I just thought of this b/ce when Iroh escapes during Day Of Black Son there are scortch/burn marks on the wall. Could it be possible that Iroh was able to bend? When Haru, his father and the other Earthbenders are capturing the capital there is that guy who tries 2 bend but there is just a little spark. So I thought since Iroh is an expert bender it is possible, let me know what all of you think.

Iroh isn't an Earthbender. Haru and his father are. What are you talking about?65.92.117.56 02:02, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I think what he/she tried to say is if there is any way Iroh could have used Firebending to escape. I don't think there was. I think that he might have used Firebending to break out of his cell as the eclipse started, but after it kicked in, he just fought his way out. Omnibender 02:49, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, what I ment was that when Haru, his father, and the other earthbenders were at the capital there was a small froup of Firebenders and one of the firebenders tried to bend but there was a small little poof.Avatar Sanders

But I thought he used his newly gained strength to bust out Felinoel 04:36, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Until Iroh says/shows how he did it himself, we might never know. I think that the scorch marks might actually be from guards who didn't know about the eclipse, and tried to bend, and when only a few sparks came off, they went "Oh noes!!!". Omnibender 16:34, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Odd, I thought I remembered his prison bars being bent, I will have to rewatch that episode Felinoel 16:37, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps he made his escape moments before the eclipse so that the firebenders would be too distracted during the eclipse to chase him. Maybe he knew that he could take the guards but didnt want Ozai to send troops after him. Zero 05:02, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

I still think I remember the bars being bent... Felinoel 00:37, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

I wasnt talking about the bars. I was talking about the scorch marks on the prison walls. Zero - Talk 09:02, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

My guess is that he used firebending to weaklen the bars so that he could escape. Then he probobly used firebending a little waiting for the eclipce. Scott (Lets Chat) 14:10, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

So he did bend the bars? felinoel ~ (Talk) 16:48, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I think that would require a lot of physical strength, more than the considerable strength Iroh had developed by that point. My guess is that he might have used Firebending to weaken, or possibly break the bars (Azula used fire to cut stone more than once), maybe a bit when the guards came to see what was happening, and then brawling his way out. Omnibender 22:11, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Cutting stone with fire is one thing, but metal? I don't know... felinoel ~ (Talk) 22:17, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Metal does conduct hear more easily than most materials, maybe the torn parts had a "melted" portion at the ends? Omnibender 23:39, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

I may be wrong, but I was watching the audio commentary for that scene the other day. I think Bryan said Iroh used some kind of kung fu technique, I can't remember the name, but that said technique allowed him to break out or bend the bars. I'll have to watch it again and find some info on that technique that Bryan mentioned. General Iroh 00:08, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Or he could have used lightning to break or weaken them. Like Omni said metal conducts heat easily and expands and weakens if heated so he could have heated it up then broked out while the bard were red hot. The same way that a blacksmith would shape and strenthen a sword. Scott (Lets Chat) 00:34, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Ah maybe I was watching the commentary of the episode and rememebred they said Iroh bent the bars and just thinking back on it remember the bars being shown bent felinoel ~ (Talk) 01:14, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Profile proposition[]

Since we're officially changing all the character's profiles to season 3 ones, I'd like to propose this one for Iroh. I realize it's not the jolly old man we're used to seeing, but I think there are some very good Iroh traits that are shown in this picture. The expression on his face is very wise, but it's also gentle. At the same time, it's serious, since he's taking on a leadership role, so it shows the side of him that's a General. Plus, he's in his Order of the White Lotus uniform, which is how we saw him in the finale. I like it. What do people think? Puragus Talk 04:02, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

I like it too. But we should have a larger variety to choose from. Its always better that way. Zero - Talk 04:14, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, that's not what we did with Azula, but if people can find some, sure. Iroh's not very prominent in Season 3 (for an obvious reason. Very sad, but what else would you do? Greg Baldwin never sounded quite right, although he gets an A for effort). Most Iroh closeups I've seen are either from this scene (basically this, except with his mouth open or head turned slightly to the side), or him in prison (which I hate the idea of, because Iroh's in a dark place in those scenes). But, If it can be done, by all means. Puragus Talk 04:20, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Does it have to be season 3? Zero - Talk 04:27, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

That's what we're doing for every other page, soooo...yes? Puragus Talk 04:29, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Oh... OK. Zero - Talk 04:30, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

The first one certainly. This is much less of a debate than the Katara profile pic! 888th Avatar - Talk - Contributions 06:56, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

I think one too, but if he didn't have the "I'm going to kick your ass" face in three I'd go with that. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 20:04, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Changes needed[]

These things should be corrected (I can't do them myself, the article is protected to admin level):

  • The dates need to be changed as per the new year system (BSC/ASC).
  • The episode listing in the quote box should be in italics for consistency with other pages.

Thanks. The 888th Avatar - Talk 09:35, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

The protection will expire in 4 days. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 11:52, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

I know, and Zero has already corrected the quote box. I just wanted the dates changed quickly, this is rather an important article. The 888th Avatar - Talk 11:54, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

It's been five days (it's the ninth) and it's still protected. --SuperFlash101 21:53, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Comic Image[]

I think that image from the comic of Iroh meditating needs to be removed. It doesn't show anything that the next image doesn't show, and it looks really awkward next to the other images, since it crowds the page and it's so small. Puragus Talk 00:03, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Ya, we probably should get rid of it. The 888th Avatar (Talk) 00:05, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I got a question... Why is there a big hole where there is nothig written in the History part? OrderOfTheWhiteLotus

I'm sorry, but I don't quite get what you're saying. The biggest section in the article is devoted to Iroh's history... Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 02:33, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

I meant there was white square. With no writing on it. Like half a page with nothing written on it. Isn't it the same on your computer OrderOfTheWhiteLotus

Oh, I know what you mean now. Most big articles have this big space to the right of the table of contents. I wouldn't worry too much about that, it's more natural to have that gap between the intro and the main content than to not. The table of contents will be smaller in the near future anyway when we split the history section from the article. Wjxhuang, the 888th Avatar {Talk} 09:57, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Dragon Of the West ( inconsistency )[]

1) Iroh later claimed that he had fought and killed the last surviving dragon in order to preserve what was left of the species and to ensure that the Sun Warriors remained undisturbed. For this, he was showered with glory in the Fire Nation and awarded the title of "Dragon of the West".

2) Furthermore, he has his famous "Breath of Fire," which resembles a dragon breathing flames on its opponent, giving him the nickname "The Dragon of the West".

Could we choose one of the two reasons of why he is the dragon of the west or are we going to use both? OrderOfTheWhiteLotus

  • From what was said by Zuko, the killing of the last dragon only got Iroh the title "Dragon", "of the West" appears to be a reference to the geographical location of the Fire Nation, it's possible that in the Fire Nation he's known as Dragon because of the killing of the dragon and in the Earth Kingdom because of the technique, I find it unlikely that people in the Earth Kingdom would know about Fire Nation customs and honorary titles. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 22:02, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok I accept that answer :D OrderOfTheWhiteLotus

My god omni! i just remembered. I saw the episodes once again to try to improve this page and saw a problem. In the episode Sokka's master the prison guard calls Iroh The Dragon Of the West. So he is still the Dragon Of The West in his country as well which means... the reasons were the same in both nations earth and fire therefore we should choose one of the reasons? Did anyone understand me? OrderOfTheWhiteLotus

I never said that the "of the West" was from the Earth Kingdom, nothing indicates that "ofW" couldn't have come from the Fire Nation as well. Plus, it's always possible that during the war and his campaign in it, he became known to both countries by the same name, regardless of its origin. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 17:51, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Ok OrderOfTheWhiteLotus

Imo, Dragon of the West is the title General Iroh gained from "slaying" the last dragon (according to the fire nation custums), and not because of his "Breath of fire" - technique. When he used the reference (in ba sing se) "Did you ever wonder how i got the name; Dragon of the west" (followed by his breath of fire) - he didn't refer to his actual title, "Dragon", but used it as a wordplay (since its common knowledge that dragons breathe fire). - But since he was the fire nation general who laid seige to Ba Sing Se, then of course the earth kingdom would know of his title/nickname. >>TheBalance<<

To note... the people of the Earth Kingdom even knew of this title for Iroh. Think of the episode "Winter Solstice, Part 1" - the Earthbender Captain called Iroh the Dragon of the West, in memorial to his great 600 day siege of Ba Sing Se. So, it would seem his title is known world-wide. Vulmen (talkcontribs) 00:32, February 25, 2011 (UTC)

Trivia Section[]

I edited the Trivia section to include Iroh calling Zuko "Prince Zuko" in the episode "The Tales of Ba Sing Se". I also speculated as to why he reverted to calling him "Prince Zuko" once more (the fact a guest writer scripted the vignette). I hope this is alright. DrSteveBrule 09:38, September 17, 2009 (UTC)

Actually, upon skimming several Book 2 episodes, I've found it pretty common that Iroh refers to Zuko as "Prince Zuko" so perhaps this trivia item might be removed altogether? DrSteveBrule 10:44, September 17, 2009 (UTC)

I also think the note about him never being in the same place as Ozai is incorrect. He was in Ozai's war room when Zuko spoke out of turn, and was watching his Agni Kai with Zuko. They were really close at those times. Maybe it should be changed to Iroh has never been seen interacting with Ozai. --I'm The Bos - Got something to say? - Read Guardian! 22:09, October 7, 2009 (UTC)

I edited the part where is says that Iroh and Ozai have never been in the same place together, but om the The storm episode when it tell that Zuko got his burnt scar he witness Ozai doing it to Zuko, therefore being in the same place at the same time.

I think the trivia meant it at the present in the series, but we can point out that it's a flashback. Omnibender - Talk - Contributions 19:35, December 8, 2009 (UTC)

uncle iroh in the movie[]

Iroh's profile picture.[]

Let's keep it short and concise.

Iroh's profile picture is depressing. It doesn't suit him. I propose the following:

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/hakuna_matata3713/Iroh.png

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/hakuna_matata3713/Iroh2.png

Those are the only two images that are of good quality and can serve as decent profile pictures. I quite like the first one. It's head-on, has the specifications needed, shows him in OWL costume and has Iroh's determination in the facial expression. Better in my opinion.

The second I added just for the sake of seeing whether others like it.

Oh, and with regards to Vulmen's comment, I did some lighting tweaking on the image and this is the result:

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s33/hakuna_matata3713/Iroh-1.png

I personally think that the difference in his coloration and the background makes the picture better. But that's just me.

Go crazy voting :)

New picture for Iroh's profile[]

Can we change Iroh's picture? The current one is totally non-representative of his character. The expression on his face and the comet's extreme lighting are seen only once, briefly, in the final episode of the series. It's as bad as if we used the weird shot of the shirtless Iroh after bodybuilding in prison! The current picture is a non-sequitur, it's actually misleading. I feel that the pic below (or any like it) would be far more appropriate because it would express his character for 59 of the episodes, rather than just showing what he looked like in 1 episode. Does this make sense?

P.S. The image from the discussion above that wasn't selected would also be more appropriate than the one currently in use.

There has been, for a long time, a convention on this wiki that we use screenshots from the latest season for all of the characters, providing that they are a fairly accurate representation of the character's entire face and preferably, the nature of their personality. Iroh's current profile picture satisfies this criteria. In general, the images we use on this wiki are also not out of dimension. They can be cropped, but the cropped image must fit the original TV screen dimensions. Of course, I'm not telling you that you can't attempt to change that convention - I'm only informing you that under the current conventions, your image is inconsistent with the others in use around the wiki. :) The 888th Avatar (talk) 11:10, January 3, 2011 (UTC)
I do not think the current picture represents the nature of his personality nor the appearance of his face. He looks mean in his current image, and I do not see him as a mean character.
I am open to suggestions, and any appropriate image from season 3 is fine, but the current image fails according to the above criteria.

Relationships Section[]

Here, it says that iroh is Aang's spiritual grandfather-in-law. He's not. Ursa was OZAI'S wife, and therefore Aang is his spiritual grandfather. Not Iroh. In fact, I'm not sure that Iroh being (kinda) related to Aang is that huge, and therefore, I think that Aang should be removed all together. My name is monster Rancher the Great and I like the episode city of walls and secrets because of the ending.(talk)

It would be more notable had it not been "in law" listed. So; yeah not very needed. And - change your signatures font please... that is impossible to read and hard on the eyes. Vulmen (talkcontribs) 01:35, April 2, 2011 (UTC)

Iroh's Invented Tea[]

In the article, it says first that he invented tapioca. Then, down in the trivia, it says that he invented milk tea. Both are wrong, as the tea he describes to have invented is bubble tea (the 'tapioca pearls' are the dead give away). Can we please change this?

He never actually named the drink, he just said that it was a beverage containing milk tea and cooked balls of tapioca, so I changed it to fit this description. Age/Death/Words[]

I'm not a big fan of assuming but by his words, "it's been 40 years since...," and the article, now as of this post, stating "By 131 ASC...," is it safe to assume that he died in 131 ASC (at age 96) or are we just going to leave that parameter left alone? --KiumaruHamachi (wallcontribs) 19:39, November 16, 2013 (UTC)KiumaruHamachi

He said "almost 40 years," but I think it's safe to assume that he died around age 96, & this would be worth noting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Neo Bahamut (wallcontribs) 13:00, November 17, 2013
Assumptions are not proof. Any date derived from "almost 40 years" would be speculative, and we cannot be sure that he died around this age. Who's to say he didn't live a few more years after that meeting? So, unless we receive any more information, it should be left blank. HAMMEROFTHØR (wall) • 13:24, November 17, 2013 (UTC)
