  • Everyone knows what Varrick is like, but is he smart or just mad? Another thing that just annoys me is when it seems as if Varrick is going to say something romantic to Zhu Li but he doesn't. Are all those because he becomes nervous or is it because it is not the right moment or is he just being a Varrick?

    • Varricks a smart guy, he just didn't realize his feelings for Zhu Li and took her for granted, he seems to become nervous, but he covers it up well...

    • Hmmm...a little bit of both, in my opinion. He's clearly a genius, but in my opinion he's still off his rocker in spite of that. As for his apparent obliviousness to Zhu Li, well I'd just put that down to him being less-than-mature emotionally.

    • There's a fine line between genius and insanity. It takes nonlinear thinking and trying new things that run the risk of "failing". He's eccentric, and that ties into it all.

    • Yeah, you're probably right.

    • He's the Eccentric Genius Trope. But he's only productive for about 15 minutes out of each day, around noon.

    • Much as I don't really like the character...he's smart as hell.  It's just that—as others have pointed out, albeit in less blunt terms—he also happens to be a kook.

So to summarize: the answer is "both of the above."

    • Who knows, Varrick should be enougfh smart of the advantage tha tthe cnema could mean, i think that his adventures od nuktuk were his try to be something similar to disney.

    • I guess I never gave this thread a serious answer, but since it's been revived again, I'm going to say that I don't see any evidence that his behavior is anything more than eccentricity.

    • Honestly, I can related to Varrick in so many levels: pretty smart (I have high school grades, not to brag), and crazy ideas.

I feel like Varrick and I share a lot in common in ways of thinking (my personality is NOTHING like his though), so I'm gonna go, like Neo said, with "eccentric genius".

    • There is no genius without at least a tiny drop of insanity. Some obscure disorder helps, too, high functioning autism or something.

    • Insane genius maybe?

    • Mad genius, brilliant madman, insane genius... That's a pointless quarrel over terminology, whereas we have established as general consens that Varrick is gay and European, that is to say, very smart and crazy, at the same time.

I…actually am in the autism spectrum O_o

    • So am I.

The big question is: Is Varrick?

We should probably rename the threat to "Is Varrick an autist?". I'm going to look in the internet.

Edit: According to this webpage autism's symptoms are:

      1. Lack of social interactions and Communications (Varrick seems pretty social to me, at least in hi first appearance)
      2. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior and interests (Varrick seemed to have a certain pattern of behavior, like "crazy idea-do the thing-acclaim himself", but don't trust me I might be wrong)

    • If we narrow the question down to wether Varric is autistic, other theories or speculations would no longer apply to the topic. For example, many people with a very high IQ are mistaken for autistic because high intelligence alone can cause some of the struggles autists deal with, as well. The fact that many autists have a high IQ doesn't help.

    • Let's just leave it at what Bumi is: a mad genius

The thing with social interactions is a much debated one. I, myself, tend to talk alot about things that interest me and I am very well-phrased, at least according to the psychologist that diagnosed me. However, I do struggle with actual social interaction, as in "emotional bonding". For example, Varrick is very talkative and loves to communicate, but he is rather oblivious about the feelings of the people around him, leading to the tension between him and Zhu Li. Because Varrick is very good at arguements and logical thinking, but he lacks emotional and social intelligence.

And Varrick has repeatedly alluded to his various routines that he seems to care about.

Wasn't trying to start a quarrel over terminology (and I don't need a lecture on that)....was just stating my opinion that I agreed with it is all...

I'm just hoping he uses his crazy genius to help Zhu Li win the president election
