Overview Edit

Aang awakens to find himself gravely wounded on board a stolen Fire Nation ship with his friends. He is shocked and dismayed to discover that the world believes him to be dead. Zuko and Azula are welcomed home as heroes, where Fire Lord Ozai congratulates his son, having been told by Azula that Zuko struck Aang down. Zuko, however, secretly believes he survived. After a great deal of persuasion, Aang agrees to keep his existence a secret.

Synopsis Edit

The episode begins with Aang awakening on a Fire Nation cruiser. Upon seeing the Fire Nation tapestries hanging in his room, he panics, believing he has been captured. He flees his room and runs into two guards in Fire Nation uniform, who turn out to be Pipsqueak and The Duke, two former members of Jet's Freedom Fighters. Aang attempts to flee, only to find himself crippled by his wounds, so he stumbles and falls on the upper deck. Much to his surprise he finds himself greeted by his friends, as well as Bato and Hakoda, all clad in Fire Nation uniforms and cloaks. Overwhelmed by this whole situation and weak from his wounds, he faints.

The scene switches to Zuko watching the moon until he is approached by Mai. He reveals his conflicted feelings about his internal changes and his imminent return to the Fire Nation. She tells him not to worry, and kisses him before leaving. Meanwhile, Katara informs Aang that he has hair now. Aang begins to feel pain once more and returns to his room with Katara to undergo healing. While she is healing his back, Aang begins to recall the battle in Ba Sing Se, and he feels that he has failed everyone as the Avatar; as well, he suddenly realizes that he was more than merely hurt by Azula's lightning attack but that his spirit had actually been separated from his body - and that Katara had saved his life. Katara says that she used the spirit water on him, not knowing what exactly she did; Aang says she saved him.

They return outside again as daylight begins to break where Sokka tells him about how they had returned to Chameleon Bay after he was injured. They had found his father, and later captured a Fire Nation ship. Hakoda greets Aang and tells him that though the Fire Nation has captured Ba Sing Se, they would still go ahead with the plan to invade the Fire Nation on the Day of Black Sun. In an angered tone, Katara corrects him that it is Sokka's plan. Sokka explains that the Earth King and his bear, Bosco, had decided to travel the world in disguise. He mentions that they had recently gotten through the Serpent's Pass. According to Sokka, although their forces are greatly outnumbered for the invasion, they have one clear advantage - the world believes the Avatar to be dead, and thus the Fire Nation will not be hunting for him any longer. However, Aang does not take this revelation well at all, because this marks the second "death" of the Avatar. He believes he has failed.

The Dai Li bring down the walls of Ba Sing Se.

On the balcony of the Royal Plaza in the Fire Nation, Lo and Li announce the capture of Ba Sing Se, as well as the return of Prince Zuko and the death of the Avatar to the assembled armies below. They explain how Azula instructed the Dai Li to bring down a small section of the wall to allow the Fire Nation army to enter unopposed. Afterwards, soldiers are seen marching through the streets, and platoons of Fire Nation tanks roll towards the Earth Palace. Amongst the Earth Kingdom citizens shown are Iroh and Zuko's former employer Pao, Jin, and Ying and Tahn with their baby, Hope. Both Azula and Zuko appear before the crowd welcomed by rising cheers from the armies.

Meanwhile, Aang and the others run into an actual Fire Nation ship. While the others hide, Hakoda and Bato try to talk their way out, but the crew eventually finds holes in their story. The captain decides to let them think they got away, but sink the ship as soon as they are clear. Toph overhears the order, however, and swiftly drops the captain and his guards into the water by way of metalbending. Katara then puts space between the two ships with a huge waterbending attack that nearly capsizes the enemy ship, and they try to escape. Despite the tremendous efforts of Katara and Toph, the ship takes heavy damage from the pursuing Fire Nation ship. Out of sheer bad luck, the serpent of Serpent's Pass appears, but is struck by a stray fireball. The heroes get the chance to escape as the enraged serpent attacks the Fire Nation ship.

The scene changes to Zuko at the palace, feeding turtle ducks like he once did with his mother, until Azula steps in to ask him why he looks so depressed, scaring the ducks away in the process, as she used to throw things at the ducks as a child. Zuko tells her that he does not want to see his father yet because he did not capture the Avatar. Azula reassures him that the Fire Lord should not care because the Avatar is supposed to be dead. She then asks him suspiciously if he thinks the Avatar is still alive. Zuko warily recalls the Spirit Oasis water that Katara had showed him, along with its special healing abilities, but he tells his sister that the Avatar could not have survived. Azula gives him a suspicious look, but eventually walks away. Later on, Fire Lord Ozai congratulates his son on a job well done and even mentions that he feels especially proud that Zuko showed ferocity in how he killed the Avatar. Zuko asks him what he heard about this, and his father responds that Azula told him that Zuko had slain the Avatar. Later that night, Zuko confronts his sister pointedly as to why she said he killed the Avatar instead of telling the truth. She answers that she wanted to make him feel better and to let him have some of the glory so Zuko would have nothing to worry about. However, she also implies that, should the Avatar be found alive, whoever was responsible for not killing him, would face Ozai's wrath. In essence, Zuko is her scapegoat.

Docking at a port, Aang confesses to Katara he feels ashamed that everyone thinks he is dead and that he failed to stop the infiltration at Ba Sing Se. After giving into a burst of rage, he asks Katara to leave him alone. She reluctantly leaves him to gather supplies in port. While his friends are away, he flees the ship in the hopes of infiltrating the Fire Nation alone. He makes it far, even passing a blockade of Fire Nation ships, before a storm picks up. He then uses a piece of driftwood in the water combined with his glider to make a sail-surfer. Katara returns to Aang's room with some food for him, only to find it vacant; she immediately realizes what has happened and rushes out of the room. She runs to her father telling him, in tears, that Aang has run away to fight alone. While he believes this is Aang's way of being brave, Katara counters, saying it is selfish and stupid, and wonders why he thinks he is the only one who can save the world and leaves them behind in the process. Hakoda soon finds out that she may be talking about him as well. Katara begins to pour her heart out to her father about the entire situation of the War and how she has missed him. Hakoda comforts Katara, telling her that he had missed her and Sokka every day since he left, and not a day went by that he did not think of them. He says that he would sit awake at night thinking about them so much that it ached.

Meanwhile, the storm becomes even more intense, with Aang ultimately losing his glider. Aang feels like a failure, thinking that he will not make it out of the storm, but Avatar Roku appears to him in a vision, apologizing for not doing anything to stop the War before it began, and encouraging Aang not to give up. Princess Yue also appears in a beam of moonlight, calming the ocean, offering her encouragement as well. With Yue's help, Aang stands on the driftwood, makes a huge tidal wave and heads off by using waterbending to power himself forward, eventually washing up on Crescent Island, where the Fire Temple once stood.

His friends find him lying on the shoreline, having split up with the Water Tribe warriors until the invasion. They tell him that they intend to travel with him, as they still need to continue his earthbending training. Toph finds his broken glider floating in the water and returns it to him. Aang decides that if he is to maintain the element of surprise, the world will have to think he is dead for the time being. He then impales the glider into the molten rock, leaving it to burn to flames.

Transcript Edit

Main article: Transcript:The Awakening

Series continuity Edit

  • The family from "The Serpent's Pass" appears while Lo and Li give a speech describing what happened in Ba Sing Se. Hope, the baby, is crying as Fire Nation soldiers march through the city to claim it.
  • This is the first episode in which Ozai's full face is observed close-up. The previous glimpse, which was from a further distance, was viewed in "Zuko Alone".
  • Jin appears in the tea shop during the Fire Nation invasion.
  • This is the last time Earth King Kuei appears in the series.
  • This is the last episode in which Aang's original glider is shown.
  • At one point Sokka says they'd crossed into the Serpent's Pass a few days ago; later the Fire Nation ship is attacked by the same sea serpent from the episode "The Serpent's Pass".
  • There is a scene in which Zuko is feeding the turtle ducks in the Fire Nation palace courtyard; and when Azula arrives, they flee. During flashbacks in the episode "Zuko Alone", it is shown that Zuko and his mother used to feed the turtle ducks together and that Azula threw rocks at them, which is why they ran away when they saw her.
  • This is the second time Aang and his friends passed through the Fire Navy blockade and came to Crescent Island, the first being in "Winter Solstice Part 2: Avatar Roku".
  • This is the third time the first scene of the opening episode of a season has taken place on a boat. In season one it was a canoe, season two a Northern Water Tribe boat, and the opening scene of season 3 takes place on a captured Fire Nation cruiser.

Goofs Edit

  • During Aang's healing session with Katara, Aang has a flashback to when Azula shot him down. While Aang is rising in the air during the flashback, his belt is missing in the first frame. The belt is also missing in "The Crossroads of Destiny".
  • When The Duke is helping Toph deflect attacks from the Fire Nation ship, he isn't touching her shoulders for the first few frames, so Toph shouldn't have known where to deflect the fireballs in mid-flight. She encountered a similar problem against airborne attacks in "The Desert".
  • When Zuko is questioning Azula on why she informed Ozai that Zuko slayed the Avatar, she gets out of bed. Then when they are done talking, Azula plops on her bed. In the next frame, she has covers on.
  • When Katara pulls the healing water out of Aang's scar, he has a flashback. One of them is where he is lying stretched out on Appa. You can see a hole over his right leg on his trousers, but when Aang is on the captured Fire Nation ship, the hole isn't there.
  • In the scene on the ship, when Aang is lounging on his bed staring at the ceiling, his right leg is noticeably smaller than his left leg. It also grows progressively larger all the way up to the point when Toph opens the door and says, "Hey, Aang".
  • In one of Aang's flashbacks, when Katara is holding Aang on Appa, her hair is blowing in the opposite direction of the wind.

Trivia Edit

  • The non-canon Chibi short Bending Battle originally aired just prior to this episode.
  • Aang acted a lot like Book 1 Zuko in this episode, thinking he had to redeem himself and that he needed his honor back. At the exact same moment Zuko thinks he has regained his honor, Aang loses it.
  • Aang uses a piece of driftwood and his glider similarly to the way people windsurf in reality.
  • Aang creates a large wave and stands on the driftwood surfing. This scene is identical to Kuruk's flashback where he is shown surfing.
  • This is the first episode in which Ember Island is mentioned. The first time Ember Island is seen is in "The Beach".
  • In the two weeks that Aang was sleeping, he is seen for the first time with hair. Also, this is the first time Sokka is seen with a full head of hair.
  • This is the last time the audience sees or hears Princess Yue. Despite this, she is mentioned at least twice in the remaining episodes.
  • In the credits for this episode, Ozai was credited as "Fire Lord". This would be rectified in future episodes, as "Fire Lord Ozai".
  • The episode is simply known as "Awakening" in the Complete Book 3 Collection's episode guide.
  • It seems odd that anyone would believe Azula's lie about Zuko killing Aang. She "killed" him with lightning, a technique that Zuko does not possess. And since Ozai believed her, it may mean that the Dai Li —the only other witnesses— also lied on her behalf, if they were even questioned at all.

  • Isn't Sokka a little short for a firebender?

  • The Zuko/Mai's kiss on a deck of the ship didn't look like their first.

  • In this episode (at least I think this is the episode), I thought it was funny (but cute) that Aang reaches the shore, and then all of a sudden the rest of the Gang shows up out of nowhere :)

  • what happened aang: i need to redeem myself, i need my honor back. (katara walks out) what should have happened aang: i need my honor back. zuko: ( walks in) : ha now ya see what it feels like, losing your honor mwahahahahahaaa!!!

  • For anyone who doesn't know, there's a comic that tells what happen during the weeks when Aang was unconcious.http://nl.avatar.wikia.com/wiki/The_Bridge hope you like reading it :]

  • If aang was in the spirit world how was there a bunch of light and how did he rise up

  • Anyone think Zuko and Azula look too small in that armour? They wear it for most of the season.. not first choice to fight in. I wonder if they were forced to wear it, or if they chose too.

  • What if toph heard wrong an sunk the captain and and those two guys for nothing? lol

  • I think this was a strong episode to start off the last book, but I found Aang's actions a bit selfish. That's probably been one of his stupidest decisions yet to try and take on the Firelord by himself, all while he was still badly hurt. Eh, just my opinion. An I'm definitely not used to seeing him with hair.

    • Yeah; I know. It's both a selfish and a selfless act on Aang's part. The reason I say selfless, is because if he fights alone, he's not going to risk bringing harm to those he loves. He doesn't want to put her (or others) in danger. He'll face it himself, tough it out, so others won't have to.

Buuuut. He just can't do that. (even though he DOES fight the Fire Lord alone in the end..) - Shame he ran off like that...I still think it was awful convenient (glares at Bryke) that they found him immediately when they went looking for him. Gee, an entire ocean, past a blockade, many Fire Nation islands, and they just happen to stumble upon him. What luck! -cough-

    • Yes, it's selfless that he didn't want anyone else to get hurt, but it's still mostly selfish. Sokka explained to him why they needed to keep him secret; Aang wouldn't listen. Aang is the world's last hope to defeat the Fire Nation. In his condition, he was in no way at all prepared to fight the Fire Lord. If he had died while out at sea, then he would have given up the last chance to bring their empire to an end and the world would have been doomed. It all came this close to blowing up in all of their faces; they couldn't afford to wait for the next Avatar in the cycle after Aang.
Lol I found it amusing they found him so quickly. Maybe he didn't drift too far from where their boat was?

    • They had to cross a Fire Nation blockade to reach him. The nearest island was Crescent Island, where the Fire Temple used to be where Aang first contacted Avatar Roku. This was where he washed up ashore and where they met him. I still say the whole ordeal is just a matter of "That's far too convenient" XD

And yeah; believe me I wasn't saying he wasn't being selfish. By what I said it was a mix of both, so we agree. hehe. By the end of the episode, and the start of the next, he's changed his mind and put himself aside - he will give up his position as the Avatar, to 'blend in' as requested. Now we gotta wonder - would anything be different had they not left Hakoda / ran away like this? Hmm. Katara wouldn't have learned Bloodbending, (big deal, didn't need it) and she wouldn't learn she could draw water from thin air or from plants (but she never did that again after that episode. Whyyy). Oooh, Sokka wouldn't have trained with Piandao. That'd have been bad! XD That would have nixed the final sozin's comet, because Sokka wouldn't be up to snuff and have his meteor sword to help save his and Toph's life that fateful hour.

I was just playing with a "What If" there. Obviously. =]

    • It was too convenient. xD Simply checking the nearest island, and being like, "O hai, Aang" when they find him. They probably didn't want to waste a lot of time showing the group looking for him, though I think a montage could have been fun.
I like finding people that agree with me. xD With Aang, to realize he was being inconsiderate and changing his mind about their strategy was enough to satisfy me. If he ha continued to have the same attitude that he had in this episode though, I would have had a problem. Soo.. The only major downside if they had not run away is that Toph and Sokka would be dead... D:

    • It never struck me as too convenient...I always thought that the Crescent Island was the FN Island closest to the EK. According to the old Nick link, I'm pretty much right...if not the nearest, there are definitely no islands nearer, and it didn't seem like Aang would be able to get very far on his own. But feel free to disagree with me.

  • in this episode when the fire nation go through ba sing se during lo and li's speech, you can see the girl that liked zuko in the backround if the first house they show behind the man with the buting his fingernails

  • I like the group hugs - never come off as goofy, which is hard to do in a cartoon, from what I've seen.

    • You certainly are not joking there. There is so much raw emotion and heartfelt care.... that's a challenge for most any story - especially when it's a series that has a long history and - oh they've already hugged many times! "Won't it be like the last time?" Nope.... reunions. Joy. Sorrow, it's all there and so beautiful. =] Masterpiece!

  • We need an Avatar Smash Bros game!

  • When I saw Aang with hair I was like:WTF Aang has Hair, finnaly!!!

  • Am I the only one attracted to Azula in this episode? I think she looks younger and more beautiful without her makeup :)

    • Uh, just a little bit seedy but... anyway. Though yes, I do agree with you. Especially in her sleeping robe. :)

  • Wasn't it Sokka who informed Aang of what had happened between BSS and being on the ship?

  • Firelord Ozia's face is revealed

  • When lo and li make their speech does anyone think that they were acting kinda creepy I mean AND THE AVATAR FELL AND THE EARTH KINGDOM FELL!

  • I was surprised that Katara was mad at her dad in this episode.

    • Such is life....I mean, he hadn't been there in her life for several years; abandoning her to go to war. As stated by her, "I understand why" -- but she can't help but have an underlying feeling of pain due to the absence of his presence in her life. :)

    • I kinda thought her anger was sudden and unexpected. I mean, she shunned her dad when she was trying to talk to Aang.

    • by
    • Heh-heh. Methink that has to do with an overpowering "protective" feeling for Aang, she pretty much ..... solidified herself to him after he re-awoke. She missed him dearly. Plus; it's actually quite common for a teen who now has a bit of an... attraction... to be a bit defensive when parents are involved.

    • how did that first comment constitute a ":)"??

  • I love how Aang's feet don't got burnt at all when he steps on volcano with barefeet

  • Thank goodness Aang survived the lighting shot

    • Thats good

    • He didn't; and you're talking to yourself.

He died; Katara brought him back to life. Without her healing; he would have been permanently dead, along with the Avatar Spirit.

    • How's that even possible? I thought Katara can only heal wounds. And did she also brought the Avatar Spirit to life? If the Avatar's dead, the Avatar Spirit leaves, right? :|||

    • When Aang is struck by lightning, we get to see him and the Avatar spirit separately; they both fall from the plane of existence. Both passed away; separately, no longer with the living.

Katara's normal healing methods could not bring him back to life; she's not able to restore tissue/organs that are that far gone. As a last memory; she attempts to use the vial of spirit water to heal him. After initially applying it, the water fades into his body, but nothing happens. Torn by this, she clutches him closer and begins to cry.

But the spirit water's effects kicked in. We see Aang's tattoos glow briefly; the Avatar Spirit was restored, followed by Aang's slow cough as he re-awoke, gazing into Katara's eyes happily.

Katara revived both Aang and the Avatar Spirit. Had she not have been successful, that would have been the end of the Avatar for the world, no rebirthing possible, no Korra. The spirit would not have left; it would have been dead.
    • I never knew what to think when I saw him get shot down by Azula's lightning. But now I'm pretty sure he was killed and then resurrected when Katara used the water from the Spirit Oasis.

    • the spirit water is that powerful?

    • Potentially so, it would appear. I believe it has its' limits, and can't do everything. Such as, broken bones/etc, can't reposition them. Done deal/gone.

Various other things, but just speculations. Hum hum. Yes, it's potent stuff.

    • The results speak for themselves.

    • the reason y hes still alive is because katara's spirital water thingy otherwise he could have been dead......................

    • the avatar spirit doesnt immediatly go to the next avatar, some are born up to a week later. you can bring someone back from the "dead" if you start the heart back up within about 4 minutes, otherwise the brain damage would be to much, and you would stay dead

    • The Avatar wouldn't have been reborn at all, Ragnell.

    • Also, I think the transition from the catacombs to flying on Appa near the Outer Ring is more than four minutes.
