"All I want is one child like me — a nice non-bender, who doesn't blast wind in my face every five seconds."
— Pema to Katara in "Welcome to Republic City".
Pema is the wife of Tenzin and the mother of their three airbender children - Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. Pregnant with a fourth child, Pema is a non-bendingAir Acolyte who lives a serene life with her family on Air Temple Island. She is kind and compassionate with a delightful sense of humor. She loves spending time with spiritual endeavors and at times feels overwhelmed by her children's airbending abilities.[1]
Pema fell in love with Tenzin while he was in a relationship with Lin Beifong, which was starting to falter due to their different goals in life.[2] Unable to see her true love spend his life with another woman, Pema confessed her love to the airbender, who broke off his relationship with Lin. Pema and Tenzin ended up married and started their family.[3]
When Pema traveled to the South Pole with her family to see Katara and AvatarKorra, she expressed to her mother-in-law her frustration about having only airbender children, as well as her desire for her fourth child to be a non-bender.[4]
Later, Korra journeyed to Pema's family's home and stayed with them for a while in order to complete her airbending training. The impetuous teenager turned Pema's quiet life upside down.[5]
When Korra did not come to dinner one night, a frustrated Tenzin confessed to Pema that he didn't know how to get through to Korra. Pema comforted her husband by telling him that the best thing he could do for Korra at the time was to give her some space.[6]
When CouncilmanTarrlok visited Pema and her family at dinner, she gave her husband a look of irritation, but after the waterbender said that airbenders never send away a hungry guest, Tenzin reluctantly had to let him stay, much to Pema's discontent. She later attended a gala Tarrlok threw in honor of Korra along with her family.[7]
While Korra was talking with Jinora and Ikki about how to approach Mako, Pema appeared from behind. Korra asked her how long she had been there, to which Pema replied that it had been enough time to understand the situation. She then told Korra the story behind her and Tenzin, and advised to the Avatar to do what she did.[3]
Pema is usually a calm, understanding, and happy person who assists her husband in his times of confusion or indecision.[6] However she has expressed her slight annoyance with having only children who are airbenders instead of "nice non-bender[s]" like her.[4] Pema also admitted that she was once a very shy individual, which seems to have changed a little since her younger years.
Pema is a Tibetan name meaning "lotus" that is usually used for females.
Her name may have been inspired by the Tibetan Buddhist nun, author, and teacher Pema Chödrön, similar to how the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was the inspiration for the names of her husband and Monk Gyatso.
Lin Beifong tried to put her in jail after Lin's breakup with Tenzin and the start of his and Pema's relationship.[2]

i know this might sound weird but i hope we get to see this sweet kind and pregnant lady fight... even if amateurely.. :DD i want her to display maternal aggression and protectiveness.. like if an equalist tries to harm her children she'll go, "oh no you didnt!" and beats the equalist with a frying pan :D
That would be a sight to see, the lieutenant the baddest equalist aside from Amon himself, having pinned down jinora. He's about to electorate her out cold when...
The Fortuneteller did in fact say third great-grandchild. However, we must remember that it is not confirmed that Aunt Wu can actually predict the future.
I laughed so hard when they said he dated Lin. Firstly because so many people on the wikia were guessing that, and they ended up being right. Second because they seem like such opposites i don't even want to imagine how it went on dates or something. Pema was right, she was the "wrong women"
I honestly do not like Pema that much. When Katara mentions that she thinks her next child will be an airbender as well, Pema states that she wants a "normal" child. Additionally, when Pema is talking to Korra, Jinora, and Ikki about her love for Tenzin, she refers to Lin Beifong, (at the time, we did not know it was Lin), as the "wrong woman" for Tenzin. Yes she's sweet, but I just don't like her character. And before anyone accuses me, no, I do not think Pema has any affiliation with Amon. -.-
i feel that pema and tenzin have more in common then lin and tenzin. think about it lin is aggressive independent and a little violent. tenzin on the other hand is peaceful and calm wise dude. pema sort of fits with tenzin as both have the same views of living a peaceful life and both want to have a family. i personal doubt that lin wanted a family, seeing how her job is pretty much 24/7
It makes sense that Tenzin left Lin for Pema. When he was talking about "different goals" he probably meant creating as many airbenders as possible. Pema is younger and will be able to have tons of airbending children to continue the line of airbenders. Lin, however, is older and on the polie force so she probably didn't want to be Tenzin's baby factory.
Neither Aang or Tenzin seem very concerned about this, seeing as Katara only had three children (she could've had more) and Tenzin didn't marry until he was forty . Unless he dated Lin for, like, fifteen-twenty years, or was trying to pester her about it, I don't think that played a big part. Did he date several other women beforehand, perhaps?
