But why would it be so odd having the Earthbender be the father the Firebender being his mother? That's how genetics works, you get stuff from both your mother and your father, doesn't matter who got it from, you're still going to get it from one or the other....so why would having an Earthbending father and Firebending mother be so odd...I'm very confused here

As might be expected, Chinese [specially ancient] always found important to make inner spaces mirror the outer spaces and vice-versa.

For example, a good house must be aligned with the surrounding nature/environment, a city must have its quarters perfectly set,etc etc

The interior of a house follows the same, for example. Another example is the tomb of a ruler, which would be arranged on the correct direction, etc.

This is an important principle of the Feng Shui [wind and water] which was/is considered by western experts as some kind of "Geomancy" [to read/divine the earth] as this chinese practice involves harmonizing the Qi/C'hi flow by setting properly "earthly" objects [things we can see, such as houses,etc] and arrange them to make the Qi flow better and all that.

Directions [east,west,south,north and the Center], colors, height, width,etc all are important on the Feng Shui, as all objects possess its own energy and power and could make the Qi flow better or worse.

Each direction is associated with an element [fire,water,metal,wood and earth] too, AND each element is associated with an color, for example, Fire = Red. (Water = Black because "Blue" represents the heavens, for example).

The Yijing [I-CHING] is a book that explains some forms of divination using the trigram symbols, the Ba Gua and overall it is considered by some as a method of geomancy as well.

The trigrams are used on divination and the set of oracular statements are arranged according to those trigram symbols. there are eight trigrams, and overall 64 combinations, each one with its own meaning, interpretation and symbolism.

The Banliang coin, famous round coin with square hole is associated with chinese currency even nowadays, where the currency is terribly westernized and features no longer the square hole.

This shape was made in the Qin dynasty, to represent the new nationwide currency after China was united.

The Round "circle" represents Heaven. The square represents Earth. so both forms in one [a circle outside, a square outside] represent together Heaven and Earth, and the world itself.

So that's why the coin has that shape. as a "bonus" that square-ish 'hole' can be used to string coins together, making them easier to count when compared to other coins.

If Earth = square, Heavens = round this means that a form that encompass both [round circle with square inside] represents basically EVERYTHING.

The Worship of Heaven and Earth is very important on imperial days, and the Emperor had this commitment to the empire, and regional governors, lords, ministers,etc also. common people also worship but on local temples,etc.

Ceremonies of soil and grain were important, and the term "soil and grain" (sheji) was even use to represent the state overall.

Some local rulers, or the Emperor during unified periods built those temples and altars of soil and grain to affirm their authority also. They were so important that most of them were built nearby the Ancestor temples/altars, as the ancestors are very important and are part of the chinese worship system.

The Mountains, tall and strong are also object of worship in traditional chinese culture, they represent the "bridge" between heaven and earth, acension, power and firmness and where some of the powerful Dragons live.

Several temples were built nearby/on top of sacred mountains and others to pay respect to said mountains. Many comparisons and discussions were made citing mountains as reference, for example the famous Confucian ideal of "administrate on good times, retire on the mountains during messy/troubled times" and the "two tigers cannot share the same mountain".

They are a utmost important part of chinese culture [reverence to mountains,etc] and naturally this extends outside religion/rituals, and goes even to art. one of the most famous kind of chinese art is the "shanshui", meaning Mountain and rivers/water.

This also has to do with Jade, since Jade is the stone of the heavens and jade is associated with the gods. (after all one can find jade on the mountains/down the soil, not on some stupid factory EH? =] )

Jade is VERY important, to the point it is most times easily associated with Chinese culture.

Jade posseses several meanings such as perfection, authority, cleaness, immortality. It is so associated with the upper class that it was said that a true "gentleman" (in fact the 'shi' = gentry, chinese ruling class) virtue should be unwavering and clear as jade.

The round 'bi' and square 'cong' shaped jades are used by these nobles according to their rank, so the number,form,etc of jade ornaments, and even the quantity of jade beads in ones Mian Guan [ceremonial hat] determine their place/status [the greatest amount is used by the Emperor, for example].

Important both in life and death, it is said that while jade serves as a symbol of moral integrity for the living, it also accompanies the deceased to calm and confort their souls. thus explaining why jade ornaments and jadeware are often found on the tombs of important people.

They were also used as ceremonial objects during certain rituals and sacrifices. from ritual utensils up to everyday items for nobility [such as combs,Guan hairpins,etc] jade is of the utmost importance.

That's everything I wanted to add for the time being, and I hope this long explanation of some chinese ideology and ancient mindset could make people learn more about the ancient days and to some extent how this can be used as inspiration to the

avatar world we're all wanting to watch.

Mine is Woodbending. It applies waterbending in slow, carefull amounts to bend the water inside the wood so that the wood will move without snapping. It is similar to vinebending, but requires great control. It is the opposite of bloodbending is that it is slow and gentle, not rough an painfull. Well, as far as I see it, you are correct in assuming that fire is a destructive element, because there isn't much it can do in defence. Except dodge. That's how a firebender would avoid capture - use Firebending to accelerate physical movement. Need examples? Throughout both LoK and TLA, firebenders are seen flying with jets of flame. Dive sideways, bend through arm and leg, bam, horizontal motion. Generate a small jet of flame on the other foot, and you have lift. A firebender unwilling to harm the metalbending police would have to dodge, or resort to close-combat, which the Equalists proved is possible. Yes, it's an Air strategy, but Fire is aggressive. Violent. Most Firebenders have incredibly aggressive personalities, and the ones who didn't (Jeong Jeong and Iroh, to name two) were master firebenders with training in other forms of combat. Iroh could fight without his powers, as seen when he disarmed the mugger, and when he broke out of prison. Jeong Jeong was adept at creating walls of fire, which he used to block TANKS and BURN ON TOP OF WATER. Not many benders can claim that.

I think that if anybody gets magnetism, it should be the Avatar. It should need conjuntion between lightning and earth to work, as well as that little bit of spiritual mumbo jumbo that the Avatar doe so well. Minus Korra.

Btw, ever thought of the possibility that some artist may actually deliberately add in some "color noise" to prevent their image of coming across completely . . . what's the word, uniform? It are disruptions in the coloring that can give off subtle distinctions that can give a certain amount of depth to an image.
