Toucan-Puffin
From Avatar Wiki
A Toucan-Puffin is a small, fish-eating bird common on the outer islands of the Fire Nation. While mostly black-feathered, they have a white belly and a blue breast, with white spots around the eyes. Their most distinctive feature, however, is their large, colorful beak banded in red with a black tip. Toucan-Puffins are known to be extremely friendly, and while they have the ability to fly, they rarely use this ability, preferring to spend most of the day sleeping or hunting for food on the ground. They can commonly be seen on rocks in coastal areas, usually near the caverns where Cave-Hoppers, their primary food source, reside. Sokka, mentioning to the group that they are in enemy territory, calls a group of toucan-puffins "enemy birds".
Toucan-Puffins are first seen in "The Headband."
[edit] Connection
Toucan-puffins are based on two different types of birds: toucans (the beak) and puffins (the body). Puffins are sea birds in the auk family. They have black and white plumage with brightly colored beaks during breeding season. Their wings are adapted for swimming, and they feed primarily by diving for fish and zooplankton. Toucans are arboreal tropical birds with enormous colorful beaks. Toucans eat mostly fruit but will occasionally eat insects and small lizards.
