Maybe this could be narrative misdirection, any one how worked for him could have gotten those bombs, maybe Varrick is actually inocent which would make a bigger suprise. He did offer to protect Bolin and Asami.

I agree lol!
Wait, he ESCAPED? Has the season finale already aired?! WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME?!?!
Oh, sorry haha! Yes, the season finale's out!
BLAST!
It doesn't matter if Varrick is guilty or not guilty, as long as he's Varrick.
Yup, Varrick will be Varrick.
Irony: His ambition raised him from poverty and into greath wealth, but now Varrick's on the run with only his assistant (and chances are unless Zhu Li is a masochist or otherwise tolerates/forgives his more needless abusive tendencies for whatever reason she'll sell him out whenever he outlives his usefullness; "No Varrick, this time you will do the thing!" "Uh...I sincerely apologize and offer you a raise?") as backup, and unless she's secretly a decent waterbender or close quarters combanant they're screwed unless they can use money (which Varrick might have more difficulty accessing over time despite being a global shipping magnate as it's depleted and Lin goes through the necessary paperwork to freeze his assets while investigating his more shady funds like offshore bank accounts) or are very good at evasion. Then again they were able to survive in a bear costume for an entire episode. Now Varrick's poor/ruined again because he decided to pursue illegitimate and frankly amoral at best by anyone from Adam Smith to Karl Marx's standards means of business.
I'm still hoping for him to turn out to be an insanely skilled fighter, wildly devious and a world class mastermind. I know it's little bit of a long shot, but I'm hoping.
If he does wind up being the major antagonist of book 3, I think either he's going to have to be insanely awesome or the RCPD is going to have to be insanely incompetent (and with Lin and Mako on the force I don't think that's likely).
It would be insanely cool if he turned out to be like Lex Luthor and Zhu Li was like Mercy Graves, but I know its a bit of a long shot. I'm still hoping though!
If he does appear, chances are he won't be as much of a threat considering the huge blow his image was dealt and as such he won't have as much resources. For all we know Varrick might end up actually redeeming himself-Zuko was able to make up for allying with Azula and thus basically screwing over Aang and Katara at Ba Sing Se, surely Varrick can atone for his actions (although bombing the cultural center is gonna be a tough one-who knows how many people died-then again it was for the Southern Water Tribe, who has waterbenders, fire's natural enemy :)
I never took Varrick seriously as a villain. Maybe the writers intended for him to be one, but that ship sailed when he's hanging upside down to come up with new business ideas or when he's hiding in a giant stuffed bear. Unless his character is going to be completely revamped (which will frankly be completely implausible to every viewer with more than half a brain in their heads), then it's safe to assume that Varrick is simply a red herring, a diversion meant to momentarily amuse us viewers for a few minutes. He's not the bad guy, and he never will be. Even if he never shows up in Book 3, it would be inconsequential to the storyline.
Yup. If he appears, will he redeem himself for his crimes? Team Avatar was pretty civil with him, so chances are he didn't murder anyone. Plus he was bluffing about Asami and Bolin.
