Uhmm Just wondering[]

I was just wondering, why are the avatar Characters so short? Even for the boys. I mean the only tall one is Fire Lord Ozai. Both Sokka and Zuko are of an age (16 and 17 by the end of the series) where they should be nearly fully grown. Make no mistake! I am not discriminating againist short people! I was just wondering. Newyorkme22 06:28, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, the show is based on Asian culture, so I think that played a part. Asian people tend to be a bit shorter. Another thing that may be an influence of that is the lack of blond people. Omnibender 16:15, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I only noticed Toph being short. I don't think everyone is so short.......

Omnibender, I think Newyorkme22 meant, "why are the main characters so short compared to other characters in the show." Not sure. They seem to want to emphasize that they're teens and not adults, so they've made them all relatively short. I probably grew about 5-6 inches between 15 and 20, so it's not that out of the question. (Kinowolf 01:14, 19 August 2009 (UTC))

Toph's height[]

How did you find out toph's height?

Some anonymous user has been adding them, I gave a deadline of one week to source then, he didn't and they are going to be taken down. Omnibender 16:09, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

No source given, no height put. Omnibender 21:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh ok

There's a "Nick extra", giving trivia and detalils about Toph, including her unique fighting style, and her height. You have to pause it at one moment to see the height, but it came directly from the creators, because it was an interview. Doesn't that count?

Where? Omnibender 22:18, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

She's 5'1 at about 105lbs.

Reunion with parents[]

Didn't Nick's website say Toph reunited with her parents after the war? --68.114.127.171 16:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Nope. Omnibender 00:39, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I just hope she reunited with her parents after the war. Zukofan123 18:59, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Book 3 image[]

As most of you may know, we did recently change the main image for Aang and Sokka to images from book 3. So then I thought "why not for Toph?". If somebody would like to upload a gallery of new book 3 Toph images then we could have a vote and we could change it. And I would upload the gallery myself, but I don't have the most experience with images. I'm going to suggest the same thing for Katara and we'll see where we end up! Thank you! AlexTalk 14:23, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Here we go:

I actually prefered her original one, but I suppose consistency is important. 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 15:17, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

That's it? Just one pic? Come on. A selection has to have at least three or four pics. Upload them or whatever. Without at least four pics this voting is pointless. Zero - Talk 16:19, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

There's three more. But that first one has my vote. I don't care what else we decide, that first one says it all about Toph. Puragus Talk 18:23, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

True. Absolutely, Positively True. But lets at least try to do better before we put it to an end. Zero - Talk 20:06, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Just uploaded a new version. Yeah, the only thing is, if we use it a a profile pic, we'll have to find a new pic for Toph's Day of Black Sun section. But that's not a huge problem. Maybe a pic of Toph meeting the Boulder and the Hippo again, or something with her fighting in the plaza. (Not that anything's decided yet, just getting potential issues out of the way early). Puragus Talk 05:57, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Out of the first 4, either 1 or 2, she should appear with her EK outfit, and I'm not very fond for her expression in 4, she's rarely like that. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 18:36, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

You know, the truth is: Toph looks like this and wears this for all of Book 2 and the end of Book 3. So, really, none of these images work, especially 4 (looks cool, but is just a dream Aang had), when you think about it. SuperFlash101 18:54, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

I'll upload the usual number of eight images; just give me a minute. Energybender 19:14, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

There it is, eight images. Energybender 20:00, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Except the point was to have season 3 images. 5 and 6 are from season 2. Puragus Talk 22:28, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

I'd feel bad making you work again, so should I upload two more? I already know one good one, from The Firebending Masters. Puragus Talk 22:43, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Okay then, please do that. I am currently busy on another wiki. Energybender 22:45, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Done. Puragus Talk 23:05, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

We all know these images aren't ideal (there's no nice head shot of Toph that is lit well and has her normal outfit) but I'm surprised at Image 5. It doesn't give her personality, it doesn't even show her whole head, and it doesn't even have daytime lighting so that are shown her normal colours. So why? 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 22:30, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

You know, Image 5 makes her look cute. Why not that one? Zukofan123 06:13, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

It shows her face and she's got a little smile. It's not my choice, 1 is, but I can see why other people like it. Puragus Talk 10:12, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

I think you need to recheck Image 1, because it's already used on the article. Why use it twice on the same page? Zukofan123 08:02, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

You can simply use another image for that section. That is unimportant. 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 08:13, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Let's say that this vote ends on Christmas. Everyone has one day to cast their votes if they haven't already. Energybender 18:04, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, maybe not. We have a tie as of right now. We need somebody to step up and break it (or vote for something else, but where's the fun in that?) Energybender 02:37, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Well the reason I'm not voting for Image 5 is because it seems to have too much shading, dont you think so too? Zero - Talk 08:28, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps, but it also has her in her usual clothing, with a close-up of her face, and a smile to show her good nature and happiness reflected by her personality. It just works, and stand out among the other candidates. Joey - Talk Contribs 08:45, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Let's see if this is enough to sway someone to break and vote for pic 1:
  • Image 5 is too dark. Profile images should be light enough so that we see their daytime, natural colours.
  • Image 5 is too close-up. Profile images should have her whole head so that we get a better idea of what she looks like.
  • Image 5 does not reflect her tough-guy personality.

888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 11:46, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks FireLord! I didn't think what I said would affect in any way. Now we've resolved the tie break. I say this stays open for another 24 hours, just to be sure. 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 11:55, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Are you outta your... Ahem. Pardon me. But still why cant we consider FireLord18's Vote as a sudden death. It would be simpler that way. If we keep waiting for more votes then this discussion will never get resolved. Zero - Talk 12:59, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Very well. Let's consider FireLord's vote as a sudden death. This discussion is closed. 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 13:54, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

My only question about this was why we had the original image as one of the choices if changing it is what we were doing here. The only thing that came from this vote was the realization that Image 1 really is the best Toph image in our collection. In other words, this vote had no other purpose other than to get voted on because all of the others were; it was quite a waste of time. Energybender 14:40, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Thats all irrelevent now. The important thing is that the vote is over and we have a winner. Zero - Talk 16:19, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

I know this was just resolved, but this image is really just horrible to me. It's her in a costume she wore for only 2 episodes, and no one agreeded in the other one. Someones going to say this has already been resolved and just get over it, but the previous one was perfect. I just think that when an image is good enough, why change it with another, non-relevant one. --SuperFlash101 20:09, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I kinda agree you, mostly because the image was used twice in the same article, but you are right. Zukofan123 20:16, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, Zukofan. And I didn't even realize that to was used twice, should never, ever happen. I just have a feeling someone will come and say "Uh-uh. No, no, no, this has already been decided. Sorry, just gotta get over it," or something. --SuperFlash101 20:20, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Well are there any second thoughts about the image? Zukofan123 20:25, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Do you guys take delight in trampling over the rules? Zero - Talk 21:20, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Oh, here we go again! we are not trampling over the rules we are just discussing about the image. Zukofan123 21:22, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Well we wouldn't be in this situation if someone would give it a rest already. However, we were planning on replacing the Invasion pic as soon as we could find a substitute. Thanks for bringing our attention to that detail. Good Point though. Zero - Talk 21:27, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I replaced the image in the section. If you don't like that image, you can replace it yourself. The profile image is the one that the majority of users voted on, so it doesn't matter if you don't like it, you have to put up with it. Puragus Talk 22:23, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

But don't you see how tacky it is to have the same image twice on a page. It's not just that we don't like it, it really does not make the page look better, more like worse. And I knew someone was going to say that, and there we go! --SuperFlash101 22:27, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Did you not read the part where I said that I changed the image in the section? It's not used twice any more. Puragus Talk 22:29, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Then why is it still there? I see the image and it hasn't been changed. Zukofan123 03:24, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

What Puragus meant is that the image for the DOBS section is now changed. It is suicide for anyone to change the profile picture, because it was voted on and agreed upon. I will personally start berating any user who changes it on their talk page. The Toph profile image is final and will not change. 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 03:30, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

::Well if that is how it works then I personally will not argue about this again unless there is another discussion about this. Zukofan123 03:36, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Forget what I said, I just looked up the DOBS section and thank you (Puragus) for changing the image on that section. Zukofan123 03:42, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Very good. 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 03:44, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Finally. Zero - Talk 08:39, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

I actually like the image. It makes Toph look tough and assertive, like she is. I don't think it really needs to be changed. Vaznock 18:30, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Image change[]

I would like to replace the first image for the second one. It's the same scene, just a different pic. ― Thailog 22:03, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

There might be a few objections to this one. The 888th Avatar (Talk) 22:04, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I imagine so, but in the second one you can see more of Toph and what she's doing, while in the first one you see dust, a rock and half of Toph... ― Thailog 22:23, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

All you can see in the second one is her stance. Not her bending. Better to let the first one stay even if there is dust in it. Zero - Talk 10:07, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Either work for me, though the second image appears to be of higher quality. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 15:56, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm. That is true. Zero - Talk 16:19, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

I can upload the first one with higher quality. I just didn't want to do it before you decide between the two. If the majority wants to keep the first one, I'll upload it. ― Thailog 20:48, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Why not upload the HQ version anyways? Zero - Talk 07:48, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Because capturing a DVD picture, resizing it and optimizing it is a bit of a hassle for a picture that may or may not be used. I did that for the second one because I couldn't find other versions of it on the site. ― Thailog 08:20, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Well I prefer the first one. It actually shows the bending being done. Much more informative. Zero - Talk 14:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

You're right about that. I uploaded the HQ version of the first. ― Thailog 21:16, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. Zero - Talk 03:49, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Toph's Hair[]

Hey everyone, let's talk about Toph's hair. Do you Toph's hair is kind of unique. I mean, she sure has a dense hair. She always tying it till it look rounded back. I taught, people who not seen her from the episode "The Blind Bandit" will not know it and thinks those rounded things a hat. Later in the episode "The Tales of Ba Sing Se"), when she shows her mess spiky morning hair, I realize how dense her hair. --Indra i 02:52, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Toph's character design section[]

I added to the Toph character design that Toph's original design was a big muscular man, "as foil to Sokka's nerdiness". This was removed, stating that Toph is not that and Sokka only yells at her. What they said was correct, but I wasn't talking about Toph, I was talking about Toph's original design, and what I said was in the right section. Someone else agreed to its removal by saying that they don't remember reading anywhere what I had added. It is a verbatim quote from Brian in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOJO_Lu-B7w

Please stop deleting it. Tikalal 11:33, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Oh the original design, didn't catch that. You should put a source when you add a piece of info that is unusual or unknown to most. Feel free to readd. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 21:41, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Good idea, I'll add a source now. The reason I didn't is because I didn't know how. Still don't, but I'll probably have found out and added it before anyone reads this. Tikalal 07:44, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Source added. Tikalal 08:00, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Factually Incorrect Statement[]

Under "Earthbending," it says that Toph is the only character in the show to use a bending style different from the root. I'm pretty sure this is false. The Sandbenders are Earthbenders that use a style similar to Waterbending's Tai Chi instead of the usual Hun Gar. The Sun Warriors have a distinct style from Fire Nation Firebenders. Even the Foggy Swamp Tribe has a... distinct variation on the Polar Waterbender's Tai Chi.

Wan Shi Tong even states that there are some differences between North and South waterbending as well. --MadCat221 13:04, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Headband?[]

Hi everybody, I'm a newb, but I *love* Avatar. Just wondering if anyone knows what the white puffy things are on Toph's headband? Her character, overall, seems the most anime-inspired in the show, and I feel like I've seen this elsewhere, but I can't place it. OTOH, maybe it has something to do with her hearing? That would be cool... -CKL

  • The first thing that comes to mind is those giant headphones. Anime wise, the first thing that comes to mind are to outfits Tomoyo made for Sakura when she had to capture a Clow Card in Card Captor Sakura. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 23:36, February 15, 2010 (UTC)

Vision of her in the Swamp[]

If she does not die, why does Aang see a vision of her in the swamp? From what I took from it, "Time is an illusion, like death" meant that she will die. Did her fate change midway in the show or was the vision meant to show that Aang will meet her (and she will not die early)? -- AzemOcram 04:20, March 3, 2010 (UTC)

This is how I think of it: time is an illusion. Katara and Sokka both saw people who they knew that had died. Aang saw someone he had not met yet, so the cycle was reversed for him. So instead of dying, she was just "born" into his life I guess... I don't know, there's probably a better explanation out there. Waterbent 05:19, March 3, 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for that prompt and insightful response. -- AzemOcram 05:21, March 3, 2010 (UTC)

The in-story explanation was that since time is an illusion and Aang had never met the girl before, it was someone he would meet. In a sense it was like seeing into the future because what they perceive as time is simply an illusion. Katara and Sokka saw someone important from their past while Aang saw someone important from his future. Ddd44 06:36, March 3, 2010 (UTC)

Some Minor things?[]

1 in "The Desert" Toph made another joke about her blindness, however, it isn't mentioned. She says out loud "There it is!!!" as everyone looks she comments "Thats what it will sound like when one of you spots it" then sarcasticly waves her hand around her face to imply she's blind much to everyones distress

2 i'd like to add to the trivia how her name means "Protected Lotus" and how she got along with Iroh so much.

3 What about Joo dee and Long Feng? they too (To some extent) have last names?

No, they just have two-part names, like Ty Lee.

Trivia[]

I noticed that in the Trivia section, it says that Toph is the only female Earthbender shown in the series other than Avatar Kyoshi and Omu. But Avatar Yangchen is an Avatar, so she's also an Earthbender. I know that we've never actually seen her Earthbend, but we do know that she can, since she's an Avatar. I didn't want to just change it cos I'm not sure what the policy is. She has to be a fully realized Avatar, because she is shown to have mastered the Avatar state. -KonohaSunaKiriKumoIwa (talkcontribs) 22:56, July 5, 2010 (UTC)

You're right. Some women earthbenders are seen in "The Fortuneteller". Dcasawang1 - Talk 23:11, July 5, 2010 (UTC)
Oma is also a female Earthbender, as she is shown and exercised the skill in the show "The Cave of Two Lovers."

Actress Rumor[]

I heard a rumor that her actress will not be Chloe MoretzKataraTophAzula (talkcontribs) 03:04, July 6, 2010 (UTC)

This is a false rumor. Moretz is booked for about the next two years in films, so it would be impossible for her to dedicate herself to film a dynamic main character such as Toph. Based off imdb.com, she has about 5 movies in the works. :(

Personality![]

I think it should be added to the personality insert that Toph does inhabit some insecurities besides proving her independence. For one, in "Tales of Ba Sing Se" it is made apparent that Toph holds a level of depression that due to her blindness she does not know how she looks in comparison to what is attractive or not. Though she says being blind has taught her not to put imagery on a high level, she becomes obviously upset when her looks are presented in an insulting manner ( such as Star did ) but also found relief when Katara reassured her that she was a beautiful woman later in the same episode. Finally, in "The Runaway" Toph also reveals that though she resented her upbringing and over-protective lifestyle she still experienced agony from the dysfunctional relationship she had with her parents. This concept is first brought to our attention in "The Earth King" and "The Guru" when she becomes overjoyed to find out that her mother was in town looking for her ( which ended up being a trap, but nonetheless... ). The fact that Toph shows these two insecurities adds depth to her character and proves the well-known fact that even if someone is thick skinned they still are emotional -- knowing this, when I saw her cry in "Avatar Aang" as she hangs onto her dear life, proved that Toph is more than just an over enduring young girl, but also her emotions are as strong as her exterior. Let me know what you think about this!

Prince Azula http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/yeahthatboy/azula-dobs-c1.gif 10:43, September 11, 2010 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I for one would agree with you on the issues you brought up, and I like the way you phrased it "Toph is more than just an over enduring young girl, but also her emotions are as strong as her exterior". (Although Katara never said Toph was a beautiful woman...what she did say was "I know it doesn't really matter, but you're very pretty". And yes, I am a nitpicker). I'm not sure whether me saying this will help you any, though. Metalarmor Talk 0 Edits! 14:47, August 29, 2011 (UTC)

Image Change again![]

I know this was talked about before, but I really do think this image should be changed. She only wore this for only two episodes. I have a picture that I think we should use. It's just a capture, but it's from the Crossroads of Destiny where Sokka and Toph are fighting Mai and Ty Lee.Ibrahim77 (wallcontribs) 01:22, December 27, 2013 (UTC)

Tense[]

Apparently deceased characters like Aang are described in the past tense. But Toph is not confirmed to be deceased. Every sentence not telling her history, thus general statements, should be written in present tense. Someone had already removed Toph's status "deceased" some time ago. Why not complete the work? -Darjeeling- (wallcontribs) 17:54, August 8, 2014 (UTC)

You are right, so I took liberty of correcting this. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 18:21, August 8, 2014 (UTC)

Toph Lavabending[]

In the final scene of Book 4, episode 3 in "Legend of Korra", we saw Toph cooking over a hot substance that clearly wasn't fire as it didn't move. Can we assume that at someone point in her life, Toph learned Lavabending? It has also been confirmed since Book 3 that Lavabending is an advanced Earthbending skill. It would also make sense since she can control the heat without it going wild like fire would.—Steveo920 (Talk) 21:14, October 24, 2014

"Would make sense" and "assume" are not things we base our articles on here at the Avatar Wiki. We report on facts, so unless it is clearly stated or shown that Toph can lavabend, we don't report on it. Lady Lostris / 9?cb=20210808202057 SOAP 10:02, October 25, 2014 (UTC)
