What I don't get is this: The family portrait looks really great, Aang looked really wise, kind, and handsome, and Katara looked motherly, kind, and beautiful. And their kids were great too...but that was also what I don't get. I've always known that Kya was the oldest of the kids, but on here, Bumi was the oldest. Was there a mix-up?
The original indication we had was that Kya was the oldest, but it was later revealed that Bumi is in fact the eldest child. Whether the original indication was false, or whether they simply decided to change it, I do not know.
I did hear on the internet that Kya was first and Bumi second. Not sure why that was changed. Here is a Character Sheetthat shows the order of Aang's children Kya to left which means oldest (see Jinora), Bumi, Tenzin. In the first episode of LOK.
Katara [Calmly, with a joyous undertone.] Kya and Bumi certainly were, but [Putting her hand to her chin.] Tenzin has always been... [Gesturing at Tenzin.] rather serious.
Usually someone says the first born's name -- first. Unless Nick protested that a 'girl' was the first born, I have no other idea why this was changed. And I say that will all due respect to nick.com.
Usually, but not always. In "The Awakening", Hakoda introduces himself as Katara and Sokka's father, instead of the other way around.
In any case, if they did change it, I would imagine it would just be to aid in his character. It's much more effective playing him off as a big child when you consider the fact that he's an ex-commander and that he's the oldest, plus there's more possible depth to explore in how he must've dealt with being a non-bending firstborn of the Avatar.
Now with Bumi first born instead of Kya, I feel even more sorrow for Katara. Let's assume Bumi is 10 years older than Tenzin. or even 5 like Jinora is to Meelo. that could be 5 to 10 years that Katara might have felt a failure. We also don't know how long they tried to have a child. Tenzin is 119. 15 to 19 years after 'marriage' One non-bender then one waterbender (who would give her joy) but still. No airbender. would Aang and Katara feel like maybe they won't have an airbender? IDK. the psychology should be explored... I hope. I do see both Aang and Katara in some depression. maybe a fight or something. Blame game. A 3 part dark horse book of the early years of Family Aang would be wonderful.
