Purple Pentapus

From Avatar Wiki, the Avatar: The Last Airbender database

Purple Pentapi on Sokka

Purple Pentapi are five-eyed, five-tentacled, little octopus-like creatures that live in the sewers of Omashu. It is roughly the size of a human fist and though it latches onto targets, they are apparently harmless. Their tentacles have small suction cups that they use to grip on to the side of the sewer in order to eat algae and other sewer food. The purple pentapus is tough to remove with brute force, but if one strokes its head it will readily release its grip. If you are unlucky enough to get one stuck on you, you will be covered in small, red, suction cup marks for hours.

Purple Pentapi appear in "Return to Omashu". Purple Pentapi were used by Sokka as a way to get Omashu's refugees out of the city. With a little bit of acting, they pulled it off as the sickness "pentapox" and they were all released.

[edit] Connection

The purple pentapus resembles an octopus, but on a much smaller scale. Unlike the octopus, the small invertebrate in Avatar only has five arms, much like a starfish. Penta is the Greek numerical prefix for 'five.'
