Trolley

One of Republic City's trolleys stops at Kwong's Cuisine.

A trolley is a mode of rail-based transportation that is commonly powered by electricity and operates with a single car. Trolleys are widely used across many of Republic City's boroughs and also operate underground, where the Equalists once used them for their own illegal purposes, such as weapons trafficking.

History[]

Trolleys are commonplace in Republic City. Above ground, they are in use as a means of cheap public transportation. Underground, a different type of trolley was used by the Equalists, and its existence was kept a secret from the rest of the city for a long period of time.

Mako regularly rode a trolley to commute from his home at the Pro-bending Arena to the Republic City power plant, where he was employed. One day, while running to catch the trolley after finishing his shift, he was accidentally hit by a moped. Despite being angered by the incident, he was happy to accept a date requested by the driver, Asami Sato. That night, Mako ate dinner with her at Kwong's Cuisine, which was located near a trolley line.[1]

Tram

Asami piloted a hijacked tram through the Republic City underground in search of Korra.

While searching for Avatar Korra in the underground Equalist headquarters, Team Avatar secretly boarded a tram and rode it into a prison, where they thought Korra was being held captive. However, they failed to find her and were forced to flee the headquarters. They once again boarded the tram and left for the exit but were pursued by several Equalists in a tram behind them. Bolin used earthbending to create a barrier to block their pursuers. Noticing the exit was heavily guarded, Lin Beifong bent a hole in the ceiling and used the collapsed overhead tramway rail as a ramp to launch their tram upward into another tunnel, allowing them to escape.[2]

Known types[]

Trolley at the power plant

A streetcar has a stop near the Republic City power plant.

  • Streetcar - Used at street level in downtown Republic City, and has stops near Central City Station, the Republic City power plant, and Kwong's Cuisine. The stops are open-air and small, with enough seats for only a few passengers waiting to board the streetcar. Streetcars are box-shaped and have several windows to let in light, as well as an open-air portion; both sections have bench seating. The cars are most commonly painted in a yellowish-green, brown, and cream livery. Since they function at street level, these trolleys do occasionally interfere with vehicle traffic. Like trains, they run on tracks and wheels and are powered by electricity channeled through overhead cables. Trolley poles contact the overhead cables to draw electricity to power the streetcar's motor.
    • These streetcars bear similarities to the old California cars with additional Asian architectural elements.
  • Tram - Found in the tunnels beneath Republic City and formerly operated by the Equalists. The cars feature a large headlight on the front and rear. Only a single tramway line runs in each tunnel. The tram cars are divided into two halves; one side carries cargo, while the other has passenger seating with the control cab situated between the two halves. Unlike streetcars, these trams utilize one rail built on the tunnel floor as well as a rail attached to the tunnel ceiling with one connection between the tram and the overhead rail; fitted to the cab roof of each tram.[2]
    • These trams bear similarities with some of the vehicles used for some of the subway lines of the U.S. Capitol subway system in Washington, D.C.
