The promising (gettit?) new comic series, the Search, started off rather well and then ended with perhaps the worst surprise the Avatar universe has dumped on me.
The thought that Ozai might not be Zuko's father is awful. Frankly, I despise this 'twist'.
It makes it seem like evil or otherwise, immoral behaviou, is inherent. Sozin to Azulon, Azulon to Ozai and Ozai to poor Azula. Zuko was supposed to change that. He's supposed to be the physical spawn, the genetic child of a man who could be classically defined as 'evil' but who managed to defy his family's legacy and change the world for the better. By making him Ikem's biological son it ruins that. It just makes Sozin's line look that much worse. It defies the everything we believe when we consider nature vs nurture. Azula is Ozai's daughter and thus has to be 'evil', but Zuko may not be so he's inherently good inside. It's horrible thinking. Completely disregards maturity and the essence of Zuko's character.
And he was meant to be from the bloodline of Roku and Sozin, the Avatar and the Firelord who changed history and shaped what the story today is. Ikem being his biological father makes the bloodlines not joined in fact, which removes the point of conflict that we all witnessed when we saw Zuko struggle between traditional 'good' and traditional/stereotyped 'evil'. The fact that he was descended from the man who started the war and yet at the same time from the Avatar lineage made him special and made that internal conflict real.
And I think this damages Ursa as well. She clearly treated Zuko better than Azula, I mean, she even said "What is wrong with that child?". Not once did we see her treat Azula like she did Zuko. She said goodbye to Zuko, not to her own daughter. Why? Because she's the daughter of Ozai, who she hated despite him being a decent husband and father at the time. It makes her come across so much worse. I don't care what that stupid mirage said, it's clearly the delusional ravings of Azula's mind. We can't trust that, for all we know Ursa treated Azula in an inferior manner to her son with Ikem despite being her mother.
And this would sever Zuko's biological relationship with Iroh. I know blood isn't everything, but it takes away from Zuko defying his 'father's' legacy and instead seeking the legacy and teachings of his 'uncle'.
Of course, this is if Ikem is indeed Zuko's father, and unfortunately, I think it's likely, why else would she look at Zuko and see Ikem? Of course, Zuko seemed to take a lot after his father.
All in all, if Ikem is Zuko's biological father, I will not consider this canon at all. It would damage a great character. I don't blame Nickelodeon for not making this, if this is what they pitched. They were clearly smart enough to know how terrible it would come across as. Bad writing, and it's a shame, because the comic was brilliant until the end.
