Republic City, the capital of the United Republic of Nations, is a large metropolis on the shores of Yue Bay.[1] It is located in the northwestern Earth Kingdom near the Mo Ce Sea. A colony of the Fire Nation during the Hundred Year War, the city was founded by Fire Lord Zuko and Avatar Aang after the conflict's conclusion as a settlement housing citizens from all four nations.[2] A modern urban center, it has significant high-rise development, notable technological advancements, and widespread use of automobiles, motorcycles, and airships.[3]

Republic City is home to a variety of iconic landmarks. These include an island with a massive statue of Avatar Aang looking out over the bay, which was a gift from the Fire Nation to stand as a symbol of peace and goodwill,[4] a downtown station,[5] a large and popular city park, suspension bridges, and skyscrapers. The police force, led by Chief Lin Beifong, utilizes metalbending for civil law enforcement. The vast metropolis conducts pro-bending matches; the city's number one form of sporting activity.

During Avatar Korra's youth, Republic City faced high levels of crime and an anti-bender revolt led by the Equalists.[6]

History Edit

In the aftermath of the Hundred Year War, Team Avatar, led by Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko, came to an agreement with Earth King Kuei on the establishment of the Harmony Restoration Movement, which would return the Fire Nation colonies to the jurisdiction of the Earth Kingdom. One of the consequences of this action was the relocation of Fire Nation citizens from the settlements they had created over the past century. This order of removal had considerable negative demographic consequences not considered by any of the parties to the agreement. A year into the operation of the movement, Zuko withdrew his support after being accused of being a traitor, precipitating a confrontation with his friend, the Avatar.[7]

After a narrow avoidance of war, Aang and Zuko eventually resolved this impasse by not removing the Fire Nation colonies, but regulating the balance of power by creating a fifth nation separate from the original four. This new nation would be a society open to anyone from the four nations, who would be able to reside in, and be governed by a council with representatives from each of the four nations. They named this new nation the United Republic of Nations, and established Republic City as its capital at a location in the northwestern Earth Kingdom.

Republic City takes on a more dangerous feel at night.
Lady LostrisAdded by Lady Lostris

With the resources of all four nations, Republic City rapidly developed into a metropolis over the next seventy years. Despite being a city directly established for political considerations rather than an evolution of an original settlement, its population and sophistication increased beyond reasonable expectation, growing the number of vagabonds around Republic City.

However, the city has not been without internal strife. Forty-two years before Avatar Korra arrived in the city, an individual by the name of Yakone threatened the city before being dealt with by Avatar Aang.[8]

As of 170 ASC, Republic City began to experience demographic and political problems as a direct consequence of its nature as a large city. Organized crime became rampant and an anti-bending revolution arose. The city also started facing issues with wealth inequality among the citizens.[9]

Cityscape Edit

Dcasawang1Added by Dcasawang1

In contrast to the other major cities of the Earth, Republic City is a true modern urban center. The city has developed the architectural sophistication to construct taller buildings, and there is significant high-rise development. Stylistically, the city generally incorporates traditional ornamentation with far more advanced structural techniques, but there are some departures from what is considered traditional, such as City Hall and the Bending Arena. Despite this, there are still landmarks in the traditional style, such as Air Temple Island.

From phonographs to fish jerky, downtown Republic City is a cultural melting pot of shops and stands featuring goods from all four nations.[10]

City Hall Edit

The City Hall is a center for governance in Republic City, and is also a venue for public press conferences and gatherings, with a large square before its front doors. It is here that the new Avatar, Korra, made her maiden official appearance.[9] While the public building has an entrance typical of traditional architecture from the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation, its distinctive features, a large dome and four corner towers, is certainly a new style developed after the Hundred Year War.

Located in Yue Bay, Air Temple Island is the home of Tenzin and his family, and is therefore residence of one of the most powerful governing figures of Republic City. The temple was originally built by Avatar Aang himself.[1] Comprised of several structures, including a large tower, several smaller buildings with blue roofs, and an open practice area, the Air Temple Island is home to Tenzin, his wife Pema, and their three children Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo.

Police headquarters Edit

The police headquarters, often referred to simply as "Headquarters", is the base of operations for the metalbending police, and is where criminals and misfits in Republic City are taken in for arrest. The architecture of the police headquarters is comparable to that of standard Earth Kingdom buildings, with both the exterior and the interior being largely geometrical in design. Headquarters is overseen by Chief Lin Beifong, who firmly believes in military strength and is displeased at the challenge to her authority represented by Korra's arrival.[11]

Aang Memorial Island Edit

Main article: Aang Memorial Island

Aang Memorial Island is a small island off the coast of Yue Bay, located nearby Air Temple Island. It features a massive sculpture of Avatar Aang created by the Fire Nation some years after the end of the Hundred Year War for display in the bay of Republic City, where it would stand as a symbol of peace and goodwill.[1] It depicts an older Aang clad in traditional Air Nomad attire, with the accompanying necklace he wore when Fire Lord Zuko announced the War's end at his coronation.

Republic City Park Edit

Typical of other public construction achievements in Republic City, the city park is also on a large scale. Located in the city center peninsula, the city park is landscaped, with small hills, deciduous trees shading impeccably kept grass, and fine stone arch bridges. Unfortunately, due to the poverty of a large number of Republic City citizens, the city park has also become a place popular with vagabonds such as Gommu, whom Korra meets soon after her initial arrival in the city. It is known that fishing in the park is prohibited.

Bending Arena Edit

Pro-bending is the most popular sport in Republic City, and official pro-bending matches are held in the city's Bending Arena. As a testament to the sport's popularity, this building has a golden appearance and is lit at night, making it a prominent city landmark. The arena is spacious enough to hold the pro-bending ring on which the contestants compete, a large pool of water far below the ring, and great numbers of spectators.[12] The arena is one of the jewels in Republic City, and people from all over the world come to visit and watch the world's greatest benders compete.[13]

After the Pro-bending Tournament was completed, the Equalists attacked this arena, leaving the roof and the pro-bending ring heavily damaged.[14]

Central City Station is the city's main hub of transportation, though in recent years, it has been less utilized due to the advent of the Satomobile. However, it remains a busy commercial area.[10] At the entrance of Central City Station is a statue in the honor of Fire Lord Zuko.[8]

Republic City power plant Edit

The Republic City power plant is the main source of electricity of the city. It is fueled by firebenders using lightning generation. According to Mako the pay for the work is pretty good.[15]

Dragon Flats district Edit

The Dragon Flats district is one of Republic City's sectors. It is known for being Hiroshi Sato's birthplace and also hosting an Equalist training facility.

Demographics Edit

Civil unrest appears imminent.

The population of Republic City is large by world standards, and the mass influx of immigrants from the four nations has caused considerable demographic challenges. The foremost of these challenges is inequality: the gap in wealth is considerable. Newcomers to the city appear unaware of these phenomena until their arrival, when they are presented with a considerable surprise. The Avatar herself believed its citizens to all be "living it up" and was shocked to discover vagabonds in the city park. With these difficult conditions, the populace seems ready to be stirred into a revolt against the perceived bending elite. A protestor expends relatively little effort in arousing anger in a crowd against an annoyed Korra.

As the center of commerce throughout the nations, organized crime appears to be very common in Republic City. Gangs such as the Triple Threat Triad lay claim to certain districts of the city, which they term "territories". In these areas, the control of triads appears to be considerable, with shopkeepers forced to pay them in order to secure their safety. This power over local business is significant considering the regular and frequent airship patrols by the city's police forces.[9]

Notable figures Edit

Transportation Edit

Lady LostrisAdded by Lady Lostris

The use of modern transportation methods such as automobiles, motorcycles, and airships is widespread in Republic City. The city also has invested considerably in advanced transportation infrastructure, with feats of engineering such as a elevated mass transit system and several suspension bridges connecting the city center with its outlying districts.[9]

Trivia Edit

  • The concept of Republic City is inspired by several real world past and present locations. This includes Shanghai circa 1920s, Hong Kong, and Western cities such as New York and Vancouver. In particular, the giant Aang statue, the huge park, and the bridge are inspired by the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge, respectively, in New York City.[6]
  • The rapid urbanization and technological advances of the World of Avatar mirrors that of the twentieth century in the real world, in which automobiles, towering buildings, trolleys, and other great engineering feats have come to be.
  • The park in Republic City also resembles the Hyde Park in London, with its "Speaker's Corner", where anyone can stand up and speak to the public. In the Republic City Park, a man is speaking to the public with a megaphone about the Equalists' views against benders.
  • The city is divided into districts. The only one known is the Dragon Flats district, home of Hiroshi Sato's family.[8][11]
  • Republic City is located near Makapu Village.
  • The tower that Korra and Bolin visited resembles the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.

  • can someone tell me where i can watch te series of the legend of korra?

    thanks :)

  • Are other big cities across the world have the same technology?

You know Ba sing se, Omashu, Fire nation capital or even a frozen metropolis in the northen water tribe..

  • Has anybody noticed the massive progress in technology between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra in the Avatar World? I realize its been 70 years, but some of the developments are quite a stretch. I would compare The Last Airbender as having the technology of 1600s or 1700s Qing Dynasty China, while The Legend of Korra is practically identical to the mid-20th century US.

    • I think it kind of depends on what part of the Avatar world you're looking at. Parts of the Earth Kingdom in AtLA were somewhat prrimitive, so I'd agree that that the difference between then and now could be a bit of a stretch. But the Fire Nations had tanks, cannons, and warships in AtLA, so if you compare Republic City to the Fire Nation it's not as different.

    • ATLA was meant to match 1850s Europe in tech and 1600 Qing China in aesthetics. 70 years from 1850 would be 1920 so yes, it matches.

    • How many tanks, dirigibles and submarines were in the 1600s? ¿Zero? Well... ...

    • war speeds up tech, it's not a strech at all

    • What about the giant drill. How many of those have you seen. We have to remember that while tech has progressed, this is first and formost a fantasy show so the tech can advance how they please.

    • the massive progress is thanks to Sokka :) his great mind created this all! :D

  • after the new episode today

  • When will the Pro-Bending Arena unlock? =(

  • wots da worst thing about LOK?? mines dat nearly all of da ATLA characters r dead

    • Well, yeah. It's been 70 years. It's realistic that many of them died. And Aang had to die no matter what for Korra to become the Avatar. At least we have Katara and Zuko, and we have Toph's daughter and Aang+Katara's children and grandchildren. Their legacy still lives on. They are not forgotten. Now we have the chance to start fresh with new characters to explore. There's more opportunity for growth with new characters, because we don't know them yet. Don't let the loss of the original cast keep you from enjoying this new series. Don't watch LOK as if it's still A:TLA because you'll have a difficult time enjoying LOK properly if you try to treat it as A:TLA. Same world, different setting, different cast, different plot.

I found one particular track a bit jarring, but it wasn't horrible and it was only used a couple of times, so I don't count it as a 'worst thing'. I was very displeased with the shipping teams publicity stunt, but that's not the show itself so it doesn't count. I wish they had taken a little more time with the ships, but since Bryke was originally limited to only 12 episodes the rushing is completely understandable, so I don't count that. I can't really think of any "worst thing" because I love just about everything in LOK...

    • Dear ForeverAFanOfZuko,

It seems that statements are strongly lack in proper grammer and spelling. Firstly, none of your sentences start with a capital letter. Secondly, your final sentence lacks punctuation, signifying that the sentence does not finish. Thirdly, you say "mines" when you mean "Mine's". Fourthly, what's is not spelled "wots", are is not spelled "r", that is not spelled "dat", and the is not spelled "da". Finally, your first statement suggests that you intended it to be a question of personal opinion on the audience, though it is written as if to suggest a question of fact, as if their is one objective thing that is the "worst" about Legend of Korra. Please edit your statements to reflect these changes.

      Sincerely,

      Summer Glau

    • They may be dead however theres been allot of flashbacks showing them :3

    • Dear Summer Glau,

That's cute. Has Joss Whedon run out of things for you to do too?

      Sincerely,

      Willow

    • Dear Mrs. Rosenburg,

I cannot say what Joss has in mind presently, but I would pay attention to Avatar news. ;)

As a side note, have you been reading XKCD recently?

      Sincerely,

      River Tam aka Summer Glau

    • Dear Ms. Glau/Tam/Ballerina From That One Episode of Angel,

Actually, I've never read it before now, but it's funny so thank you for introducing me to it. However, its relevance escapes me.

      Sincerely,

      Willow

    • Dear Willow Rosenberg/ Lily Aldrin/ that girl from the American Pie films,

XKCD creator Randall Munroe is a large Joss Whedon fan, regularly referencing both Buffy and Firefly. Recently he had a strip based off of Avatar The Last Airbender where Aang fights againist Mendeleev, creator of the perodic table of elements. He also made a joke about making large, highly educated arguements in forums that have detailed references and signing them with my name. I was alluding to how I was doing something similar, make a highly detailed argument and signing it with my own name.

      Sincerely,

      Cameron Phillips aka Summer Glau

  • im so shour there

  • Is Republic City the only technological advanced city in the world of LOK?! Oh man i would like to see the development of other cities! (Omashu,Ba Sing Se ,etc!)

    • The Fire Nation capitol had skyscrapers and in original series so I would assume it is also pretty advanced. The north pole doesn't have any foundaiton for buildings or indutry really. Hard to guess about the other EK cities. None of these cities will probably show up in LOK.

  • Well they can't travel because the creators said it would just be a repeat of Aangs adventures

    • Well yes, but they could travel to the outskirts of the land at least. I think that would make the story a little more adventurous than it already is.

    • They will go out of the city in search for the real headquarter of Equalist. Because rumor said that the headquarter was hidden somewhere behind the mountain. Lol.

  • I think the worst thing in Legend of Korra is the fact that the show will take place only in Republic City; there will be no traveling, or that's what the Avatar Wiki says. So far, there have olny been five episodes released, and they have yet to pull together a good story. Don't get me wrong, the show still has that good sense of humor it had in Avatar: the Last Airbender, but I have yet to see much of a story being unfolded. All I am saying is that as of right now, the show seems kind of dull and slow. Hopefully the show will kick off sometime in the near future (in the next couple of episodes).

    Responses PLEASE!!!

    • I don't know how not traveling translates to dull and slow story. Do you question Batman for largely taking place in Gotham or something?

    • what do you mean not being unfolded? the pacing has been way faster than the previous series. We've had outstanding character development over the past 5 episodes and while Amon's plans haven't been fully revealed yet, we're only like halfway through the first season. Heck, we've already had the love confession happen and that usually doesn't occur at least until the final battle. And they've already stated that they've neglected to go globetrotting this season because it would just be a repeat of the first series. Republic city is the newest location and it needs the most focus. It would be cool to see the other nations and how they've been affected by the advancment of technology but like I said, republic city is the new focus.

    • Quite honestly, I support the fact that Korra takes place only in Republic City. It allows for a tighter plot and a sense of home. Also, in The Last Airbender, there were still huge portions of the show where the 'Aang Gang' would hang around one place for a long period of time, most notably Ba Sing Se

  • What do you think is the worst thing in The Legend Of Korra?

  • I just saw the Down town area of Republic city on the interactive tour (or game)* and it had the flags or banners of the other nations and I'm wondering if there is areas within the city that resemble Chinatown or Spanish Harlem, what I mean is does the city have a ‘Water Tribe Harlem’ or ‘Earthtown’ but I guess we will all find out together from the show or by ourselves from the internet.

    • * Edit: the "Welcome to Republic City" interactive tour (as I call it) or game (as most people call it)
    • We know that there're the Dragon flats, a fire nation district.

    • Where did you found that game man !?

    • Its probable there is neigbourhoods in which the people resding there are alomst all form one nationality-like in NY,the city whose neighbourhoods you gave as an example.

    • Well @Anon it maybe true that the Dragon Flats distric is of ‘Fire natinals’ since Hiroshi Sato is from there, yet they haven't mentioned any other such districs just yet I guess they will mention some as soon as the Pro-bending chapionship is done.

  • does anybody notice the white photographers/reporters in the city, or is that just me? if there are white people, how would that happen?

  • hey guy when is there gonna be some new places in the show, for insteads they were chinese based how about russian like people, if they if ever had different hair colors

  • how did the world advance soo fast between the 2 shows? It went from "ancient China" to 1920s fast. I was very surprised to see cars, huge bridges, and flying blimps everywhere

    • The last show wasn't really all that ancient

    • Yeah, the original show was always the 19th century. They even had jet skis for crying out loud. With all of the technology in A:TLA, how could you mistake it for "ancient"?

    • Let me get this straight, you guys have invented tanks, jet skis and giant FRIGGIN DRILLS, but the concept of a hot air balloon...ELUUUUDES YOU.

"Well, surely steampunk has some scientific-"

      "STEAM. POWERED. JET SKIS."

"My god... what have I done?!"

    • Katara: Maybe, but look at this place it's huge, we'll find a waterbending master here for sure.

Aang: Definately, I guess that means you'll just have to put up with the stupid and find something else to do here Sokka.

Sokka: *sees Yue* Oh don't worry, I know exactly who I'm gonna do.

    • Link, please?!

      June: Hmmm...deal.

Zuko: Uncle, that wasn't part of the....

Iroh: Can it Zuko, Uncle's trying to score!

    • Stupid Bato and his stupid whale testicles.

    • I missed a few but what I remember of it seemed a lot less advanced then A:LoK. Must be forgetting some things

    • "Oh, so instead of being completely talentless, you're just completely ball-less. Nice save there, chief. Yeah, you run with your tail between your legs. It should be a lot easier to put it there without any balls!"

    • ^ X'D

This whole conversation has me going through watching all the damn episodes all over again. ITS JUST SO DAMN FUNNY!!!!

    • WHY HAS THIS COMMENT EXPLODED INTO A SERIES OF A:TAS QUOTES?

Back to the original comment, I disagree that the world wasn't "ancient" in Avatar; the Earth Kingdom and Air Temples were plenty "ancient" and fantasylike. It was just the Fire Nation that was steampunk.

    • ZonkeyMachine, you are a traitor to science.

    • It's entirely possible that the Fire Nation began sharing their technology with the other nations once there was peace.

    • @Sifuhotman: check out this one: [1] It's like A:TAS but the difference is its Korra

  • I think the Creators need to come out with a Demographics, History, and Geography wiki, even if its linked from Nick, because I'm trying to start an Avatar campain, either in the Airbender Saga or the Korra Saga, either one is ideal for my purposes I have the story I want to use, but just not the finer details of the world.

If something like that exists could someone post links? or is this the only Wiki? I'll be checking every few hours anyway so just cause I'm an Annon don't worry about ignoring this :)

    • there's a map and some locations (of cities, etc.) are known. About republik city, not many locations are known yet.

almost everything we know from the series is allready on this wiki.

  • when will they ever invent more music like Rock n Roll, Hip-Hop, Heavy Metal, or R&B

  • I wonder if there's still people who are racist towards firebenders and people from the fire nation. would that even count as racsim?

    • No, it wouldn't be racism, but just think. What did Europeans (white people) do to a lot of other races? Look at them now.

    • It'd be bigotry, which is somewhat similar, or even synonymous.

    • There's some 'city racism'.But more like 'ignorance'.Like how the TTT guy said Korra was 'fresh off the boat' and Bolin was ashamed at assuming Korras ethnicity based on her foreign clothing
