Sea prunes

Bato made a pot of stewed sea prunes for Aang, Katara, and Sokka during their stay at the abbey.

The sea prune is a small fruit which is purple in color and grows in the ocean. In traditional Water Tribe cuisine, it is dried and boiled to make a chunky brown stew said to have an acquired taste.[1]

History

Bato prepared a traditional Water Tribe feast of sea prunes for Sokka, Katara, and Aang upon encountering them near an abbey, much to the siblings' delight. Aang tried the fruit for the first time, but immediately spat it out, disgusted by its taste.[1]

Connections

The sea prune bares a similarity to the sea cucumber, an echinodermic ocean-bottom scavenger. However, the sea cucumber is an animal, while the sea prune must not be meat since Aang, a vegetarian, was willing to try them and neither Sokka nor Katara warned him that they were not compatible with his diet.[2]

Trivia

  • According to Sokka, Hakoda could eat a "whole barrel" of stewed sea prunes.[1]
  • According to Hama, ocean kumquats taste similar to sea prunes if stewed properly.[2]
