On Ji is a cute schoolgirl at the Fire Nation School, and thus is one of the lucky Fire Nation children. Like all the other kids in this school she grew up in a nice Fire Nation island, away from war and poverty. Her parents think On Ji's education is very important. They hope that if she does well enough she might get the chance to attend a good university possibly on the capital island, where she could meet a nice Fire Nation Royal and make the perfect Fire Nation wife.

Aang (calling himself Kuzon) comes to the Fire Nation school saying that he is a new student from "the Colonies." After the dismissal Aang meets On Ji, who notices Momo and warns him to keep him hidden. Her "boyfriend", Hide, seeing "Kuzon" and On Ji together makes sure Aang knows that she is his "girlfriend" by starting a brief confrontation, during which On Ji rolls her eyes and does not appear very affectionate towards Hide. In Band class, Aang tries to play the Tsungi Horn and gets chided by the teacher for dancing. Nevertheless On Ji is amused by the dance, and when Aang offers to show her it during recess, it infuriates Hide, who attempts to hit Aang. Aang easily evades Hide's attacks rather than striking back, an attitude leading from his Air Nomad origins. Hide eventually overbalances and falls to the ground. Aang then gets into trouble for "beating up" another student.
On Ji is later invited to Aang's dance party. To get people to start dancing, Aang picks On Ji out of the bunch. She blushes and shyly takes his hand and starts dancing with him, causing Sokka to comment that they looked good together. When the Headmaster comes she puts on a headband to help Aang and his crew to escape. What happened to On Ji and Hide's relationship is yet to be seen.

On Ji's hair style is the same as Chihiro's/Sen's from Miyazaki's Spirited Away. The creators of Avatar have said before that they are fans of his work.
