Why do they give the characters Japanese-sounding names, anyway? Is it because they are running out of names that sound Chinese or have to do with actual Chinese naming customs?

No I don't. Â The creators use multiple sources for the language, architecture, culture etc. While the names are mostly chinese they also use japanese, korean, inuit, mongolian, sanskrit, tibetan and made-up names. Kyoshi Island is based on Japan so why wouldn't they use japanese names?
Just curious. @DaiLiAgent
