From Avatar Wiki, the Avatar: The Last Airbender database
The Spiderfly was first mentioned in Sozin's Comet, Part 2: The Old Masters by Aang talking to Yangchen. It is an insect most likely based on the common spider, and fly. Apparently, it creates it's own web, and is known to sometimes catch itself in it by accident. They most likely use this web to capture their prey; of smaller insects. Spiderflys were not shown on-screen.
