Wonderfull exteriors, let's hope the stories are just as good.
17.
8 named characters, 9 generic characters.
Is it just me or does Asami's face look kind of… off in the cover?
It looks more pointed, that's why. The cover looks cleaner in overall, compared to the previous two covers.
Eh, respectfully disagree. I think that the second one is the cleanest, and the characters look great and it does an excellent job of capturing the mood. In the third one, it's complicated and parts of it look cool, but Asami looks significantly off model, and Bolin's face looks under-detailed. It just seems unpolished in comparison to the previous ones.
Gonna be honest, I don't really like the covers. They're pretty generic, I don't feel they give me an enticing taste at what's inside, & I think they do a disservice to the contents. If I had to pick one I'd say is my favorite, probably the 3rd, but not by much. It looks like more thought was put into its composition than Part 2 (which is truly lazy & uninspired), & it seems more likely to reflect the contents & mood than Part 1's cover did, since it fell into the usual Avatarverse Comic Part 1 trap of being a generic cover of the main cast posing happily, which is (also usual) nothing like what happens in the comic itself.
I really don't like the majority washed out orange color scheme, & I think literally hanging the villain over the characters is overdone by this point. Having him be in the portal is kind of a twist, but it's still a kind of shot I've seen a lot in anime anyway. I don't understand if the characters are supposed to be divided by the portal or united behind Korra, & I think the ambiguity is unintentional, or at least poorly communicated, since Bolin's expression is also totally incongruous with everyone else's serious, often angry, & vaguely somber mood. The inclusion of effects in an Avatarverse cover is always a questionable decision; I don't like the way the portal itself is drawn, though the beam coming from it is alright. It also feels like the water just came out of nowhere, also that it & the earth are on the wrong sides. Huge boulders are usually depicted in the show as being punched or kicked, & waterbending rarely as being used with a fist. The fire actually looks pretty nice for a change, but the air just looks like scribbles.
In fairness, the Avatar comics are about 50/50 on whether a cover will be a dud or something pretty nice, & there have only been 3 Legend of Korra comic covers so far, which isn't much to compare from. But just because the Avatar comics aren't necessarily better isn't an excuse. Unfortunately, I don't see the covers going through a huge improvement, since basically the only reason these are being made is because they have a built-in audience, & therefore there's no incentive to innovate the cover art.
I like all of the covers so far for Turf Wars. In general, I'm content about them too, just not really pleased with the cover for the library edition of N&S because it looks too crammed with the Gaang squeezed into the center and Zuko's.. questionable stance and Aang in the background.. jumping into the air in what should be like a fighting pose or something. Not too happy with the composition there and also not with the cast they have chosen. It's the library edition which combines all three parts and I don't really see the point of having Team Avatar on the cover, least of all Zuko since he doesn't play a big role which could also be said for Aang and Toph. I'd rather have Hakoda and Malina, maybe even Gilak, on the cover than Aang, Zuko and Toph.
Yeah, I like that one too. Also like the cover of the library edition of The Promise and for The Rift Part One, mostly because of the colors here. I also kind of agree on your point that the covers sometimes don't really give the needed insight into the plot and can be alluding therefore, but I guess I kind of see where they come from.
I constantly switch between thinking condescendingly about how much time you people put into thinking about the quality of comic-covers, and desperately wishing I could care so much about something like this.
I just look at those covers and think "Oooh, pretty drawing!" and that's it.
