Yes, Zuko was a dick the 1st time Mai broke up with him, & though he tried to be the good guy when he broke up with her, he did all of the wrong things. But I'm afraid I am not on Mai's side either. The 2nd time she broke up with him is pretty crazy if you lay out the facts:
- Her problem was that he didn't tell her about a few decisions he made as head of state, & that he visited his dad in jail.
- This was apparently grounds for an immediate break-up, in spite of the fact that Zuko apologized profusely.
- Zuko was the victim of an attempted assassination. Mai has to have known that he was probably not in his best state of mind right then.
- They get together at the end of Book 2 of the original series, roughly the start of summer, Sozin's Comet arrives at the end of that summer, & The Promise takes place shortly after. So they'd only been dating for a few months. Yet she still feels entitled to know everything he does.
Potential Smoke & Shadow 2 spoilers on these last 2 points:
- By the time Smoke & Shadow 2 rolls around, unbelievably she's acting like a victim, complaining that he "broke her heart." Like it was his fault that SHE dumped HIM.
- She goes on to imply that she's basically using this new guy, & that she has to date guys who "like [her] more than she does" in return, that way her "heart doesn't get broken again."
To be honest, I always found Mai uninteresting at best, but the comics kind of make her look like a loon. It's at the point where I'm starting to wonder if her watching over her ex is sweet or kind of creepy.
So it's not just the amount of break-ups that they have, or the fact that it seems to be their standard reaction to a problem, the context around the break-ups is also pretty insane. I just can't see any reason why these 2 should get back together. Frankly, I don't think either of them should see anyone for a while. Their goal should be not to get back together, but to get their shit together.
Though, to his credit, that's pretty much what Zuko has been doing since Mai dumped him.
THIS!!!!!
Part of me hates Maiko, part of me wants it to happen. If Zuko's wife isn't Mai, then it should be a new character. Please don't let it be Suki lmao. There are more people in the world than Team Avatar, after all. If Zuko and Mai do end up together, I at least hope they get their crap together. I feel like Mai overracted when she broke up with Zuko in The Promise, and then the whole thing with Kei Lo was unfair to Kei Lo. Zuko and Mai really just need to have a long, long discussion to work things out and come to a new understanding. With the way their relationship has been thus far, I don't think they could maintain a marriage very well, much less raise a child together.
I hope I'm making sense, I'm not very good at expressing my thoughts :P
