Personal life[]

Riehle was born in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, the son of Mary Margaret (née Walsh), a nurse, and Herbert John Riehle (1921–61), an assistant postmaster. He attended the University of Notre Dame.

Career[]

At Notre Dame, Riehle became involved with the University Theatre, appearing in productions such as Luther, Romeo and Juliet, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and also taking on the role as stage manager during productions. After spending time at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Rochester, Michigan, he moved on to Broadway and debuted in 1986 in the production of Execution of Justice. In 1999, Riehle had a major film role as drunken, corrupt, ex-cop Pat McGloin in the acclaimed revival of The Iceman Cometh. He has also worked with the Adams-Jefferson Project of Carleton College, participating in the a series of recordings of the correspondence between the two United States presidents.

Riehle has maintained his involvement in theater workshops and encouraging the dramatic arts under the auspices of the Mark Taper Forum and A.S.K. However, since his scene-stealing cameo as the Quartermaster in 1989's Glory, with his trademark bushy mustache and heavyset frame, he has acquitted himself as one of the best and busiest character players on television and in movies.

Trivia[]

  • Riehle was considered for the role of Cliff Clavin on the television series Cheers.
