  • If Bumi is older than Kya, how come she looks older? I mean, her hair is totally gray and you can see wrinkles and age lines when she makes certain facial expressions. Bumi on the other hand, has no gray hair and looks rather youthful by comparison. He could pass for maybe forty when both he and Kya should be what, close to sixty maybe? What gives?

    • Aang, Katara, and their children

Tenzin is born in 119 AG, and given the photograph of the family when Tenzin was a baby, I would guess that Kya is 3 years old and Bumi is 8 years old. That means that Kya is born in 116 AG (58 years old in Book 4) and Bumi in 111 AG (63 years old in Book 4).

    • I wish they would just list the ages of people on their pages. Then you wouldn't have to guess it.

    • When the age of the character is known, it is listed. If there's no age listed, which is unfortunately the case for a lot of characters, that is because we do not know what their age is. We can speculate, but that is still not gonna be posted because the wiki only includes information with a verifiable source - be it the comics, art books, w/e.

Believe me, I wish we knew the ages of all these folks too.

Funny, I always thought Bumi was born in 113 AG.

    • Bumi looks a little older than that, maybe around 10.

    • He looks about 10 in that picture but he still grew up with Tenzin and had a rivalry with him, which implies the were closer to the same age.

    • I think that in that photograph it's:

      • Tenzin: 1 year (55 years in B4)
      • Kya: 5 years (59 years in B4)
      • Bumi: 13 years (67 years in B4)

Following my hypothesis (which doesn't need to be true, it's just my opinion), Aang and Katara would have married one or two years before 107 AG, in which Bumi was born, so that would mean Aang and Katara had Bumi with 20 and 22 years old respectively.

pretty plausible, except for the fact that Tenzin would barely remember growing up with Bumi.

    • I wonder how old Tenzin will be when all his kids are grown?

Depending, if Jinora is 44, Ikki 41, Meelo 39 and Rohan 33, Tenzin would be 85, it's just maths for that kind of stuff, the ages are at their profiles.

    • Kya was originally planned to be the oldest of Aang and Katara's children. For some reason her design didn't change when her and Bumi's ages got switched.

    • I imagine Bumi as born mid to late 111 AG ( same year as Izumi) and Kya in 116 AG. It is quite strange that Bumi doesn't have more grey hair, but it could be dyed. I imagine Kya's wandering a around the world may have been exhilarating to the point of terror and stress sometimes, so that explains it, I think. So yeah, PietPie1 seems pretty accurate.

    • If I recall correctly, there was an old version of the family tree that posited Bumi as the middle child and Kya as the oldest.  Then, Book 2 happened, and it was the other way around.  I almost wonder if they hadn't originally meant for Kya to be the oldest, got the basics of their character designs figured out...and then, decided to change it after the fact for some unknown reason.

Could explain why Kya is completely gray, at least.  (Bumi actually does have age lines; but he's not gray at all and I'd think he and Tenzin were closer to the same age if I didn't know better.)

    • I always figured that Bumi and Kya were 63 and 56 respectively in Book 2.

I can see Aang wanting kids young, but at 20?! Bumi does not look that old. 23-24 sounds reasonable to me, and, given context, 27-28 for Zuko.

Well, Tenzin did say that Kya "flitted around the world" for years, so maybe she did a lot of hard partying, etc. in her youth and maybe even through to her middle ages. Hard paryting and activities often assoiciated with it can be known to age a person a little faster, depending of how heavy one does these things.

A lot of men look younger than they actually are.

    • I get that. It's the 'Aang would have been 20' thing that throws it off for me.

    • Not much of a retaliation, hmm? Even Aang wouldn't want children that young.

Aang would've been 21 and Katara, 23. Besides, they were in a relationship since their early teens so it stands to reason that they would marry young. And what makes you think Aang wouldn't want to start a family as soon as he could?
