  • The Seasons of the year in the Avatar World are quite the same as on our earth. The whole climate zones seem to be adapted from our world like the position of the desert or the tropical climate in the fire nation, which lies around the equator.

But there are a few things which I don't understand: It seems as the whole Avatar World has the same definition of Summer and Winter Solstice, just like in our world. The southern hemisphere on the earth calls it the Summer Solstice, even though it is in winter there. We call Summer Solstice Summer Solstice, because it is the start of the Summer of the NORTHERN hemisphere. And in the Avatar World?

Sozin's Comet was said to arrive at the end of summer. But do they mean the summer for the southern hemisphere? Because we know that Book 1 in ATLA plays around the Winter Solstice, as the two episodes are called so. When they arrive in Omashu (which lies in the SH) a few weeks before, we can see snow lying around. So we can assume that in the SH there is Winter during the Winter Solstice, which is called so around their whole world. That would mean that in the NH there is Summer meanwhile. What confirms this theory is that in Book 2 Appa is losing his hair due to the climate which is getting warmer (when they fly through the SH). So during this time, there is Spring in the SH, which would fit. And in the end of Book 3 there should be the end of Summer in the SH, which fits perfectly, too. And all these examples are just like the Wiki describes it in the History Timeline. So what's the problem? The problem is: Why do they take the seasons of the SH as worldwide general reference points instead of the NH? The SH has never been as important as the NH. Ba Sing Se lies in the NH, that's the most important. And also the Northern Water Tribe, which had been the only Water Tribe for quite a while and has been more important than the Southern Tribe since today, as I think. The Fire Nation shouldn't really care about this as they don't really have seasons due to their position around the equator and the Air Nomads... well, I don't think they had that much influence on the other nations, and even if, they lie quite symmetrical, unless the Southern Temple is much more important as the others - but that's more or less meaningless.

    So what do you think?

    • There was a question in an interview a long time ago asking if their world is round or flat. Mike asked why they thought it might be flat, & the interviewer pointed out that a round planet should have different seasons in different hemispheres, but that's not what the show suggests. Mike's & Bryan's response indicates they either forgot to take this into account or genuinely didn't know.

But they did make Seasons, because Appa is losing his hair in "The Chase" what means that Spring is coming.
