  • As we know that Toph could detect one lying, she couldnot detect Katara lying about Appa being sick. That is totally strange! And there  was ground below them when she lied so Toph should have known that she was lying.

Another thing. What did Aang eat for food? We know that he is a vegetarian. Where did he get his food? Or maybe I think he had, for survival, started eating non veg?

    • Katara said that she thought Appa was sick, not stated that he was sick. And regardless, it wasn't necessarily Toph's disposition to point out every lie she detected.

    • I don't think that is a good answer but maybe she said that she thought that appa was sick this one makes sense.

    • Air Nomads are STRICTLY vegetarian. No meat.  Aang probably stole fruit and veggies from local markets, or could differentiate between good berries and bad berries.

    • It could be that Toph was tired, as seen when she rubs her eyes. Also, Toph does not suspect Katara of lying and is not prepared to listen to the earth.

About the second question, I agree with Boomubbles.

    • Aang probally ate fruits tubers nuts, berries, possibly eggs if he could get them at a market same with rice, noodles etc. I can't think of one non air- nomad who didn't eat meat safe for avatar Wan . Maybe the sun warriors didn't but I'm not sure

    • I would be very shocked if the sun warriors did not eat meat.

Though on that note, I think it'd probably be easier for him to scrounge up vegetables, fruits, & eggs (which we know he eats, because egg custard) than for the rest of the Gaang to hunt.

But I don't think they had to do that often, as we know they went to markets. Though it's not really clear how they obtained money. Donations? I suppose they could have stolen from the Fire Nation soldiers. That money would at least be usable within the colonies.

    • Katara didn't want to receive donations once, but i think thye did anyway. And seeing their mindset of "stealing from pirates is okay", i can see them doing that.

Your probaly right about sun warriors considering their Aztec based. Anyway King bumi supplied them for the first half of book one. After that I'm not too sure.

I don't think aang would eat wild eggs because he would have to disturb the mother plus the eggs would be fertile so it would be considered killing at that point. I think he only ate farmed / market eggs where it's clear that the eggs are unfertilized and the mother wasn't attached to them because their never going to be alive.

    • The sun warriors seemed like a vegetarian culture.

    • Also remember that Toph's ability to detect whether one is lying or not isn't infallible.

In the case of Katara, it may be that Toph simply didn't care what Katara's reasons were in that particular instance. Though TBH, it's been quite some time since I watched ATLA so I don't remember the details of that particular incident.

It is infallible on Katara though. But i think Toph not caring is the best answer.

    • I watched the episode again and again and the way conversation went it made me think that it really isn't right to say that "Toph didn't care" or "Toph didn't suspect because katara thought so".

I think Katara was good at lying in this episode.  Hadn't Azula lied to Toph during "The day of black sun" episode by saying "I am a 600ft platypus bear with.....blah blah". And Toph said, "Alright, I admit it you are good at it."?

Maybe, Katara was so moved to help the poor people that she lied and thought that she lied for purpose of good and thus there wasn't any nervous physical reaction body or trigger of a chemical reaction in the brain.

    • It seems simpler to me to just suggest that Toph didn't bother to check.

    • I wonder how often Toph just plays along when she clearly knows a lie from the truth, especially when she gets to watch someone shoot theirself in the foot.

        Loading editor
    • She just woke up, she might've sensed it but was too groggy to think much of it.

        Loading editor
    • So all of you guys think that Katara cannot be a good liar? She has shown inevitable talent in every aspect. Her waterbending breaks the limit when she is preoccupied with anger or saving someone so dear to her. I feel Katara lied without revealing she was lying.

        Loading editor
    • Possibly. But I doubt it. She might be slightly better above average of lying, but I think it was mostly my aforementioned theory of her grogginess interfering with her perceptions.

    • Katara has tried lying at other times & wasn't very good at it. She's not really that great with controlling her emotional expression in general. Also, fooling Toph's ability goes beyond simply having a good poker face. It's not something I'd assume when there are other options that are less of a stretch.

    • hey wait. Say Katara wore some special shoes that insulate her heart beats to seismic sense? Just saying.

        Loading editor
    • Noshewasnot.

        Loading editor
    • Then try to find some reason to prove how she could lie?

        Loading editor
    • She lied in the episode The Painted Lady, in which she lied about Appa being ill so the Gaang wouldn't leave while there was a dilapidated, polluted Lake-Town with plenty of sick people nearby, so Katara wanted to stay so she could help heal them, contrary to Sokka's rather meticulous schedule leading up to the invasion.

    • I guess I'm a little late to the party, but the reason Toph did not call out Katara's lie was because she did not check. Katara was not above Toph's threshold of lie detection as evidenced in Lake Laogai - "He was not my boyfriend" "I can tell you're lying". And even then, Katara was not technically lying since she and Jet never really dated, but she did have a pretty big crush on him. That being said, Toph's Seismic Sense was good enough to detect lies that were even technically not lies, just deliberate misleadings of information, unless the subject in question thought they were telling the truth - "They both think they're telling the truth" (Lake Laogai), or if they were extraordinarily good liars - "Okay, you are a pretty good liar" (The Day of the Invasion, Part 2). However, in order to detect lies, a user of Seismic Sense (such as Toph) must consciously search out lies. Therefore, they need to have reason to believe the subject is lying, and Toph did not, and she was also tired as she had just woken up, so she didn't check.

    • That's all pretty agreeable, but I feel like pointing out that nothing is stopping Toph from lying, so her statement about Katara & Jet should be taken with a grain of salt.

I mean, everyone knows by now that truthseers can still lie, right? I think she was just trolling Katara.
