Review: The Crossroads of Destiny

Book 2 left us fans hanging with the unforgettable, epic, cliffhanger episode,
Aang struck
The Crossroads of Destiny. This episode was the last we saw of Avatar before the long, boring nine month hiatus leading up to the premiere of Book 3. I have to say that this is one of the series' best (in my opinion).

Azula is plotting a coup to overthrow the Earth King and seize control of Ba Sing Se. Aang, Sokka, and Toph return from their adventures to Ba Sing Se because Aang had a vision of Katara being in trouble. Katara (who actually is in trouble) is captured by Azula and her two friends, Mai and Ty lee. Disguised as Kyoshi Warriors, Azula and her friends manage to get important information from The Earth King. Zuko then has to make an important decision in the catacombs of Old Ba Sing Se: Good or Bad.

Opinions on Plot:

I think that the plot in this episode (in fact in the whole series, especially Book 2) is amazing! The fact that Azula and her friends could get into Ba Sing Se so easily while most of the fire nation couldn't even destroy the wall is incredible. The episode has great character development especially Zuko and the fight at the end is awesome! The decision Zuko chose shocked many fans including me, which is one of the very few reasons that this episode isn't the most favorite.

Characters Analysis:

Aang – Aang having to choose between Katara and the Avatar State was a huge decision. (One of the reasons this episode was called The Crossroads of Destiny) He finally choose the Avatar State to save Ba Sing Se, Katara, and the rest of the gang. But unfortunately, Azula took advantage of Aang not compete mastering the Avatar State by striking him down with a bolt of lightning. Katara used the water from the spirit oasis to save him, leaving him unconscious but still alive.

Overall Grade: 9 out of 10 – I wasn't happy by the way Aang fought in the catacombs. He just kept getting tossed around. Not his best fight, but his development was still great!

Katara – Katara learned more about Zuko in this episode. She learned that he wasn't just a bad guy, but that he had feelings and that he was really confused (As mentioned by her in The Western Air Temple).

She was about to attempt healing his scar when Aang blew crystals out and walked in on them. As Katara walked away with Aang, she turned back at Zuko and gave a sad look. She realized that she had been treating him as a person without feelings. Unfortunately, Katara had to fight Zuko after he made his shocking decision. This eventually lead to her not believing that Zuko could actually change (The Western Air Temple, The Southern Raiders).

Overall Grade: 10 out of 10 – Katara was awesome in this episode! She fought well in the last part of the episode which showed that she definitely improved as a waterbender.

Sokka – He and Toph went to warn the Earth King of the upcoming coup. After getting to the palace, they realized that they were too late; the coup had already started. In the Earth King's main room, they find that Mai and Ty lee have secretly disguised themselves as the Kyoshi Warriors. Sokka, Toph, The Earth King along with his pet bear, Bosco get thrown into jail.

Overall: 9 out of 10 – Sokka didn't appear to much in the episode, but he was still as funny as ever!

Toph – Toph didn't appear much also. She did, as mentioned above try to warn The Earth King of the coup. But she did play some very important roles including getting Aang and Sokka to trust Iroh, finding where the crystal catacombs of Old Ba Sing Se were, and getting her, Sokka, and The Earth King out of jail.

Overall: 8.5 out of 10 – Toph should have appeared more but she did help a lot.

Zuko – Zuko had to make the decision between good and bad (hence the name 'The Crossroads of Destiny). He ended up deciding evil but near the end of the episode, he looks at his Uncle Iroh as he is captured by the Dai Li. Uncle looks at him in disappointment, leaving Zuko confused at the very end of the episode.

Overall: 10 out of 10 – He had great character development! Even though he chose the wrong side, I feel that this was very critical, seeing as he was still confused at the end. Later when he chooses good, (The Day of Black Sun: The Eclipse) he is now certain of what is real destiny is.

Azula – This episode showed how evil Azula is. She manipulated people (Zuko, Long Feng, etc..) and this episode showed some more of her fighting skills. The best villain (in my opinion) just got better, even though she killed my favorite character, Aang.

Overall: 10 out of 10 – Azula is evil!

Iroh – This episode showed more of Uncle's fighting abilities, just like in Book 1's finale. He helped the gang but got imprisoned because of it. This was needed (I hate to say) because it showed Zuko that he betrayed his uncle, who was more of a father to him than Ozai (The Eclipse). Uncle looks at Zuko in disappointed at his decision.

Overall: 10 out 10 – Uncle helped the gang and started to make Zuko feel like he made the wrong decision.

Mai and Ty Lee (I put the two together because they both appeared at the same time and at the same amount of time) As mentioned, they didn't appear much. They were only in The Earth King's palace the whole episode. At first, they were disguised as Kyoshi Warriors, and then they were (at least Ty Lee was) playing with a bear.

Overall: 7 out of 10 – I don't blame the creators or anyone for this. It's just that they didn't do much and they didn't have any development.

Overall Episode Grade: 10 out of 10 - A great way to end the season!

Plot: 10 out of 10 - Awesome plot, as stated above.

Characters: 9 out of 10 (See Character Analysis^)

Music: 10 out of 10 - The music in this show is always epic! This probably won't change in any reviews. No, this won't change in any of my reviews.

Great Episode! Next time, I'll be reviewing The Headband. (Thanks to Skybender101 for the idea.)
