UPDATE: The live Q&A with co-creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, has just ended! Big thank you to them for giving us this opportunity and thank you to everyone who joined in on submitting questions for this! Please continue supporting Bryke and the LoK team, Korranation!

If you don't want to scroll through this looong thread to get to their answers, we've written a recap blog for you to read through here!

    • Why at one D: I'm gonna miss them :( But still, it's awesome that they are gonna take a look at the wiki. I've always asked myself if they had actually seen this place before. I wonder if they'll tell us some names that "haven't been confirmed by official sources".

    • Ok, my question is, is there anything Avatar related happening after Korra ends? I know this probably won't be asked because of contractual obligations, but is there anything after Korra at all? Comics, new avatar, video games, it doesn't matter. I don't expect Bryke to say anything specifically, but a simple "Yes" or "No" will suffice for me. I can't believe this is happening! It is so awesome that I get to, maybe, ask Bryke a question!

EDIT: So, I just realized this question was already answered by Mike and Bryan in an interview...

"Have there been any talks with Dark Horse about continuing ‘The Legend of Korra’ in comics, like you’ve done with the Aang gang? MDM: That’s always a possibility. They’re still mainly focused on Avatar Aang, and Zuko, and those characters, so there’s a few more volumes of stories coming out. But certainly if people keep reading those, I’m sure there’ll be some discussions about doing Korra ones too, I imagine. BK: Yeah, but there’s two additional full arcs of ‘Avatar’ coming up, with Gene Yang and Gurihiru doing the art, and us overseeing. There’s a lot going on in the comics, but nothing for Korra yet. Personally for me, when we finish the series, it’s done. it’s cool that people are still interested and wanna keep catching up with the characters, but I don’t want to think about it right now."

    • Within the avatar world mythos, what is the relationship between the lion-turtles and the bending "animals" (badger-moles, dragons and air-bison)? Were these animals given bending by the lion turtles or were they initially indowed with these powers? Do lion-turtles perform bending themselves (we never saw them use bending but rather give it away to others)?

A good portion of the power comes from Raava, but she's also the tether that connects all the past Avatars to the current one. So basically any knowledge or techniques they get boosted by Raava's power. But that's just my theory.

He blocked their chi in a similar way the damage from Azula's lightning blocked Aang's. Accept he blocked a higher chi point to prevent bending.

    • Can the avatar bend all fout elements without Raava present. In Beginnings, this seemed to be the case as Raava had to pass through Wan to switch the elements for him. However, we see Korra air bending into the tree of time with Tenzin, after Raava was destroyed.

    • Introducing Kuvira in such a blatant way in the finale of book 3 (her actually saying her name in a close-up shot of her that seemed to last an eternity) is very much unlike the usual Bryke storytelling prowess. Was this intentional? It certainly made everyone say that Kuvira was the big bad the next day. This is what makes me think that Kuvira is a red herring. If she is why would they say so? Also it's similar to how they introduced Azula into the series all the way back in the Storm.

    • Hey guys!

So I guess my question is, what has happened to the Equalists and their supporters ever since the death of Amon? I hate to say it, but Amon made some really good points about benders (ones that Korra proved herself) before he got P'Li'd. Are there still believers out there, practicing chi blocking in hidden basements? And I know this is far more than one question, but did Ty Lee have anything to do with teaching them the art of chi blocking?

      Thanks!

    • One thing that I never understood is how exactly the Avatar Spirit reincarnates. I know that Raava reincarnates as the next person right before the person is born, but does that person already have a living soul before this happens? Does Raava then merge with that already existing soul right he or she is born, like she did with Wan's soul when they started the Avatar cycle? I know that some fans would think that the answer is no, but in the instances that we've seen with other unborn babies, like Hope and Rohan, the characters talk as if the baby is already alive before he or she is born. So I would like to know your perspective on this so to dispel any confusion and end any debates on this.

    • QUESTION: Ever since I've learned of the Avatar Cycle in the first chapter of Book Two: Earth, The Avatar State, I've wondered if you guys are willing to finish the Avatar Cycle? You have Aang (Air) and Korra (Water). Why not keep going? You guys have created a UNIVERSE. The ideas can never run out if you have a universe in your hands. Personally, I want to see the Avatar Cycle finished as to see 2 more Avatars before packing it up.

    • Why did you make Amon a waterbender? Since none of the primary antagonists so far in the Avatar series have been nonbenders and the Equalist's message would have been more effective if it wasn't based on a "lie," wouldn't that have made him a more interesting and challenging foe for Korra to face?

    • Both Avatar and Legend of Korra have done such a great job with representation—race, gender, disability, etc.—and in a lot of ways paved the way for more representation in children's media. But I feel like there's a block on LGBTQIA representation in animation, and I was wondering if you guys feel the same. Do you think you have an obligation to work on this, as leaders in the field, and has there been any discussion of it in the writers' room?

    • This is quite a specific question, so I'll think up a better alternative one later, but is there any connection between what the lion turtle told Aang in the episode Sozin's Comet Part 2:The Old Masters, and what Guru Laghima said about entering the void? The Lion Turtle told Aang that "Since beginning-less time darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purifying light", and Guru Laghima wrote, "Let go of your earthly tether. Enter the void," and so I was wondering if this was a deliberate connection with the use of the word 'void'?

Thanks heaps for this opportunity! :D I've loved this show for so long and I do hope you consider making more after your break from Avatar.

    • Hello Bryke! First of all, God bless you and your amazing creative and writing skills. This show means so much to me and i will never stop being in love with it! My question is: In ATLA, Uncle Iroh is the ever present Jiminy Cricket of the show, imparting his vast wisdom on anyone he meets. However, in Legend of Korra, there seems to be an absence of a constant source of advise. Was that done on purpose as a way to make Korra find her own path as the avatar? (Kind of like how Zuko found his path once he parted ways with uncle)

    • Okay, so, in the brief scenes where we've seen Kuvira engage in combat, particularly when she handled the bandits, a lot of us noticed that Kuvira exclusively fought using metalbending. Not once did we see her bend the earth thrown at her or earthbend to subdue her opponents; she wasn't even touching the ground when she confronted the bandits, something that completely contradicts Toph's own style of remaining connected to the earth. Was there a reason for separating Kuvira from the foundational element? We all know that metal is refined earth and Kuvira's fighting style is more polished, quick, and controlled than traditional earthbending. There is something cold and steely about Kuvira, almost like metal. Was it intentional to develop Kuvira's fighting style to emulate certain characteristics of metal as a sub-element and have her stray from the fundamentals of earthbending?

    • What was the area called for Aang in book 1 when he exclaimed he was in the spirit world?  In Korra, and even later on in A:tla, we see that the spirit world has different terrain and landmarks, even inhabitants, than the material world so was Aang simply in a state of limbo?  Or was it simply too early to expand upon the spirit world at that time so you guys kept it simple at that point in time?  Can spiritual people, such as Iroh, also achieve this state if they wanted to?  And lastly, how does Wan Shi Tong fit into this area?  Is he just an anomaly among beings to where he can exist in both material and spiritual planes simultaneously or is he just a very powerful spirit?

    • Hey Mike and Bryan! My brother and I loved watching the Avatar series since 2005! Would it be possible for an Avatar to reincarnate into another in a different universe at a different time? For example, an Avatar during the French Revolution?

    • My question is about Bumi. His character is so interesting. Growing up in a home with two benders as parents (one considered a fantastic waterbender and the other the Avatar), he probably felt left out, like a dissapointment. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he forged a great life, becoming a leader of people and a peacekeeping force in the world without the ability to bend an element. I think that is admirable, and I love him for it. He also kind of acted as a balance to a generation full of benders since many of the characters in LoK are benders related to characters in AtLA. I was just wondering: Was he always intended to become an airbender, and if so why you gave him the ability in the way you did?

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I loved AtLA when I was younger and LoK is just as amazing. I hope you enjoyed making it as much as I enjoyed watching/reading it!

Sato says that the metal is a very pure metal, meaning it lacks the necessary earthly impurities found in other metals for Earthbenders to manipulate to bend the metal around it.

One thing that I never understood is how exactly the Avatar Spirit reincarnates.

I'd imagine so. Wan and Korra both existed with Raava both before and after fusing/seperating with her.

Legend of Korra has shown us the social, political and economic changes that have occured within every other nation. I would be interested to see how the Fire Nation has restructured its national identity, while doing away with policies of conquest and expansion.

    • Greetings from Russian fans! Did you know that the Russian Avatar Wiki is the second in popularity after the English Avatar Wiki? Our questions:

      • Russian official audio dub of the TLA and LOK contains a lot of mistakes. Therefore, fans' audio dub is more popular in Russia. Why Nickelodeon do not control the quality of translation of the series into other languages?
      • Avatar comics are published in English only. Thus, we use pirated scans of comics from the internet and do their own translation into Russian. What is your personal attitude to the internet pirates? After all, they really help your series and comics for those countries that do not interest Nickelodeon.

    • Hi Bryke!

So my question is about if Korra is going to end up with anyone in the end of Book 4. Or is there no endgame at all and do we have to do it with our imagination? For me personally : Makorra doesn't make sense anymore since they've barely interacted in Book 3 and Mako didn't seem that sad or horrified when he heard that Korra is missing in the last episode... However I think Korrasami would be really great since there was heaps of chemistry in Book 3 and Asami seemed like a real support for Korra. But then again even though I would love for the last thing to happen.. LOK is still being aired on Nick online..  So i doubt if you guys will even go there. :(

I understand that you guys can't answer my question specifically, I honestly wouldn't even want that but I really do hope you guys can tell us if there is an endgame! That would be great.

Thank you so much for this great show!

Who is the past Avatar he fought, and why did they fight? What exactly is the Chaotic Attack? Are we going to see anything related to the game in what's left of Book 4, or it'll be treated like some kind of spinoff?

The Lion Turtles physically & spiritually changed someone to be able to bend an element, then it was passed down from those original peoples. Did Harmonic Convergence awake a spiritual (physic) connection in people who already had a genetic connection or did it change both like the Lion Turtles did. & why just air??

    • My second question: Is there a reason why Katara didn't appear to be at her granddaughter's Airbending Tattoo Ceremony? I realise she lives far away from Republic City but such a minor obstacle surely wouldn't have deterred her. This is the girl who travelled across the world to train as a waterbender, got herself imprisoned to rescue earthbenders and set out to avenge her mother's death at the first sign of an opportunity. Her love of family is what drove this passion, it was the core of her character. What has changed?

    • as far as my questions go, i think they've been mostly covered by others above, but i'll just summarize below:

      1. could you (B&M) talk a little bit about the specific metaphysics of the avatar's reincarnation? we know that korra, aang, wan, kyoshi, etc are all the same soul, but how does raava factor into it all? does she cause the reincarnation? does everyone reincarnate even if they aren't bound to a spirit? (if not, what happens when someone dies?) why does destroying her (raava) also "reboot" the avatar's "hard drive"?

      2. could you also talk about bending abilities? how is it that the lion turtles had to give people bending abilities, but after harmonic convergence, bending seemed to develop somewhat of a genetic component? why are all benders of a certain nation born only with the power of that nation's element? how did the bending animals originally get their bending? are their abilities genetic?

    • here's a question i don't think anyone's asked yet:

Could you talk about the ocean spirit's and moon spirit's role in waterbending? When did waterbenders become dependent on the spirits to power their bending? If the Moon Spirit had never been brought back to life, could waterbenders still eventually learn to bend again? It seems a little far fetched that waterbending is the only element that depends on the continued life of a mortal fish in order to still be bendable. (considering aang and the ocean spirit were still able to waterbend after the moon spirit was taken out, it seems that others would be able to do so as well... perhaps the death of the moon spirit just causes a regular eclipse, and after the eclipse is over, waterbenders can bend again?)

also, does tui exist anymore? we know she (he?) was the original moon spirit, and that yue had some of her life force in her, which she returned, which caused her to become the moon spirit. so has yue totally replaced tui, is she fused with tui, or what?

I ask this because Mako never said anything about still having feelings for Korra, whereas Asami said, “I want you to know that I’m here for you. • In Book 1 Air, Korra fought against Amon, who could take people’s bending away, previously, something only Avatars were able to do. Amon, subsequently, took her bending away. In Book 2, Korra fought against another Avatar, Unalaq, her uncle and Dark Avatar. He ripped Raava out of her, destroying her connections to her past lives. In Book 3, we had the Red Lotus who, like the previous two villains, tried to bring their own idea of balance to the world. They then poisoned Korra and made it impossible for her to do her job as the Avatar for three years.

My question is, how did you guys come up with this reoccurring theme of Korra not being the Avatar and the world, possibly, not needing the Avatar anymore? Last year on tumblr (http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/61619863383/ktempest-bryankonietzko-the-legend-of-korra) it was stated that Unalaq was the chief of both tribes. While it says that the South saw him as little more than a figurehead, officially they had no chief of their own, but rather they were governed by a "Council of Elders".

I thought this was pretty cool, but then came Book 3 wherein Sokka was referred to as a Chief. How does this work, given the above system? Was the Southern Water tribe governed by one Chief, or by a Council? If it's the latter, was calling Sokka "Chief" an unofficial title?

In the Book 2 finale, we see Korra and Tenzin both air bending to get into the Tree of Time after she and Raava have already been separated, and then we see Korra use water bending in her fight with UnaVaatu.  So my question is: does that mean Korra was able to bend all four elements even without her bond to Raava at the time? I was wondering how that worked, since Wan wasn't able to bend all four elements simultaneously until he and Raava had been bonded.

Because she seems genuinely surprised by the idea when Ozai gives her the crown and so he can go be the phoenix king. • Hello and thank you for doing this!

I know you have a habit/history of putting subtle clues and foreshadowing about characters, connections between them, etc. In AtLA we saw that one of the White Lotus Grandmasters had a lot of Lion Turtle statues that foreshadowed the Lion Turtle giving Aang knowledge of Energy Bending. But with what we know now of Beginnings and how the While Lotus has held onto information about the Avatar that has been forgotten to the rest of the world (like knowledge of Raava's existance and Avatar Wan's name which Zaheer referenced and would have little other way of knowing save through his time with the White Lotus before defecting), it stands to reason (imo) that the While Lotus also had ties with the Lion Turtles before the Lion Turtles died out. With this in mind, what significance (if any) does the lotus on the base of Wan and Raava's statue have? Specifically, is it supposed to tie him to the While Lotus the way the lotus at the base of Avatar Aang's statue in Yue Bay does? And if yes, why and how was Wan related to them?

And I know this is supposed to be one question, but I'd really like to know how old Wan was when he died, if possible.

Question: I was wondering what your biggest regrets would be in terms of the story, design, dialouge, etc. in Avatar.

Thank you so, so much for doing this. I won't be able to see the live chat but I hope that i can view it at a later date.

    • When were Rina (daughter of Roku) and (her daughter and mother of Zuko and Azula) Ursa born?

I can only assume that Rina was born before the hundred year war and before her father died, I've always wondered.

      Kind regards, CrimsonEbony

    • What did Amon do between his escape from Yakone and reign over Republic City? How was he officially taking bending away with only waterbending? I'd love confirmation on all that. Amon was a very intriguing man and the fact that he used waterbending to remove bending is a huge deal that was never explained. Was he actually a spiritual man or did he just figure out how to bloodbend the chi paths to be blocked? Thanks guys you're the best.

    • Hi! Big creators of the Avatar Series! What u have done is a magnificent piece of art from the plot to the soundtrack everything! And I know this all must came out of somewhere, because this story is so good that I feel it's true. My question is: Are there some hidden secrets that we must know about? If there are What are they about and Where they are (ATLA or Leyeng of Korra)? Thank u for caring I hope u answer my question. Greetings from Ecuador.

    • How do you work through problems in your plot? Do you deliberate a lot with each other and other people for new ideas, or is there something specific you do to help get past those hang-ups? I don't really mean writer's block, but rather finding trouble getting from point A to Point B within the context of your story/characters.

My question: I follow Brian's tumblr and he posted a lot of avatar-related pictures of arts, cosplays, etc. since a long time. You ever been inspired by one of these? If you did, which manner? Use concrete details or just ispired them like a pale hint? Do you have a fix thing (character, name, place, design, event or something) which was based on the fan's ideas?

    • First, thank you Bryke so much. This is the only show I watch now, so I really appreciate how well you've done it. My question is about Unalaq's spirit water bending technique. how does it work on the spirits and what happens when they turn gold and fade away, are they dead or transported? I really wanted to know how that worked please!

You've talked a lot about giving the overseas animators greater creative infuence over the show, leading to things such as Ryu's foaming mouth guy. Are there any other notable, unexpected changes that were made by animators at studio MIR or during the last airbender? Also, the world needs Peanuts x Fooly Cooly.

    • There's been an increasing movement in American animation towards storyboard-driven series, where episodes are simultaneously written and storyboarded. Korra certainly lends itself better to being a script-driven series, but what are your thoughts on the different methods? If you were to tackle a different genre in the future, what would you be most interested in? (Dear god please PeanutsxFLCL)

    • Nearly every specialized bending technique has more or less been explained (metalbending, seismic sense, bloodbending, healing, lightning, and flight). The only three that still are still rather vague are lavabending, spiritual projection, and combustionbending.

Since others have already asked about the first two, I guess my question is: How exactly does combustionbending work beyond the generic "channel chi through an intricate third-eye tattoo, superheating the surrounding air and producing a beam of explosive energy capable of immense damage"? How does a firebender realize/discovers that they can combustionbend and what is its relation to the third eye tattoo?

    • I don't know if it's too late but I have a question too for the Avatar's esteemed creators:

Can you confirm the presence of the Swamp Tribe in Book 4, since Korra, Toph and tenzin's kid are all known to be at some point in the Foggy Swamp ? And if not, can you tell us more about the Tribe current status in LOK (independent or not, recognized by the other nations or not, modernized like the Southern Tribe with a capital city like New Orleans or still isolated,...) ?

    • So one question per a thread...

Theres quite a number of stuff I want to ask but I guess everyone has ask the trivial stuff...

My questions to Mike and Bryan is... "Have you considered on have someone succeed you in continuing the show/franchise?"

My reason for this question is because the Avatar is the same person but at the same time they are different, like the Doctor from Doctor Who. That show has lasted for 50 years, perhaps one day someone can carry your creation into the future and write stories for Avatars we all wish to see.

Like the Unnamed Lava bending Fire Avatar proceeding Avatar Yang Cheng.

The old short Earth Bender Avatar proceeding the unnamed fire Avatar.

The immediate Successor to Avatar Wan and how the system started and of course the Avatar that defeated Bundun from Legend of Korra Game Book 2.5 Chaos

    • Hi guys,

My question is - Did Aang have a peaceful death or was there more to that story? for Korra to be the avatar, Aang must have passed early - my approximation is he was mid 50s/early 60s when it happened - it makes me sad to know Katara lost him so early. In any case, will we find out more about his life - and in fact, all of the gaangs life in their prime - before the show closes out?

    • Question: Was it difficult to tell a complete story in only 12-14 episodes for the Legend of Korra, compared to over 20 episodes per season in Avatar the Last Airbender? I mean, each season in LOK has been resolved by the end and has had a different "bad guy"  that you had to introduce. In ATLA,  no giant conflict had to be resolved until the end of the third season.

A Long Rant About My Love of Avatar: Oh and there is probably a negative three percent chance y'all will see this, but you are the most spectacularly amazing human beings that have ever walked this Earth. I can't think of anything else I've ever seen that has come close to the awesomeness of the Avatar series. Y'all are brilliant people, who I obviously admire, and no matter what you do after the conclusion of LOK (even if you take a break and disappear from the map for a while) I know we will all see great things from you again. Y'all are the best and I hope you have a wonderful day!
