I'm no sure if I missed this or it simply hasn't been explained yet, but why can't Avatar Yangchen talk? Is it because Aang severed his connection to Roku?

Yes, that is exactly why. When Aang broke the beads strengthening his connection with the past avatars he severed his connection to all of them.
Um. Interesting. I was always a bit confused on that part. I kind of thought Aang should have burned all the talismans, and not just the fire one. Also, I suppose that it acts as symbolism for Aang severing his connections to his past lives, but I wish they had explained it better. Like if he closed his 7th chakra or energybent himself, or something more like what we're used to, and saw in the show, you know?
It was actually explained relatively well in The Rift Part 2.
"Like your meditation beads, the Avatars are linked, one to the other. Ours is a chain that extends to the very beginning of history. When you broke off your relationship with Roku, you injured your relationship with all the Avatars who preceded him."
OoooOOOOOOooooh! :D I haven't read it yet. many thanks. It makes far more sense now, now that I've heard it from a character's own mouth. I wonder if Aang will find a way to fix this. Can he even still access the Avatar State? I forgot if he did in The Search.
No problem! The Rift is turning out to be my favourite comic series out of the three so far, so I would definitely suggest it. I hope Aang finds a way to repair that connection as well and I wouldn't be surprised if he did, given how spiritual he is. He can still access the Avatar State; he actually enters it while he is talking to Yangchen :)
