  • I mean Mako and Bolin seem surprised but none of them yelled "Oh wait your that sister from that rumor we once heard about growing up?!" I say that because I'm sure that kind of stuff just doesn't stay quiet.

    • Toph burried it.

      Nobody spoke of it.

I'd guess that nobody in the RCPD, besides Lin and Toph, knew about it.

    • Yeah because ripping the report an then sending the culprit away ends rumors. Look the streets would have turn this story into an unbelievable legend, and thanks to the telephone game it could of become that Lin was trying to arrest her best friend or that she was fighting with a huge group before realising that one person in the group was her sister leading to someone else giving her the scars because she was distracted and so on. This kind of stuff would not have stayed quiet forever since Lin and Su are the daughters of Toph who still is a famous person thanks to helping the Avatar end the War, creating metalbending and also being the Chief of Police of Republic City by extension her daughters would of had some fame just by association just like in real-life.

    • Well, Lin does mention there being witnesses of the event... Perhaps Toph somehow silenced them?

Nothing can stop rumors! Not even the migthy primal metalbender.

    • Well it's a rumor. Rumors come as fast as they go. Many rumors don't stand the test of time, especially 30 years.

But this is still a scandal which can last decades especially if it's about people so near to the original Team Avatar.

    • I'm guessing is that the official story was that Su, until further notice, was persona non grata in Republic City for mayhem and disorderly conduct.

Understandable. Some scandals last decades but most don't.

However, we don't know if it was as much of a huge scandal or not. The older a scandal is, the less relevant it becomes and the less people talk about it. Even the biggest scandals go away after a year or two. In 30 years, I'm sure even bigger scandals have overshadowed that one.

I'm betting Toph told Lin to deny Su's involvement, and I assume Toph did the same. It probably did go around as a rumor, and nothing more than a simple rumor. Many people probably didn't believe the rumor and it eventually went away (like all rumors and scandals do).

    • I'm guessing that many factors would have let to this story going away after a few years or so. But I still think that Korra would have heard of it if she ever would have asked around on the streets of Republic City about their Chief of Police, maybe leading to talks of how tough she is on crime that she even arrested family or something like that.

Deist Zealot wrote: I'm guessing is that the official story was that Su, until further notice, was persona non grata in Republic City for mayhem and disorderly conduct.

Well I'm not sure if Su was ostracized from the United Republic or not. I mean she wanted to reconcile with Lin, but on her terms not the opposite. Which could mean that maybe she can't go back probably because Lin would have tried to arrest her and I'm not sure if crime in the URN has statute of limitations.

    • This is an easy one: Su disappears and everyone assumes she is doing time.  Just how Toph planned it.

Toph didn't want people to know that Su was doing time. She didn't want people to even think about a child of hers doing time, which is why she ripped up the report and planned to keep it under wraps, and is why Su didn't actually do any time.

Well no, since Toph ripped the report Lin did on her sister's crime, however what could she do to the witnesses? I mean she's still police chief of the city and a Beifong while during this.

    • There could be a possibility that people didn't know that it was Toph's daughter. Witnesses probably thought it was just some random people trying to get away from cops (which i would assume happens very often in Republic City).

Best point so far against mine! Some people could be aware of the significance of Toph in ending the War and probably even less follow her through the media of the city and who knows if any newspapers reported that these were her daughters or maybe a lot did. Also the most likely people to have known who they were in the street would have been people in the neighborhood that they lived in and what are the chances of that street being the same one! Or near it.

She was probably afraid that if anyone found out one of her daughters committed a crime, it could ruin her reputation.

Yeah but who doesn't worry about that! I mean people associated to criminals are most of the time seen just as guilty, which is wrong but human nature I guess.

Clearly she is because it would be a known event like you said it would be some kind of urban myth but its not... so yeah

Not really. Just because many people knew of Toph doesn't mean they gave a crap about who her daughters were. They may not ever care to know who they are. Take Lin; nobody ever gushes over the fact that she's Toph's daughter; again, maybe nobody cares. She isn't Toph, and they only want Toph.

It wouldn't really be an urban myth if the nobody really cared about the two people involved. Toph's celebrity isn't passed on to her daughter, much like celebrities in the real world.

    • Toph ripped up the police report because she couldn't be a respectable chief of police if her daughter was in prison.

    • What about the media of Republic City, don't you all think that some repoter would have made this story a big deal?!

    • Toph would get some bad publicity but would probably scream get away from me and encase a bunch of reporters in a cage or something I would think a reporter knows better than to mess with Toph Beifong.

I think the creators overlooked this part. Anything dealing with Toph (especially something negative and "gossip worthy") would be front-page news. Like you, I also question why didn't this become urban legend.

However, it didn't or it doesn't seem like it did. That's I think Toph's celebrity didn't pass on to Su and Lin. Besides Bolin, nobody seems to care that these are Toph's daughters. By the way, Bolin seems to be the only one who gets starstruck (like when metting Zuko).

      I think:

because Toph didn't spend that much time with them as she was busy with her job, nobody saw them together out in public and made the connection that they were Toph's daughters at the time. Basically, nobody knew those were her daughters or that she even had children.

      or....

Nobody cares even though they are of the prominent Beifong family, and daughters of Toph, world famous earthbender and one who helped significantly to end the 100-year war.

      or...

New generation that doesn't know much about "famous people of yesteryear."

Also, think about the fact that, now, everybody knows that Lin is a Beifong and Toph's daughter as opposed to then. Nothing she does gets that much attention.
