The Hundred Year War, also known as The War and The Great War, was a major global conflict lasting a century that involved all four nations. It was fought between the Fire Nation and the other three nations, the Earth Kingdom, the Water Tribe and the Air Nomads. The Fire Nation, taking advantage of the absence of the Avatar and their military and technological superiority for most of the war, was able to wreak destruction and widespread loss of life in the other nations, including the infamous genocide of the Air Nomads whose Air Temples were falsely presumed to be unassailable to the Fire Nation due to the Air Nomads possessing the sole means of getting to them.[3]

The Hundred Year War was started by Fire Lord Sozin, who wished to expand the Fire Nation into a world-wide empire, and spread what he saw as his nation's prosperity to the rest of the world.[12]

The Hundred Year War ended roughly a year following the reappearance of the Avatar, Aang, due to a combination of efforts of the remaining two nations, the Avatar's group's destruction of the air fleet meant to use Sozin's Comet to deliver the killing blow to the Earth Kingdom, Aang's victory over Phoenix King Ozai, and the newly crowned Fire Lord Zuko's intention to restore peace and harmony among the four nations.[4]

The Fire Nation, following the Avatar's return shifted their strategy to became more aggressive, taking bigger risks to deliver killing blows to their opposition and therefore make any possible intervention by Aang too late. This strategy produced colossal setbacks for the Fire Nation when the Avatar became involved. For example, the Fire Nation launched a massive invasion of the North Pole when they realized that Aang was taking refuge there, and suffered a crushing defeat at the last second when the Ocean Spirit and Avatar intervened. Similarly, an effort to breach the walls of Ba Sing Se utilizing a giant drill was also thwarted. However, simultaneously immense victories were also won such as the surrender of Omashu and the infiltration and conquest of Ba Sing Se.

In the end, the sudden upstart of rebellions in Fire Nation-controlled territory in the Earth Kingdom (including Omashu), the simultaneous defeat of Ozai, the reversal of the conquest of Ba Sing Se by the White Lotus, and weariness of one hundred years of continuous war likely made the people of the Fire Nation very much open to Fire Lord Zuko's rule and his intention to restore peace.

Prelude Edit

Sozin's plan Edit

138 years ago, Fire Lord Sozin began to feel that because his nation was so fortunate in so many ways, that he should "share" this prosperity with the rest of the world. He spoke about his plan to his best friend, Avatar Roku, and tried to convince him to join him on his quest to expand "the most successful empire in history". Roku vehemently refused to help him and reminded his long-time friend that the four nations were meant to be just what they were: four.[12]

Roku's intervention Edit

"I'm sparing you, Sozin. I'm letting you go in the name of our past friendship, but I warn you, even a single step out of line will result in your permanent end." - Roku to Sozin in "The Avatar and the Fire Lord".

Years later, however, Roku discovered that Sozin had set up colonies in the Earth Kingdom despite his warnings and went to rebuke him, leading Sozin to attack him. The Avatar subdued the Fire Lord, utterly destroyed his palace and warned him that if he ever acted out of place and attacked the other nations again, he would put an end to him permanently.

Twenty-five years later, Roku's home island was consumed in a volcanic eruption so massive that Sozin could see and feel it from a hundred miles away, and he flew in on his dragon to assist his old friend. The two used their bending to try to contain the lava flow, but they were hindered by poisonous gases, which eventually overwhelmed Roku, leaving him lying on the ground and begging for his old friend's help. Sozin suddenly realized, however, that Roku's death would allow him to fulfill his plans, and he left his old friend to die. The new Avatar was then born into the Air Nomads as Aang.[12]

Twelve years after Roku had died, Sozin used the return of a comet, a celestial event that grants firebender near-unlimited power, to deliver a devastating first blow to the other nations and start the war, setting the stage for the Air Nomad Genocide.[13]

Early stages Edit

Air Nomad Genocide Edit

RenatablsAdded by Renatabls

Fire Lord Sozin decided to launch his attack upon the arrival of Sozin's Comet. With the power of the Comet, Sozin's firebender armies launched a genocide on the pacifistic Air Nomads in an attempt to kill the new Avatar, Aang, and to halt the Avatar Cycle.[13] This would overcome one of the Fire Nation's biggest obstacles to victory.[12] However, Aang had run away before the attack, thus escaping the carnage.[14] Almost all other Air Nomads were believed to have been killed in the attack, and the remainder ruthlessly hunted and killed as the Hundred Year War progressed, by the end leaving Aang the only known airbender left alive. Sozin would continue searching for Aang up until his death.[12]

Spread Edit

After the first strike against the Air Nomads, Fire Lord Sozin and his army began their first assaults into the Western Earth Kingdom. Sozin's main objective was to secure the coastline of the western part of the continent and use it as staging grounds to advance throughout the Earth Kingdom and to supply his forces. Other objectives were to cripple and destroy key Earth Kingdom trading centers to weaken the large Earth Kingdom economy. After several battles, including the Battle of Han Tui and the Battle for Taku, the Fire Nation was able to gain a strong foothold in the Earth Kingdom.[15]

The Fire Nation's war effort was focused at the Western theater through the use of a large portion of the Fire Navy, but Sozin expanded northward and eventually was able to send forces to conduct an attempted invasion of the Northern Water Tribe fifteen years after the Hundred Year War began, which ended in failure due to the North Pole's treacherous landscape. The battle saw ground forces from both the Water Tribe and the Fire Nation confront each other directly.[9]

Middle stages Edit

The results of the Hundred Year War in the Earth Kingdom.
AnnawantimesAdded by Annawantimes

Fire Lord Azulon took the throne after his father's death. He began to advance south to the Southern Water Tribe and eastward towards the walls of Ba Sing Se. Forty years into the Hundred Year War, the Fire Navy attacked the then-prosperous Southern Water Tribe likely for the same reasons they attacked the Air Nomads: to remove a potential front from the war, and in the possibility that the Avatar might have indeed been killed during the airbender genocide, in which he would be reborn into the Water Tribe. Their first attacks included the bombardment of several Water Tribe villages, but from then on afterwards they restricted their attacks to less costly surprise raids.[16]

Waterbenders across the South Pole fought the firebenders, and the Fire Nation adopted a policy of eradicating Waterbending from the south pole entirely, taking all waterbenders prisoner, leaving the non-benders to fend for themselves. Among these prisoners was Hama, who notably developed a deep hatred for her captors but eventually escaped from captivity whilst waging her own personal war on them in secrecy.[5] The Southern Water Tribe remains weak and the victim of constant raids, teetering on the edge of extinction.

The Earth Kingdom came under many large-scale attacks, with battles such as the Battle of Garsai and the fall of the Hu Xin Provinces furthering the Fire Nation's advances into the Kingdom and putting them in control of the entire northwestern third of the continent.

During the war's ninety-fourth year, the Southern Water Tribe was attacked in yet another minor raid aimed at eliminating any remaining waterbenders. The attackers, the infamous Southern Raiders, were informed that one last waterbender, who happened to be Katara, was left in the Southern Water Tribe, and were given orders to kill her. However, Katara remained undiscovered because, during this raid, her mother Kya turned herself in as the last waterbender in an attempt to protect Katara. Kya was in turn killed, but her heroic act meant that the Fire Nation would never discover the true identity of the last waterbender in the South Pole.[16] Katara would later rediscover the Avatar as an indirect result of her mother's actions.[3]

In the Earth Kingdom theater, the Fire Nation enjoyed more success, conquering every major Earth Kingdom city and stronghold until only Omashu (who hindered any major overland progress in the east) and Ba Sing Se were left. Finally, they reached the walls of Ba Sing Se itself, and the 600-Day Siege of Ba Sing Se began. In its final stages, the Fire Nation even managed to break through the Outer Wall, but their advance ended when their leader General Iroh's son was killed, resulting in Iroh's order to retreat. However, the order was also motivated by the fact his army was fatigued and had been embroiled in continuous fighting for so long.[17]

Late stages Edit

Hope fades Edit

In recent years, the ferocity of the Hundred Year War eased slightly with the Fire Nation nearing victory. Ozai was crowned Fire Lord upon Azulon's death.[17] Iroh's forces retreated from the area of Ba Sing Se, although they remained in control of the Western Lake where they began construction of the Drill. The Northern Mountains were left alone, allowing refugees to move in.

However, the conquered western shore of the Earth Kingdom was put under tighter control, where General Fong's fortress was the only Earth Kingdom military base left, hidden in a coastal mountain range.[18] Several fortified bases were set up there. Prince Zuko began his search for the Avatar upon his banishment three years before, hoping to reclaim his throne.[19] Zhao, an eager and ambitious naval officer, began plotting the conquest of the Northern Water Tribe.[20] Any attempt at rebellion was dealt with harshly, and the Fire Nation began arresting any earthbenders in their territory, forcing them into slave labor on offshore factories and shipyards.[21]

To add to the Earth Kingdom's troubles, a large number of their villages and cities were now under Fire Nation control, with their native citizens forced to serve the will of the Fire Lord if they were to avoid persecution. Only non-essential territories were left alone. Even though major cities like Ba Sing Se and Omashu remained free at the time, the Fire Nation clearly controlled the majority of the continent, free to prowl almost anywhere in the north and west unopposed.[19]

Team Avatar Edit

Avatar Aang is awakened.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

The fortunes of the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes made a turn for the better with the sudden return of the Avatar and last airbender, Aang, who was rediscovered by Katara.[3] This immediately attracted the attention of both Zuko and Zhao, who chased him across the world. As the Avatar traveled north to the North Pole in an attempt to learn waterbending, Zhao was promoted to Admiral.[15] A small force attacked the Northern Mountains, only to be beaten back in what culminated as the Battle for the Northern Air Temple. However, the defeated force did bring back the Fire Nation an important new invention - the hot air balloon.[22]

Upon discovering that the Avatar had succeeded in reaching the North Pole, Zhao ordered almost the entire Navy to advance on the North Pole.[20] However, the Siege of the North was unsuccessful due to the Avatar's intervention, and the fleet was all but destroyed. Zhao was killed by La, the Ocean Spirit after an unsuccessful attempt to kill Tui, the Moon Spirit, in a bid to neutralize the waterbender's power. With the Fire Nation's main ambition out of the picture and their control of the seas severely weakened, Ozai had his armies continue the slow and steady advances on all the Earth Kingdom fronts, while discreetly sending his daughter to search for the traitorous Iroh and Zuko.[23]

Soon after the defeat at the North Pole, the Fire Nation won a great victory by conquering the city of Omashu, capturing King Bumi in the process, leaving Ba Sing Se the last major Earth Kingdom city unconquered. Though most of the city's population managed to flee under the ruse of a plague, the city itself remained under the control of a Fire Nation governor and was renamed New Ozai by Princess Azula.[24] The loss of Omashu left the route into the southern Earth Kingdom unblocked and defenseless, although the Fire Nation decided to focus most of its military on the Capital, sending only light forces to subjugate the southern villages and townships.

The Fire Nation's next major battle would be at the walls of Ba Sing Se once more. The drill, a powerful and gigantic mechanized siege weapon, attacked the Outer Wall. Unfortunately for them, the Avatar had just arrived. Though the machine succeeded in drilling through the Wall, it was destroyed by the Avatar, and the attack failed and the newly-drilled hole blocked with wreckage.[25]

Earth Kingdom falls Edit

Princess Azula and her team infiltrate Ba Sing Se.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

Princess Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee, a trio of the Fire Nation Academy's best, infiltrated the capital of Ba Sing Se.[7] Clad in Kyoshi Warrior uniforms, stolen from the warriors after having defeated them in an earlier engagement,[26] Azula infiltrated the court of the Earth King and undermined the Dai Li. She eventually convinced Long Feng to launch a coup d'état against the Earth King.[6] In the end, she double-crossed him and assumed control over the capital. She also succeeded in capturing her uncle and convincing Zuko to rejoin the Fire Nation, clouding his judgment by promising him his father's love. With Ba Sing Se under their control, the Fire Nation was close to victory, with only the tattered Water Tribes and parts of the Earth Kingdom left opposing them. Azula also learned that Ba Sing Se had been planning a major invasion of the Fire Nation home islands on the day of a solar eclipse in late summer, which would briefly leave all firebenders powerless.[6] With the Western Navy still recovering from the Siege of the North, the invasion might have been successful had the Dai Li not arrested the Council of Five.[10] Still, with knowledge that their homeland would still be vulnerable, the Fire Nation made plans to use this to their advantage.

To make matters worse, Avatar Aang was gravely injured in a failed attempt to defeat Azula, who struck him down with a powerful lightning blast.[10] Although Katara was able to revive him, Aang remained in a coma in the following weeks, and he was immediately presumed dead by the entire world. When word of Aang's defeat spread across the globe, the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes lost hope and the Fire Nation came close to declaring victory in its imperialist war.[27] Aang and his friends traveled into the Fire Nation incognito until the time to strike came again.[28]

Several weeks later, Ozai called a war meeting with his generals. One of them, Shinu, said that while Ba Sing Se had been conquered, a number of Earth Kingdom rebellions arose and that the Earth Kingdom military was still controlling vast swaths of territory mainly in the south, which kept the Fire Nation from claiming ultimate victory in the Hundred Year War. When Zuko said that the Earth Kingdom could endure anything as long as they had hope, Azula said they should "take their precious hope, and the rest of their land, and burn it all to the ground." Ozai, using this idea, planned to use the power of the returning Sozin's Comet to completely destroy the Earth Kingdom.[29]

Though the Fire Nation controlled great swathes of territory they were not unopposed. A small multinational invasion force led by Chief Hakoda of the Southern Water Tribe and the Avatar assaulted the Fire Nation Capital on the Day of Black Sun, and they were nearly successful, but unfortunately their supposed success was actually a carefully planned trap by the Fire Nation. Though they were repelled by the new Fire Nation air force of airships and most of the resistance leaders were captured, they proved that the Fire Nation could continue to be resisted as long as hope was maintained.[30]

The invasion proved near-successful, though it was a big casualty for the water and earth forces.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

However, the Day of Black Sun was not a total failure for those resisting the Fire Nation. During the Eclipse, King Bumi saw the chance he had been waiting for. He broke out of his prison and, with the firebenders unable to firebend, retook the city of Omashu single-handedly.[31]

Prince Zuko realized the full extent of the Fire Nation's crimes and joined the Avatar so that Aang could learn firebending to fight the Fire Lord.[32] This development only increased the threat the Avatar posed towards the Fire Nation. Coinciding with this, Princess Azula was betrayed by her allies, Mai and Ty Lee after a failed sabotaging of an Escape from the Boiling Rock, badly hurting both her psyche and her leadership ability.[33]

Fire Lord Ozai intended to crown himself Phoenix King prior to the arrival of Sozin's Comet and to have Azula succeed him as Fire Lord. Ozai intended to finish the Hundred Year War by using the comet's immense power to vanquish his enemies, so the Avatar's group, one of the Fire Nation's greatest threats, had to act quickly to prevent this catastrophe.[29]

End of the War Edit

Fall of leaders Edit

Aang strips away Ozai's firebending through energybending, signaling the Fire Lord's defeat.
The BosAdded by The Bos

When Sozin's Comet made its return to the world, Ozai launched his massive attack on the Earth Kingdom with his armada of airships. When he arrived at the Wulong Forest, which he quickly proceeded to incinerate, Avatar Aang confronted him. Despite Aang's pleas to end the Hundred Year War peacefully, Ozai attacked him. At first, Ozai and Aang were evenly matched, but Aang refused to go on the offensive due to his belief that all life was sacred.[34] Ozai gained the upper hand, but accidentally smashed Aang into a rock that hit the scar on his back. This opened his seventh chakra, allowing Aang to enter the Avatar State. Using the Avatar State's power, Aang went on the offensive. Despite his enhanced firebending, Ozai was quickly forced to retreat. Aang pursued him, and eventually pinned him down. But just as he was about to deliver the finishing blow, Aang left the Avatar State. Instead of killing Ozai, Aang used energybending to strip him of his firebending.[4]

Azula, after losing the alliance of Mai and Ty Lee,[33] was badly weakened by a state of mental instability. This caused her to lose all trust in everyone; thinking everyone was against her, she then banished all those loyal to her, and in effect, had no protection or allies. This, combined with her subsequent defeat, effectively rendered her unable to fight in the Hundred Year War any longer.[34][4]

Conclusion Edit

The airships are destroyed.
ThailogAdded by Thailog

While Aang and Ozai fought, three members of the Avatar's group, Sokka, Toph and Suki, hijacked one of the airships in Ozai's armada. Using an "airship slice" tactic, they successfully destroyed the fleet. The Order of the White Lotus, under Iroh's leadership, successfully retook Ba Sing Se, a colossal defeat for the Fire Nation. Zuko and Katara found and defeated Azula so Zuko could take his place as Fire Lord of the Fire Nation.

With the loss of Omashu, Ba Sing Se, and the fall of their leaders, the Fire Nation Armies found themselves unable to continue the war effort.[4]

Aftermath Edit

"A hundred years of fighting has left the world scarred and divided. But with the Avatar’s help, we can get it back on the right path, and begin a new era of love and peace." - Fire Lord Zuko in "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang".

RenatablsAdded by Renatabls

After these victories, Zuko was crowned Fire Lord and officially declared the war to be over. At his coronation, Fire Lord Zuko promised before a large audience of the world's citizens that he would dedicate his rule to rebuilding the war-torn world, and that he would do this with the help of his friend and partner, Avatar Aang.

After being defeated by Aang, Fire Lord Ozai was arrested and put in prison. It was recently revealed that Azula has been institutionalized in a mental health facility on an isolated island near the capital.[35]

The world has begun the process of rebuilding. The city of Ba Sing Se has begun rebuilding and even has a brand new tea shop. As Fire Lord Zuko stated, the world has a lot of rebuilding to do, but the war is finally over.[4]

However, one year later, the Fire Nation has not completely adapted to the change. It has started a confrontation that threatens to throw the world back into the Hundred Year War, causing Avatar Aang to intervene.[36]

War capabilities Edit

During the war, it was obvious from the beginning that there was a great disparity in means and effectiveness between the military powers of the four nations.

Air Nomads Edit

The Air Nomads, being pacifistic, had no formal military power, nor any standing means of fighting a war. Being nomadic and reclusive from the world-at-large, they believed that they were for the most part safe from military excursions, as Aang optimistically stated.[37] They possessed no weapons, and whatever they created was hand-made.

Water Tribes Edit

Northern Tribe Edit

The Northern Water Tribe was an isolated power that managed to survive mostly unscathed for much of the war because of its remote and treacherous location. Centralized around tribal leaders, and unified by a cultural feeling of unity, the Northern tribe was able to unite in the face of Fire Nation aggression.

The Northern Tribe had a warrior class, as opposed to a standing army. The tribe had a large number of benders able to utilize the surroundings of their home, and a number of none-benders warriors who utilized spears and various weapons made from animal bones. For the majority of the war, women were forbidden from offensive waterbending, restricted to healing, and social convention kept them from being warriors.

While not having a navy, waterbenders used small canoes to surround and neutralize the bulky Fire Nation warships. This worked well against individual ships, or small groups, but was impractical against fleets, and especially the armada assembled by Zhao. These ships were not made for journeys, but for quick response to immediate threats. The northern tribe, like the southern tribe also had large traveling ships made of bones and treated animal skins.

Southern Tribe Edit

Unlike the Northern Tribe, the Southern Water Tribe employed female waterbenders. Unfortunately, the Southern Tribe was much less isolated than their sister tribe, and close to the end of the Hundred Year War suffered near extinction. All waterbenders, apart from Katara, were removed from the Southern Tribe during the middle of the war, essentially eliminating the Southern Tribe as a factor in the overall war.

As opposed to the almost impregnable fortress-like city of the Northern Tribe, the Southern Tribe had a much smaller, inland walled-town. Over time this town was reduced to a makeshift village.

By this time, the warriors of the tribe departed for the Earth Kingdom, led by Chief Hakoda.

The Southern Tribe employed sailing ships made of bones and animal skins.

Earth Kingdom Edit

The Earth Kingdom's military might mostly relied upon its sheer size. Unfortunately this proved to be its main disadvantage in fighting a centralized power like the Fire Nation. The Earth Kingdom was composed of a number of provinces loosely controlled by the Earth King at Ba Sing Se. However, most of these provinces had their own local lords, or in cases like Bumi, kings, all of whom paid lip-service to the Earth King, but were in fact for the most part autonomous.

This political divisiveness meant that the majority of Earth Kingdom military retaliation to the Fire Nation was conducted by provincial lords and kings. By the time of the reign of Earth King Kuei, the Earth King had no knowledge of the war, and no control over the military until the Grand Secretariat, Long Feng, was arrested. The Earth King's sphere of influence was limited to the walls of Ba Sing Se itself.

Earth Kingdom military prowess paled in comparison to the tactics of the Fire Nation army. The army as a whole was structured similarly; benders, and then a number of varying sorts of none-bender infantry, such as pikemen and swordsmen. Where as the Fire Nation used mainly machines, along with rhinos for certain terrain, the Earth Kingdom typically employed animal labor, such as ostrich horse cavalry, which had a diverse amount of uses. The only non-animal vehicle shown were stone tanks mounted on caterpillar treads. These tanks were moved via earth-bending, but were versatile juggernauts capable of laying waste to their metal Fire Nation counterparts.

The Earth Kingdom navy utilized wooden ships. The Fire Navy dominated the seas during the Great War, with the Earth Kingdom possessing no seen naval presence, although General How mentioned there still being naval forces during the Council of Five's discussion of the invasion plan.

The Earth Kingdom possessed no air force. The technology was newly founded at the time the Earth Kingdom fell.

Near the end of the Hundred Year War, the multi-ethnic invasion force that invaded the Fire Nation on the solar eclipse possessed several new technological devices, including caterpillar-tread transports, submarines, and a number of smaller inventions devised by Sokka and the mechanist. Most of these were not employed by the Earth Kingdom as a whole at this time.

Fire Nation Edit

The Fire Nation, a relatively small but prosperous empire, possessed technological prowess beyond any of the other nations. By the time the war began, they had metal-based ships, steam-powered engines and machines, the ability to mass-produce standard military hardware, and many other industrial-age based social, economic, and political traits. Numerous factories for metalwork, military construction, and commodities dotted the Fire Nation homeland.

Unlike the Earth-Kingdom, the Fire Nation from the beginning of the war was a centralized power, directly controlled and directed by the dictatorial power of the Fire Lord and his advisers. This combination of unity and technological advancement gave the Fire Nation a distinct edge over its main military opponent, the Earth Kingdom, which still functioned under a feudal system. The Fire Nation military was organized, rigidly controlled, and directed by the Fire Lord and his council of generals. The army was organized into benders, various divisions of non-benders, such as archers, pikemen and swordsmen, and into a domestic national guard. The army employed a variety of war machines, including steam-powered tanks, trebuchet artillery, and the drill.

The navy was structured similarly, possessing several fleets of the most advanced warships in the world, including a domestic defense fleet that formed a large blockade around Fire Nation waters. These ships were steam-powered, and used deck-mounted trebuchets for long-range assault.

Near to the end of the war, the Fire Nation also employed a burgeoning air force of airships and zeppelins, utilizing benders for close-quarters defense, and bombs for air-to-ground bombardment. The zeppelins also featured a forward-cannon for shooting bombs forward at level targets.

The Fire Nation initially had surprise on their side; however, given the intervention of Avatar Roku this was lost to the twenty years between the first established colony, and the death of Roku, which allowed Sozin to pursue his ambition.

Trivia Edit

  • The Hundred Year War's monikers (the Hundred Year War and the Great War) can be perceived as allusions to the real-world wars of the Hundred Years' War (which actually lasted 116 years {1337-1453}) and World War I (the first war involving all the major world powers {1914-1918}).

  • So its like Warsaw uprising during 1944?

    "Warszawo, walcz!!"

    by RaggaR
  • aang should use some wird bending to bring the air normads back

  • I wonder if some wardens (nazi war criminals ) got put on trial

    • no, because the shows based on ASia [mostly China] so, nothing about nazi war criminals to talk about... and the wardens command their prisons like chinese labor camps [Laogai prision] where reactionary members of the society go to labor in coal mines, etc

  • If the EK had Equalists on their side during the war the Fire Nation would have definately ran away like little girls.

    • no

    • Due to their anti bending nature, they would just turn on their former leaders <star wars order 66 anyone?> and massacre all of earth kingdom's benders AND proclaiming themselves as next leaders of EK! what a 'nice' and 'awesome' victory it would be for them ¬¬ And also FN got trebuchets,Yu Yan,archers,Tanks,Ships,Bombs and even Cannons, and millions of troops... one month of a true meat-grinder against the might of the FN war machine and the Equalists would turn into peaceful and life-unharming monks ASAP

    • written by -fnsuport- too...

If FN had won the war, probably there woudnt be Equalist movmt too... since RCity woult not come to existence... it would be all cities like FN colony in the deserter episode... or in the best case, cities like Yu Dao,Gaoling [not a colony but big city] or that EK city near to volcano... FN would never create a city like R City... the world would just be the same 70 years after...

    • If the Fire Nation won the war, the entire Earth Kingdom, and probably the Water Tribes would be burnt down. It would probably be mass chaos. Nothing but war and killing.

  • It would be awesome/a pleasure if FN used some 'horse' archery [rhino xD] to destroy its enemies, it'd be great to see some FN archers shooting/burning all, and routing the enemies, with their morale crushed haha ^_^ and it'd give FN a nice advantage against EK cavalry too. And while the cavalry shoots arrows of doom against the enemies, huge soldier rushes comes in to finish off the resistance. ^_^-fnsupport-

  • Is anyone else a bit bothered that the war simply ended after Ozai lost his bending? That really wouldn't end a war.

    • yeah,FN still would put a hell of a fight!!! -fnsupport-

    • read the promise series (only part 1 is out though) it somewhat discusses this

    • ww2 ended when hitler died (well in europe anyway). ozai got captured. so the fire nation surrendered.

    • In Real-life ww2 for me only ended when Yanks dropped the A-bomb in Japan and Hirohito surrendered to avoid extra suffering to his people... then the ww2 truly ended...

In the Avatar world Ozai got captured but the war could still go on, it only ended because with Ozai arrested and Azula inable to rule, The Avatar's best friend < Zuko > rose up to become the Next Fire Lord, putting a end in the war... so its more like a peace treaty, and armistice or just a 'peaceful' way of ending the 100yr-war.

  • Question: Sozin occupied Earth Kingdom territory 20 years BEFORE the Air Nomad genocide. Was this part of the Hundred Year War (but then this war lasted 120 years) or war this another, little war?

    • The Fire Nation colonies are actually 125 years old (possibly older), I did the math. :) I don't think it was part of the HYW, neither was it a smaller scale war. Remeber, the Fire Nation colonized the relatively undeveloped, rural parts of the Earth Kingdom, turning small towns such as Yu Dao into industries that are the capital of the world. I don't think there was much resistance, maybe a few battles here, a few battles there. I don't think it was a separate war or part of the HYW.

    • Just like the Anschluss (Nazi occupation of Austria in 1938) wasn't part of WWII, Sozin's occupation of Earth Kingdom territory 25 years before Roku's death (and 37 years before the HYW started) is not considered part of the war.

    • Well, that depends -- did Sozin invade the colony or did he just agree to a union with it? The 1 September 1939 invasion of Poland by Germany is considered to be the start of WWII.

  • Katara

  • [ http://www.nick.com/mynick/messageboards/viewboard.jhtml?bID=106921 Abra, cadabra, alakazam!]

Is this an official enough name? And for the sake of the confused, read the firstentence in the description.

    • It might not be . . . the official name of where she lives isn't "Southern Water Country", unless that's changed since Aang's time.

    • I hope it isn't just a "tribe" anymore. I hope the water benders have better technology and a better military than they did in ATLA. I don't want to see a repeat of what the southern raiders did to all those poor Waterbenders in the prisons. I could see The southern Water Country becoming the Airbender worlds Israel, the greatest, most well trained, military in world, despite their small size and lack of resources. Dedicated to never being victimized by a foreign power ever again.

    • Untill a revamped Fire Navy attacks, but now armed with cannons and primitive versions of missile launchers, which is pretty easy to do,since the Chinese did that even without steam power and such. <all it takes is firework-like propellers, bombs,a good launcher, etc> and the good old trebuchet for epic sights of things going 'boom' ~fnsuport~

    • Why you hate on Southern water tribe? havent they suffered enough at the hands and flames of the fire nation? They didnt deserve anything the Southern raiders did to them.

  • anyone think that during LOK that we will still see some effects of the war?

    • Yeah bet we're gonna see some former FN colonies who later developed into larger cities/trade hubs. Probably the over population in BSS lower rings continues [refugees and now their sons, daughters, etc] And the whole shocking-awe the name Fire Nation would bring to some people.

    • I meant like see some villages who are still recovering from fire nation attacks or Ba Sing Se recovering.

    • not any more than we see from ww2 in real life. ww2 was about 70 years ago. i suppose the lack of airbenders in the world could be compared to the lack of jews, i think there is less than half of jews in modern times than there were before ww2.

maybe we'll see some veterans from the war.

  • and bombs for air-to-ground bombardment -Wow,when I read that,I just said 'yeah! let's bomb 'em back to the stone age' go FN!!

  • From what I've been learning about World War 2 in my history class, it seems like the War in Avatar: The Last Airbender™ is a parody on World War 2.

    • It cannot be a parody, no matter if it is fictional or not. Yes, the two wars do have similarities like with the genocide, but they are two different wars. One is fictional and one is not. And even if it is fictional it can't be a parody because parodies are humorous not serious.

    • no,its more like ancient wars, 3 kingdoms and all

  • Their attempt (EK+Avatar allies) into invading FN capital is equal to the battle of Changde in ww2 when the Japs came and captured the city but they got destroyed by Chinese Army later, forcing the Japs to a retreat, in which many soldiers were captured/killed

  • Jeez, if this is the Airbender worlds WWI, then their WW2 will be a cakewalk in comparison.

  • ~From a FN Fan~ Hmm,I don't think the FN's gonna be a rustbelt after the war,and at T.LOK times Why? they can easily shut down war-related factories, create more market-oriented industries and trainee programs to work them, and focus on agriculture too, since FN's land is mostly fertile and good for harvesting and planting. Btw,if EK+WT tries something like Us to Cuba,North Korea or versailles treaty like FN is pretty much capable to sustain internal market to some extent since its pretty big, at least the people wont suffer from this kind of embargo [IF something like that even happens,FN retaliating could be extremely justified since it would be some kind of hate+vengeance doctrine]

    • the FN war factories destroyed a good amount of the environment, so I dont think an internal market would last very long. Also, (and correct me if Im wrong) didnt germany have a tough time turning from a war based economy.to a market one after WWII? PS, although I dont hate the FN people or culturre, they did commit 100 years of war and outright genocide. IF The whole treaty of versailles thing did happen, the FN would deserve nothing less.

    • they got that Chinese-kicka$$ spirit,if things go bad in the FN, they'd go all Deng Xiaoping policy grew at 10% rates per year [FN's GDP] then get ready to meltdown the enemies, plain as$-kicking action when the comet passes again

    • Why does this guy blindly support the FN? They committed genocide and destruction on a HUGE scale. Isn't that a reason enough to at least think about supporting them? I guess I just empathize with Air Nomads and the Water Tribe because they were the innocent victims of a madmans Ego. If wiping out a whole people group just to promote a policy of expansion, and National pride. I'm sorry I have no sympathy for you. I believe in justice for the victims of war. I hope the FN gets what it had coming in either LOK or "the promise."

    • If you [nony above] are right, I can totally picture FN weakened being invaded by Earth Kingdom soldiers,FN fighting bravely,EK capturing the Fire Nation Capital and doing something like of Nanking Massacre (using ppl to practice aim, bury alive [earthbenders good at this]tossing ppl to sea with rock on their feets, etc) FN striking back [time... for revenge!] to a point that EK would never military/as a country recover again

    • the victim becoming the victimizer. Another theme the Airbender universe is known for.

    • P.s. in the day of black sun, tyro and haru had the helpless firebenders on the ropes. They couldve killed them but they gave them the opportunity to surrender. Which they did. Personally I think the EK is a lot more altruistic than you give it credit for.

    • Well, that may work for Haru and Tyro or MAYBE all of that rag-tag team of DoBS Invasion. But remember they arent part of normal EK Army, they are just skilled civilians [earthbenders] fighting for a cause. They are not part of the avg. army, EK is not altruistic. it works for the WT/FN too. remember the thug soldiers from Zuko Alone brainwashing/torture from the Dai Li,Long Fengs corruption and conspiracy. General Fong's lack of respect with the Avatar [the one EK needs a BIG help] or his friends. Master Yu's greed [hunt his own student for money? what else can he do?] Well,I can list some other examples, but that proves that EK is not ALL altruistic, peace loving,hippie-guys most of the fan base thinks. So,before talking bad of the FN think about the actions of other nations before ;) ~fnsupport~

    • "Love your enemies." The Fire Nation people were pretty much blindly led by the throne & its inner circle, indoctrinated from birth (or from extensive propaganda in Sozin's time, most likely) to believe that the war was simply due to uncouth opposition to the Fire Nation's intended beneficience to the rest of the world, as Zuko pretty much told his father in "The Day of Black Sun" after having seen the light of the actual truth on that subject. The responsibility for the genocide of the Air Nomads and the war in general rests squarely upon the leader's shoulders . . . which is partially why Zuko is having such a tough time in "The Promise"; he has to take the responsibility for the sins of his forefathers (as Iroh once put it), and try redeem the people of his nation from the power-plays of Sozin, (most likely) Azulon, and Ozai, without allowing devestating harm to come to his people in the process. (And I'm not exactly sure when "Legend of Aang" played up "the victim becomes the victimizer" card.) In any case, the point is to seek the good even of one's enemies, and rather bloodthirstly seeking revenge it would be better to seek a world in which the Earth Kingdom's need for justice is met without the Fire Nation civilians being harmed unnecessarily in the process.

    • It's impossible to love you enemies. It's a true fact.

    • As I already explained (though perhaps not clearly), love does not consist of mere emotions but of willing and (if possible) doing good for another person. This can be done even for one's enemies wherever and whenever it does not interfere with seeking the good of others, regardless of one's feelings regarding them. And I'm not making this up on the spot; this was the manner in which the words were used by Jesus of Nazareth, as well as moral leaders throughout history. So no, it has not been proven that one cannot love one's enemies, in the only sense I ever meant to discuss it in.

    • If you consider a person your enemy, you don't love them, you oppose them. It is impossible to love something or someone your against.

    • I'm sorry, but I do believe you are missing my point. Your enemies are those who are/have been opposed to you, whom you can choose seek the good of even if they wish to keep enemity between you and them after you choose do so. In that sense, you can love those who remain opposed to you (though you no longer are trying to be opposed back at them).

To bless those that continue to curse you, and who show no sign of stopping, in order to seek their good and the good of all above all else, is the sign of a higher moral character then most people have - which would solve many of the world's problems, if only they would be willing to cultivate such an ethic.

    • If you have those kind of feelings for a person you don't consider them your enemy. Just your oppressor.

    • Except you don't always have those feelings at first - it's human nature not to - and so the words (Jesus's, not mine) were apparently framed around what one would have to do in the mean time, which is to temporarily go against one's own nature and do good things for those one despises, until the good works one does for them transforms one's view of them into something postive. It's in the interrum period that the phrase really fits, feeling-wise; there's also the fact that from the outside, this change of stance may not effect much on a larger scale and one may still seem to have certain enemies because one identifies with a larger culture which hates the oppressing force (or the enslaved people; the oppressors typically despise the enslaved as well) and hasn't quite been able to transform it just yet.

    • Thanks for explaining your ideals. Well see you around the wikia.

    • That's rude, Omar. Please be civil.

    • Really? It didn't come off as rude to me - just a way of making a definite end to our little side conversation.

    • It seems like Omar was dismissing you.

    • Perhaps; it's kind of hard to tell, given his words. (Hey, I was told that "Free as a Bison" was intending to insult me by calling me "the St. Paul of Tokka", but it turns out he was being sincere. Can't say I can rule it out in this case as well.) In any case, you can't convince everyone to join your side or even to stop remaining opposed to your ideas; it'd be much more consistent to my expressed ideals for me to live and let live in this case, as that's really the only way one doesn't come off as a "soapbox moralizer" to the public - by living out one's ideals, and not pressing the matter too strongly when it's difficult to follow through upon (which this point certianly was, and I kind of expected a lot of people would remain opposed and possibly dismiss me and was ready for it beforehad).

    • No, I'm dismissing myself Mysteria. Tophfanboy really defended his point of view really good without disrespecting anyone. This conversation wasn't a very heated one I think. Sorry if my comment last night came as rude.

    • Toph's Fanboy is male. Lol.

    • Yes! We defeated you for all time! You'll never rise up from the ashes of humiliation Pretty much describes whats truly awesome in Avatar, the power to overwhelm and destroy.

    • The FN didnt win. Andbefore you say they did, think about it. They are no longer expanding, and had to return the majority of the land they took (colonies like Yu Dao being the exception), and they have to give up their designs for weapons, and a whole lot of Gold to partially compensate for all those poor waterbenders and EK civilians they slaughtered/imprisoned. By LOK FN is,going to be in SO much debt its not even funny. Id say all things considered they lost in the end.

    • Why would the FN compensate for EK/WT? Pay gold? nah,If I was Zuko I'd just say: 'You guys want gold? umm.. NO! Oh,seriously? you guys want some? Come and get it. <gets on fighting stance> to get our gold,u guys are gonna fight on foreign territory, our guerillas/surprise strikes would tear you apart and your shame would be eternal.

    • The EK wouldn't FORCE zuko to give some financial compensation. He'd give it out of his own wish to redeem his people for their crimes against humanity. Money can never replace those who died, but a little bit of it can at least go to the children of the people who died in battle / were imprisoned in camps and coal mines (Tyro and Haru in the EK's case, the families of the southern water benders in the WT's case.)

    • Nah,If I was firelord I'd say: Let's build for those reallocated colonials get a place to live, make commerce, plant and all. any surplus gold will be used for... PARTY! Yeeehaaa! why? because after all that fight, war and rear-kicking WE need some compensation!! let's call in for the Rough Rhinos to play some good music, along with some good chinese food. let's have fun!!! ^_^ ~fnsupport~

    • there is no hope for you FNsupport. try telling that straightfaced to Aang and hed probably go all glowy on you.

    • Nah,he wouldnt be able to do that with me If I was there... due to his education,he could kill the guy who almost tea-bagged the entire Earth Kingdom AND scarred his best friend... imagine me... but if its SO necessary for him to act with violence at me, well that totally hurted my feelings (^_^), It be CoDestiny all over again... go glowey then... <lightning/fire blast struck> baaad idea heh ~fnsupport~

    • Sorry, above I meant He couldn't* kill the man... lil' mistake =) -fnsupport-

  • It'd be nice to see Fire Nation's Army in LOK ^^ im hoping to see it xD

    • I believe that by the start of LOK the fire nation will be a declining superpower. what historians refer to as a "~rustbelt " (a decling or former industrial superpower that now has little influence in world affairs.) The WT and EK would probably go all "treaty of versailles" on FNs Germany. Devastating the FNs economy.

    • /\ If that's true,I'd like to see some kind of Boxer Rebellion led by the Fire Nation against this tyranny. but I can totally picture EK+WT doing unequal treaties and destroying economy, forcing FN to lease some territories to them... yeah EK+WT = the 8Nation Alliance Scourge FN = Boxer Rebellion+Qing Uprising.

    • ~same guy that posted above~ Oh,BTW And FN is always brave and powahful, even if EK+WT Wants to destroy FN Economy instead of trading with FN [Stupid idea since fn got the best tech ya?] there's only 30 years left to Sozin's Comet arrival [counting from beggining of TLOK era]. FN could get a nice revenge kicking some ars3 in the comet's day hah! long live Celestial Empire of FN!! All under heaven must bow to FN!

  • Bah. Didn't realize I wasn't logged in. I posted the below comment and did the edit.

  • the avatar world worlds war.

  • If the War was the World of Avatar's version of world war (which it probualy was) then Fire Nation is Germany and Japan Earth Kingdom is China Northern Water Tribe is United States Southern Water Tribe is United Kingdom Air Nomads are Jews Order of White Lotus is United Nations and Fire Nation colonies ocupied countries

    • Nah,I think its more: Fire Nation [in west] Soviets and Red Army [in east] Chinese communists, the PRC,Mao Zedong being Ozai-like Earth Kingdom: Germany+Japan [BSS being Manchukuo]Japan-allied states like Mongolia,Thailand,Nanking,Manchukuo [most of them puppet govt] Water Tribe: Northern wt: United States Southern; Western Europe [ravaged by allies and axis] Air Nomads: Tibet [OFC]!!

    • United nations didnt exist during that time [ww2] Germany+Japan just exterminated a lot of people but they didnt care about colonizing and rebuilding, like FN did to Yu Dao,Omashu, and countless other colonies. Air Nomads are Tibetans or Nepal/Bhutan even Gyatso is one of Dalai's names Earth Kingdom will never be China,NEVER. they culture is similar to CERTAIN dynasties in China like Song and Jin/Yuan/Qing [those 3 dynasties were not ruled by Han Chinese]

    • United Nations did not exist at the time but the League of Nations (it's precursor) did. and Air nomads were mass murdered by Fire Nation just as Jews were mass murdered by Germans also Japan set up colonies in China (such as Manchuko / Manchuria) and Germans occupied countless nations (such as Poland)

    • That was not colonies, that was puppet states, instead of being DIRECTLY governed by theJapn in that case. AND Air Nomad's outcome in the war and all was directly based on chinese invasion of Tibet. as both [FN,AN] doesnt EVEN resemble germans, jews or any kind of european. btw, most of series was based upon asian culture. And the axis countries left the LoN cuz they got different interests on the world and all than the us,britains, french. And FN looks like PRC and Imperial China not Japan. Japan is kyoshi and dai li [they look like japs secret police, even better then gestapo]

  • It's kind of stupid, when you look at the combatants. Air Nomads Fire Nation Earth Kingdom Water Tribe VS. Team Avatar White Lotus

    • Actually, it was Fire Nation military Vs. Team Avatar, Air Nomads, Earth Kingdom, Water Tribe, and the OWL
