friends for life, even after their permanent break up.

Cons

  • They had major trust and communication issues regarding Mako's feelings for Korra.
  • They broke up for good. Asami is now with Korra, making this relationship impossible.

So what are your thoughts on Masami? Please feel free to comment and thank you for reading this. While it is okay to compare other ships, please try to keep discussion centered around Masami. Also, let me know what you would like to see next.
