  • I know that they told us that their parents were killed by a firebender, and Mako witnessed it, but what if San actually survived and later became a criminal for some reason and renamed himself Ghazan? Maybe for vengeance? When Mako and Bolin are prisioners of the Red Lotus, Ghazan is surprisingly friendly with them and even plays 'two truths and a lie' one involving his moustache, which is indeed there in the only picture of his father we see.

Why didn't they recognize him? Well, Ghazan does seem damaged by 13 years of prison by wrinkles and weathered face, and his long hair and mustache gave him a different look, even comparing Ghazan to the old picture they kind of have the large chin in common

Why didn't he recognize them? Well, he hasn't seen them since they were little kids, and trying to forget the past he left behind. But maybe the reason that he is so nice with them is actually because they remind him of the sons he left behind to follow Zaheer not knowing it was actually them.

And finally, the lava bending. It is earth bending with a fire component, fit for a man who loved a firebending woman and had a firebending son. And since lavabending is so exceptional, maybe Bolin's ability is hereditary just like blood bending while it's not full moon. This would give Ghazan a backstory and it gives a very deep meaning to the scenes where he interacts with Bolin and Mako, especially their final confrontation.

    What do you think?

It happened "right in front of" them, he should be able to tell if one of them weren't really dead. It's also mathematically impossible, because it happened when he was 8, he's 19 in Book 3, & Ghazan has been in prison for 13 years at the start of Book 3.

Why didn't they recognize him? Well, Ghazan does seem damaged by 13 years of prison by wrinkles and weathered face, and his long hair and mustache gave him a different look, even comparing Ghazan to the old picture they kind of have the large chin in common

Ghazan's chin is almost nose length, while San's is noticeably shorter. They also have a different nose shape, chin shape, & eye shape (San's point down at the outer corners, Ghazan's point up). Barring extensive plastic surgery, there's no way these 2 could be the same guy.

Why didn't he recognize them? Well, he hasn't seen them since they were little kids, and trying to forget the past he left behind.

Setting aside the fact that we can clearly recognize them in photograph, he would know their names.

But maybe the reason that he is so nice with them is actually because they remind him of the sons he left behind to follow Zaheer not knowing it was actually them.

Ghazan's just a chill guy in general. P'li's the quiet one, Ming-Hua's the angry one, Zaheer's the serious one, & Ghazan's the laid back one.

This would give Ghazan a backstory and it gives a very deep meaning to the scenes where he interacts with Bolin and Mako, especially their final confrontation.

Forcing a connection between 2 characters does not automatically create meaning, something has to be DONE with it. Retconning Ghazan into San would add nothing to the story, because it never comes up, it would just make a confusing mess of the existing backstory.

    • Well, keeps being just a theory then. I thought Mako was older in the in Book 1, something like 26 or 27, just 19 years old?

    • It's more of a disproven hypothesis. He's actually 18 in Book 1, that was supposed to say Book 3. The Wiki is a fantastic resource for fact checking all sorts of things about the Avatarverse. .

    • Yes I see, in the wiki page about Mako it really says he is 18 in Book 1. A lot younger than I expected. Learned something new today. I just though he was older because he was playing in a pro bending team which seems quite a serious thing in their world.

    • san was a fire bender, not an eartbender so that is not true, but that could have been very interesting.

    • Wasn't his mom a firebender? Mako and Bolin's mom I mean.

    • the scarf is red and it is from his father so...

    • and even if the father is earthbender that still doesn't make any sense

    • Because it's a theory.

    • ok... so my opinion is that it can't be true, but it would have been interesting if it was true

    • San was Earth Kingdom.  The red scarf was likely a gift from Naoki.  There's no word on whether or not either of them was a bender.

Furthermore: San effectively looked like an older version of Bolin, complete with button nose.  Ghazan had a considerably longer and narrower overall facial structure, especially in the jaw area.  Additionally, if we calculate for Ghazan being sun-seamed from his time on the barge, San doesn't look much younger in the photo than Ghazan did in Book 3.  Considering how that side of the Ferret Fam seem to age, he'd likely have at least gone gray if he'd lived that long; Ghazan's hair was a glossy warm black with no apparent gray at all.  (On an only tangentially related note: Zaheer—despite being gray and craggy—is apparently canonically not significantly older than the other three members of the Red Lotus inner circle.)
