Not much is known about this character, however, we do know that he was a citizen of the Earth Kingdom. He trained Avatar Roku in the art of Earthbending, teaching him the techniques of a master Earthbender. Roku eventually mastered Earthbending under his tutelage, and beat his teacher in a race up a mountain by surfing on the earth. By the time his teacher had reached to top of the hill, Roku was already sitting there brewing a pot of tea. Sud laughed, and they sat down to enjoy the hot beverage. By the time Roku finished his training, he was a fully realized Avatar, able to control all four elements at will. Roku seemed to enjoy learning Earthbending, as it was not his opposite element.

[edit] Notes

  • Sud bears resemblance to the shadowed Earthbender in the opening sequence, who was confirmed by Mike and Brian to be an early version of Toph. It is possible that the early stages of her development were reused on this character.
  • Sud is the French, Spanish and Italian word for "south". The writers probably did this because Roku learned the four elements in order: Fire, Air, Water, Earth, therefore Roku went to the Southern Air Temple, then the Northern Water Tribe, then lastly he traveled south, towards the Earth Kingdom to train with Sud. Also, to be "south" is to be resistant to change or not very open to new ideas about things due to their pride, which is how earthbending works. This is different to being "north", which is to be open to change and willing to change; this is how waterbending works. These two notions are paraphrased by Iroh in "Bitter Work", when he explains the philosophy of the four nations to Zuko. It also makes him a counterpart to Toph, who's last name (Bei Fong) means "north".
