Flying away on Appa to practice bending, Aang, Katara, Zuko, Toph, and Haru, leave Sokka, Teo, and The Duke behind to tend to chores at the Western Air Temple. Hearing Teo suggest that he and The Duke explore the temple again, a dejected Sokka declares that the group left behind will show the benders what they are missing, and he proceeds to formulate a plan.
Upon returning that night, the benders are surprised to see that a colorful tent has been erected on the temple floor. Sokka, wearing a bright green hat and purple robe, admits Momo into the tent, claiming to have kept the lemur's hat warm in his absence. Excited, Aang rushes to the structure, but is denied entrance by Sokka, who claims the area to be a "bend-free establishment". Katara leads a disappointed Aang to the campfire, accusing Sokka of being childish.
Throughout the night, the members of the so-called "Bendless Boomerang Club" make a loud show of their festivities, including snacks, beverages, boomerang lessons, and flying toys made by Teo. While the others seem to take little or no notice of the club, Aang marvels enviously at their activities, insisting to the others that they have to find a way to get in on the action. Katara comforts him, convincing him to forget the club and get some sleep.
The next morning, however, Aang is on his knees, begging Sokka to let him into his club, to which Sokka replies cryptically that he will concede to make another exception. Puzzled, Aang enters the clubhouse only to see that the other benders are already inside wearing membership hats. Zuko, Toph, and Katara feebly make excuses for their joining, while Haru looks sheepishly down at a toy airplane. Aang thanks Sokka for admitting him into the club, but Sokka claims he is not yet a member until he recites the Boomeranger Oath, which is as follows:
"I pledge allegiance to my bendless brethren, and admit that no bending can equal the might of the noble boomerang. One team, under hats, indivisible, with snacks and field trips for all".
Aang, Zuko, Toph, Haru, and Katara all get down on one knee and recite this pledge, while Sokka, Momo, The Duke, and Teo watch from the corner.
The oath is a parody of the United States' pledge of allegiance.
In this comic, Toph is shown to be quite comfortable with getting foot massages, whereas in "Tales of Ba Sing Se", she warns the attendants at the Fancy Lady Day Spa not to touch her feet.
When saying the oath, the benders have to raise a hand and curve the index finger like a boomerang like Sokka did in "Bending Battle".
