Niyok was the sister of Nutha and a friend of Katara's from the Southern Water Tribe. In order to find a job and make a living, she and her sister left the tribe for the Earth Kingdom, where they were hired to work at the Earthen Fire Refinery.[1]

History[]

Niyok was born and raised in the Southern Water Tribe. Sometime before 102 AG, she moved to work at the Earthen Fire Refinery in the Earth Kingdom.

One day, Niyok spotted Katara walking with Avatar Aang, Sokka, and three Air Acolytes, Xing Ying, Yee-Li, and Jingbo. She caught Katara's attention and happily embraced the waterbender, whom she had not seen since Katara's departure from the tribe with Aang years prior. Upon inquiry, she explained that she had traveled to the Earth Kingdom in order to work at the refinery. Their reunion was cut short, however, when Nutha gave Katara a noncommittal stare and called Niyok back over to where she and another friend were sitting.[1]

Niyok explains herself

Niyok explained to Katara why she and her sister could not leave the mine.

Niyok later resumed her work in Loban's iron mine, until she and the other workers were told by Sokka and Katara to leave the mine as it was unstable and about to collapse. When Nutha refused to go, she backed her sister up, explaining that they could not leave until their boss said so lest they would be fired and that was something they could not afford. However, when the mine collapsed, she barely made it out with Sokka's assistance, though was in need of medical attention as her arm was broken. Niyok was left in the care of the Air Acolytes.[2]

Niyok was eventually reunited with Nutha following the intervention of Avatar Aang and Toph's metalbending students, who removed the iron ore deposits and earth above those trapped, and took her sister to also receive medical attention. After the mining village was saved from an attack by the warrior spirit General Old Iron, Niyok's arm eventually recovered and she and Nutha rekindled their old bond with Katara. The three ate together and reminisced on their time in the South Pole region, such as trying to eat Auntie Ashuna's seal jerky; Niyok laughed at Katara recalling the time she broke her teeth doing so. When the waterbender had to leave because Aang appeared upset, Niyok looked in his direction in concern before smiling warmly as Nutha remarked that Katara and Sokka made Southern Tribal citizens proud.[3]
