  • Is Ming-Hua, Ghazan's older sister that raised him? It would explain Ghazan's more fluid earth bending.

    • Based on today's episode when Bolin pokes fun at them

"You were raised by an older sister"

"Your mustache came in when you were 10"

"Im just sensing, an unspoken attraction between you two"

      Ghazan: 2/3 *smiles*

Implying 2 out of 3 of these are correct

-Your mustache coming in when you're 10... theres no other character with an mustache that young but then again, no one else has lavabending

-There cant be an unspoken attraction between them if they are siblings

-Ming-hua has lighter skin, half siblings like Lin and Su maybe applicable

-Ming-huas techniques are brutally whipping water, while Ghazan can use traditional earth bending (when fightign Zuko) and moving his hands towards the Earth to melt it into lava. I dont think she taught him the technique

-Upon the 3rd Ghazan and Ming-Hua look at eachother awkwardly but not angerily, some unspoken attraction likely exists.

Either his mustache didnt come in when he was 10 or he wasnt raised by an older sister. If he was raised by an older sister it wasnt Minghua

    • I guess half-siblings or step siblings is possible.

    • Well, considering the awkward glance that Ghazan and Ming-Hua exchanged, I believe that the unspoken attraction is true... Being rased by an elder sibling is also likelly....However, I doubt that Ghazan's moustache began growing when he was 10...

Also, if Ghazan and Ming-Hua were indeed siblings or half-siblings, wouldn't they have been much more exhuberant at the prospect of being reunited once again? Hence, Ming-Hua's sarcastic remark upon seeing Ghazan again might indicate that she has a secret crush on him, which she is desparate to keep secret (that makes it somewat similar to Toph's hiding of her secret crush on Sokka in ATLA)...

As for Gahzan's unnamed older sister... if that point was true, here's what we can conclude so far---Ghazan and his sister were orphaned at a young age, after which she might have been murdered by some sort of cruel authority figure... This might have induced a devastated Ghazan to develop a new and lethan form of earthbending, and promptly join the Red Lotus. By following through with Zaheer's plan of overthrowing all of the world's authority figures (whom Gahzan now deemed evil), he might view this as a form of revenge for his sister's tragic death... Just a thought!

PS---considering all of his jail tattoos, I assume that Ghazan was imprisoned more than once... He might have come up with lavabending while trying to break out!!

    • Ming-Hua, if anything, looks younger than Ghazan.

And they both squirmed when Bolin implied that they had an "unspoken attraction."  So that's probably one of the details that he got right.

My guess is that 8th Hero of Olympus is probably right about Ghazan's sister—she was his cynicism catalyst, as it were.  (Although the Red Lotus, if anything, have an ideology rooted in unrealistic idealism.)

    • Actually... When Bolin says you were raised by an older sister it seems he's looking at Ming-hua

I'm guessing Ming-hua was like Toph, her family underestimated her due to her physical disability. Unlike Toph Ming's sister watched over her despite Ming-hua is secretly super OP. She got tired of being under her sisters control and joined the Red Lotus to go against this dominance. Being her reason to join Ghazans knew this was correct

As well as mentioned an unspoken attraction between the 2, one does not simply have an mustache at 10 years old

    • I saw Gazhan giving Ming-Hua a hopeful look & Ming-Hua brushing him off. Hence "2 out of 3."

    • Her expression looked more like "you big inked-up lavabending dope, that is most certainly not true or anything."

    • Maybie they dated in the past but left them feeling aqquard around each other. I have this crazy thought that they had a son who is actually Kai. He seems to be the same age as how long they were locked up, it goes that Ming-Hua gave birth in her cell & her guards took him away and put him in an EK orphanage. I know it's far fetched but it's jest a crazy thought.

    • If they were siblings, wouldn't they be revolted by the suggestion that they're attracted to one another?

Not to single you out, but you have many things mixed up and it can be confusing.

"When Bolin says you were raised by an older sister it seems he's looking at Ming-hua"  The camera wasn't looking at Ghazan's face when Bolin mentioned the older sister, so this statement is invalid.

"I'm guessing Ming-hua was like Toph..."  This whole paragraph is aimed at the wrong person, Ming Hua wasn't the one Bolin was talking to, it was Ghazan the whole time.  Nothing was mentioned or hypothesized about Ming Hua having a sister.

      Ghazan = male, earth/lava bender

Ming Hua = female, armless waterbender

As for the third paragraph, you're welcome

    • True. When Bolin was making that story it was directed at Ghazan the whole time.

Also, I think Ming-Hua has a little crush on Ghazan because when Bolin mentions the "unspoken attraction" thing, Ghazan and Ming-Hua look at each other awkwardly, but Ming Hua looks away quickly and Ghazan's face during that was mixture of part hopeful, part "puppy-dog" pleading kind of way (but that's just my thoughts).

Ghazan was definitely into Ming-Hua, based on his reaction; the question is whether or not it was requited.  Personally, I think she was being coy in a very Ming-Hua way.

But as others pointed out, neither's reaction was "eww, no" the way it most likely would have been if they were siblings.

    • I think that Ghazan was just being sarcastic when he said that Bolin got two out of three right. He was implying that it is more likely for him to be raised by his older sister and have a mustache at age ten than for him to have an unspoken attraction for Ming-Hua.

    • Although it is possible that he did have an attraction for Ming-Hua. I guess we will never find out since they are both dead unless the creators say something at this year's comic-con.

    • He didn't sound sarcastic to me; and that look that he shot at her looked vaguely hopeful.  And I'm kinda hoping that we get a backstory/start-of-darkness graphic novel run about those jerkbenders.

    • According to Ghazan's wikia page (http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Ghazan), the moustache came into existence at 10 years old. In which case either Ghazan being raised by a sister or the unspoken attraction is true.

I'm thinking that the unspoken attraction is likely, given that since it's the four of them together most of the time (excluding their imprisonment) and that Zaheer and P'Li are already an item, it could be the case that Ghazan and Ming-Hua would be attracted to the only single person in the group that they see most of the time (ie each other). Not to mention the two of them were like partners in crime as they'd be fighting together in 2v2s (Mako and Bolin vs Ghazan and Ming-Hua (one of which was on P'Li's orders, I know), all confrontations (As well as the brief confrontation of Mako, Bolin and Asami vs Ghazan and Ming-Hua), and Kya and Bumi vs Ghazan and Ming-Hua.

Initially I thought that any non-business related talk (ie kill the world leaders, kill the Avatar, change the world etc) was more sarcasm and small jokes between the group (all but Zaheer who was always pretty serious about the group's goals) such as Ming-Hua being happy to see the two mug-heads, or P'Li calling Ming-Hua out for being a show off for not using the elevator. Even so, I think that some sort of romance between the only people they'd regularly see whilst out on their business trips is likely, since there was never really anything else to suggest that Ghazan had an older sibling.

    • I don't know why the mustache thing is listed as canon on his page; it was a joke when Michael said it, and he and Bryan both admitted later (specifically in commentary) that they had no idea which two out of Bo's three guesses were correct, because they didn't write the episode.

    • Mmmm, my guess is the sister thing and the attraction. Of course it's hilarious to imagine his moustache at that age, but it probably wasn't the case. I also think they're about the same age, both born about the mid-to-late 130 AG's.

Also, Deist, I replied on our last conversation.

I pretty much thought your reply stood well enough on its own.

My thought is that they were both born sometime between 134 and 136, putting them both somewhere between 22 and 24 when they were captured and somewhere between 35 and 37 in Book 3. And I'm now actually a bit more willing to entertain the possibility that Ghazan was the younger of the two; the Red Lotus inner circle (however ironically) had an internal hierarchy, and Ghazan deferred to all of the other three, so it'd fit.  (Same applies to why I think P'Li was older than either of them, but younger than Zaheer; I think that they established that ironic internal hierarchy when they were all young enough that "because I'm older than you!" worked as a justification.)

    • My skin is significantly darker than my brother's. If one parent had lighter skin than the other, it's definitely possible for two drastically different skin tones in siblings.

    • The Cloudsibs all have different skin tones, but that's not the issue.  The issue is that there are points at which the matter of them being siblings would have come up if that were the case.  (Such as when Bolin suggested that they were into each other...and Ghazan reacted like it was definitely true on his end, while Ming-Hua acted like she totally wasn't into that big inked-up geothermal lug; really; the very idea.)
