Plot
Edit
Asami is currently in Republic City, traveling with Avatar Korra, Mako, Bolin, Sifu Tenzin and his three children. After a day of dodging Equalists, they all settle down. Having just met Asami, the Avatar and Airbending Master ask about her. She reveals some details about herself, which will set the stage for the rest of this fanon.
Republic City, nightfall
Edit
"That was a close call today," Korra said, visibly exhausted from the fleeing of the Equalists. "Tenzin, good call on the tornado to throw them back."
"Well, I had to do something. They were right on our tail. This is something I will have to teach you tomorrow," the elder Airbending master turned to her.
"How about my fireballs making that guy in his little car run like a baby?" Mako bragged about his ability.
"You always have to get the last word in, Mako," Korra said, slightly rolling her eyes.
"Daddy, can we practice our bending over there in the field?" Meelo tugged on his father's leg.
"Sure, son. Just make sure you and your sisters stay where I can see you," he said to him.
"Thanks Daddy. Ikki! Jinora! Come here!" With that, Tenzin's son and daughters faded into the open field.
"Anyhow, so...new girl, who are you?" Korra set her eyes on the young female Waterbender they just met.
"My name is Asami. I'm a Waterbender, and I'm from the Northern Water Tribe, Avatar. It is a pleasure to meet you," Asami spoke slowly and nervously, being in the presence of the most important person in the world.
"You can just call me Korra. I really don't mind. I'm kind of sick of people just calling me Avatar, if you want my opinion. This is my Airbending trainer, Tenzin," Korra turned to Tenzin, introducing him.
"Pleased to meet you, Tenzin. You're the previous Avatar's child, are you not?" Asami asked.
"That is correct, Asami. I am one of three children whom was born of the late Avatar Aang and Sifu Katara," he explained to her. "My three children are also Airbenders. Sadly, my wife, Pema, was taken away from me six years ago by the Equalists."
"I'm truly sorry, Tenzin. I have had my run-ins with the Equalists before; they nearly took my father. It was part of what's already been a tough 15 years for me," Asami became upset and started to tear up a little.
"Everything okay, Asami?" Korra requested of her.
"Well, it's a long story, Korra," Asami answered.
Recollections
Edit
"It began up North, fifteen years ago." Asami was now a voice-over as the flashback played out before her eyes, her mind processing the images she had recalled in her life. "My Dad was a Waterbender, but my Mom wasn't. When I was just four years old, I discovered my ability to Waterbend. It wasn't clear, but I think I was fighting with my brother when it happened."
Asami could picture a scene from when she was just eight years old. "I remember the day the Water Tribes suffered a great loss. I was playing with my little sister, and then I heard that the Southern Chief, Sokka, had passed away. It was a sad day for the Water Tribes."
"I was born at the South, so I can recall it, too," Korra began to speak. "His death seemed so sudden; he was quite healthy from what I had heard. It was a day of mourning for us, considering all he represented."
"So, for the next few days, the Northern Tribe did its best to honor Sokka, and pay respects to the Southern Tribe. It was kind of quiet in the city. Sokka was a great hero, as I'm sure you and Tenzin knew."
"Yes. My mother, after all, was his sister. I came back to the South Pole the day after he died. She was really upset about it. Her family seemed to be collapsing around her in recent years," Tenzin recalled. "I attended his funeral. Very sad day."
Asami resumed her flashbacks. "Anyhow, after that, when I was twelve, I took my first trip to the South Pole. That's when I met Katara, your mother, Tenzin. She was still great to talk to, seemingly in good spirits. She gave me a lot of good advice; what it had meant to love, and what it was like to train as a Waterbender. She even showed me a couple of moves that she still could perform. She, in a way, became like my grandmother. We exchanged a couple of messages after I left. Sadly, she died only a year later."
"Sifu Katara was a very brave, courageous woman. I learned a little under her in my early years, before she retired about three years before her death. She helped make me into the person I am today," Korra took in some happiness in her memories, however, she knew it was Asami's time to speak.
"About a year ago was one of the hardest moments of my life. The Equalists attacked the North Pole in a surprise attack one night. When I woke up, I found out that my father wasn't there. He was out fighting them. The battle took until the late morning hours. We staved off the revolt, and my Dad returned safely. However, that's when I found out that my best friend had been captured. Kaina...she was like a sister to me, so that hurt. Then, even worse, I found out my boyfriend was killed trying to defend the city. I didn't sleep at all that night. I was devastated. I don't know if Kaina's here or not," she said as tears started flowing down her face.
Korra's tough personality faded, if only for that moment, to comfort her new friend. She placed her hand on Asami's shoulder. "You'll see her again, trust me."
"Thanks, Korra."
"So...how did you wind up captured, then?" Bolin questioned her.
"Well, Bolin...my memory is kind of foggy. However, here is what I remember. I was only supposed to be here on a vacation with my family; we left about three months ago. One night, I was practicing my Waterbending along the shores, and one of the Equalists spotted me. He tried to block my chi but I bended some Water up at him."
"You're a Waterbender as well, Asami?" Korra asked.
"Yes, Korra, I told you this," Asami reminded her.
"Ooh, I forgot...wow, my bad," Korra held her hand to her palm in her failure to remember what Asami said earlier.
"Anyhow, I found myself suddenly running into a masked man. I don't remember much of him, I think his name started with an A...regardless, he disabled my chi, and I hit the ground. Next thing I knew I was waking up in some hold for benders at their headquarters. I don't know where my family is, if they're still here, if they went back to the North Pole...whatever. My time in prison was hard. The next thing I prefer to remember is you all finding this holding cell and breaking me free. I can't thank you all enough for helping me escape that nightmare..."
"Don't mention it, Asami, it's all in a day's work for us," Mako said.
"We're glad you could join us, Asami," Tenzin added.
"I don't mind teaching you a couple of Waterbending moves," Korra smiled at her.
"We're all in this together now," Bolin further improved on the sentiments.
Asami hugged her new friends. She was ready to take on the world.
Asami's closure
Edit
That's just not all to it...there's a lot more...you will see more about me in the chapters ahead...you will know...my story.
Author's notes
Edit
Had to rewrite this a couple times due to releases of new info at SDCC on 23 July.
Not my best work...it's only a prologue, though.
"Asami's Closure" is actually a hint for how all the chapters from here on out will start, with a little note from "Asami" herself, if you will. ^^"
Originally, this was to be set at the would-be end setting of this fanon. However, this is likely no longer the case as I think things through...there may be a couple chapters beyond this point.
